親愛なるPingMag読者の皆様、メリー・クリスマス！今年もクリスマスがやって来ました！大切なあの人へのプレゼントの準備はお済みですか？東京のPingMagオフィスからは、クリスマス・プレゼントの代わりに、イタリアはローマ出身、現在は東京在住のアーティスト、ベネデッタ・ボッロメティさんのフェルトやグリッターを使ったキュートな作品をご紹介しながら、世界中の皆さんと一緒にクリスマスをお祝いしたいと思います！

ベネデッタさんは、学生時代はアーティストになると思っていなかったそうですね。

昔から絵を描いていて、画家になりたいとは思っていましたが、元々は弁護士になる勉強をしていたんです。ところが、ある時、母が経営するインテリア・ショップの殺風景な壁に私の絵を1枚飾ったところ、その絵を欲しがる人達が次々と現れて、夢が叶うんじゃないかと思うようになりました。それから、大学を卒業した後に、ロンドンのセントラル・セント・マーティンでファイン・アートを学びました。

3年程前に東京に引っ越してきたそうですが、東京の生活は作品に良い影響を与えますか？

これまで世界中を旅してきましたが、日本は作品作りにおいて私に沢山のインスピレーションを与えてくれる最高の場所です。とは言え、日本文化を作品に反映させている訳ではないんですよ。私の作品は、全て私自身についてなんです。ここに出て来る女の子も全て私です。自分の作品だから実物の私よりスリムにしていますけど（笑）。作品は、過去に私の人生で起こった出来事やその時の感情を表現しています。

ベネデッタさんの作品は、よく見ると立体になっているんですよね。

色々な手法を試すことや、様々な素材で遊ぶのが好きなんです。そうすることで、作品が生きてきますから。私の作品はキャンバスという平面を飛び出すことで魅力的になりますし、立体の方が私の想像力を優れた形で表現できるんです。

立体にする材料はどこで手に入れるのですか？

私はインスピレーションを旅行からも得ているのですが、立体の材料は旅先のアンティーク・マーケットやアート・ショップで見つけています。モザイク用のタイルや、ポンポン、卵の殻を潰したもの、着物の帯、アンティークのレースもありますよ。

グリッターやフェルトなど、とにかく材料が沢山！

これは部屋の壁に付けるオーナメントです。作ってるのは、ローマにある古いお店のおじいさんで、そのおじいさんに「これを私の絵に使ってるの」と言うと、「これは絵のためのものじゃないんだぞ。何してもいいが、これは壁用だ。」っていつも怒られるんです。ひどいでしょ？（笑）

ベネデッタさんは、ファッション・デザイナーのツモリチサトさんとのコラボレーションもされていますよね。

私の人生で起こった他の重要な出来事と同じように、ツモリさんとのお仕事も全くの偶然だったんです。ある時、パリにあるツモリさんのお店でご本人に遭遇してお話をしていたら、ツモリさんがファッション・ウィーク中のコレクションに私を招待してくれたんですよ。その時にツモリさんが私の作品を見て、その後、東京で再会し、一緒に絵を描き、お友達として会うようになりました。

作品のタイトルは、アメリカの先住民族「Sioux（スー）」。

すごいきっかけですね！でも、ツモリさんの作品とベネデッタさんの作品には似た空気感があるので、きっと運命だったのだと思いますよ！ところで、ベネデッタさんの格言のひとつは「夢は叶う」だそうですが、PingMagの読者の中には、これから日本で活動したいと思っている海外のアーティストの方が大勢いるんですけれど、皆さんに何かアドバイスを頂けますか？

私がアドバイスできるのは、「航空券を買って、飛行機に乗っちゃいなさい！」ってことでしょうか。最初は短期の滞在から始めてみるのがいいかもしれません。最初は大変ですが、来てみればどうにかなるものですし、言葉や文化を学ぶことで、日本はもっと楽しい国になります。私は30歳から日本語の勉強を始めたんですけど、周囲の人達には「そんな年から日本語を学ぶなんて、クレイジーだよ！」って言われていたんです。ところが今は、私以外全員日本人のグループで居酒屋に行くこともあるんですよ！

では、今は東京の生活もラクラクですね。

最初に覚えた漢字の半分は忘れてしまいましたけど（笑）、今は本当にハッピーですし、東京はヨーロッパの良い所を全部持ってきたような街なので、とても住みやすい場所だと思います。ひとつだけ問題があるとしたら、イタリアから遥か彼方にあることでしょうか。うちのママがよく言うんです。「よりによって、なぜそんなに遠くに行っちゃったの？帰ってきて！」って（笑）。私もヨーロッパはとても恋しいんですよ。実際、今、イタリアでも沢山のプロジェクトを抱えているんです。先日は、ローマの「アート・ア・ポーター」という展示でイタリアのファッション・デザイナーともコラボレーションしたり、現在もローマで展示を開催中です。今後はもちろん日本でも色々なお仕事に関わっていきたいですね。

では、最後にご自分の作品に対する思いを教えてください。

私は作品に幸福感を与えたいんです。私の様々な感情を読み取ることのできる人々の元に、私の作品、つまり”私の一部”が届くといいなと思っています。
