瀬戸正人：ビンラン売りの甘い誘惑

前を行き交う車を誘惑するように、暗闇で妖しく光るビンラン屋のネオン。一見いかがわしい場所なのかと思いきや、実はそうではないらしい…。瀬戸正人写真集「binran」より。

国道沿いに立つ、派手なネオンの付いたガラス張りの小屋。その中では、露出度の高い服を着た若い女性がガラスのテーブルの上で何かを作っている…。写真家の瀬戸正人は、台湾での取材中に不思議な光景に出くわした。それが、本日ご紹介する瀬戸さんの写真集「binran」の始まりだ。今日は、瀬戸さんご本人にお話を伺いながら、日本ではあまり知られていない、この不思議なビンランの世界へと皆さんを誘いたいと思う。

まず、この企画はどのように始まったのでしょうか？

ある時、旅行雑誌の取材で一週間程、台湾に行ったんですよ。その時に、車で山に行った帰り道、暗闇の中で、昼間には見かけなかった小屋がいくつも立っていることに気づいたんです。気になって近づいてみると、女の子達がこんな格好で、何かを作って売っている。一体何を売っているんだろう、と興味を持ったものの、一旦帰国して色々調べてみたんです。すると、台湾では「ビンラン」というものを売る風習があることが分かったんです。

ビンランとは一体何ですか？

日本ではビンロウと呼ばれるものなんですが、ウズラの卵ぐらいの大きさのヤシの実の一種で、中の実を半分に裂いたものに石灰を塗って、胡椒か何かの葉で挟んで、それをガリガリ噛むんです。すると、そのうちガムみたいに柔らかくなって、真っ赤な汁が出るんですね。その汁を吸ったり吐いたりすることで、覚醒作用が得られるんです。値段は季節にもよりますが、タバコの箱みたいなものに10個ほど入っていて、200円ぐらい。現地ではタバコよりも高く、常用するのは男性とお年寄りが多いようです。東南アジアではごく普通に売られているんですよ。

とても不思議ですね…。それで、このビンラン売りの写真を撮ろうと思われたんですね。

最初は、裏の社会があって、写真なんか撮れないんじゃないかと思っていたんですよ。でも、色々調べてみても特に何もないようだったので、撮りに行くことにしたんです。もちろん、売り子の女の子達は台湾語しか話せないですから、台湾語を話せる人に通訳になってもらって、まずはこのエリア、次はここ、という感じでどんどん撮っていきました。

台湾中に点在しているんですか？

そうですね。ただ台北市内では普通におばあさんが売っていて、こういうお店は市外ですね。国道沿いにあるのですが、正確な場所が分からないので、タクシー・ドライバーに聞いたりもしました。

全然想像がつかないんですが、お店に近づくとどうなるんですか？

車で近づくと、売り子の女の子が店から出てくるんです。「何かいりますか？」と聞かれて、「水をください」とか「ビンランください」と言ってお金を渡すと、「わかりました」と言って、持ってくる。キヨスクみたいなもんです。ところが、人気がある売り子のところは、近くに別のお店があっても、みんな待っているんですよ。

それにしても、なぜビンランを売るためのお店がガラス張りで、売り子さんがこんな露出の高い姿なんでしょう？

単純にお客を惹き付けるための一種のビジネスの方法なんだと思います。元々は街のタバコ屋さんみたいなお店だったのに、20年ぐらい前からこのように変わってきたらしいんです。でも、日本人の感覚から言うと、歌舞伎町でもないのに、こんな格好をしている人が近所にいるのは抵抗があるでしょう？ところが、現地ではそうでもないようなんです。

ということは、日本で言うところのバドガールみたいな存在でしょうか…？

まさに、そういう感じですよ！別に差別されている訳でもなく、隣近所の人もよく知っているようなんです。

ここに映っている売り子の女性達は、皆さんどことなく影があるように感じられますが、実際彼女達とお話しされました？

話しましたよ。彼女達は社員で、朝、昼、夜と三交代で、お店は24時間営業なんです。夜行くと必ずこういう人がいて、お給料も結構良いみたいなんですよ。僕も彼女達に影があると感じたんですが、実際には能天気な人も多かったですね。

写真集の中には、お店というより自分の部屋のように私物を持ち込んで、マニキュアを塗っていそうな人もいましたね。あれは時間を潰すためでしょうか？

そうでしょうね。あと、店の中にいる間は、ビンランのヘタを取ったり、中身を塗ったりして、仕込みもしているんですよ。だからどこのお店にもこのテーブルがあるんです。

写真の写し方に関して、何かご自分なりのルールはありましたか？

僕はスナップとしてではなく、三脚を立ててきちんと撮るんです。それで「撮りますよー！」と言って、彼女達にある種の緊張感を与えた中で撮るようにしました。なので、雰囲気ではなく、細かい所もリアルに写っていると思います。

今回、初めてこの不思議なビンランの世界を知る人も多いかと思いますが、何か瀬戸さんより皆さんにメッセージをお願いします。

    ディティールをキチンと撮ることでマネキンが際立ちますね。
    今度は引いて暗闇の混沌とした町並みに
    ショーウインドウが浮かび上がるところを見てみたい。
    日本にも荒涼とした田舎にポツンとフィリピンパプがある光景にも似てますね。
