紙の仮設小学校で、四川省の子供達に笑顔を！

新学期が始まり、完成した仮設の小学校で授業を受ける四川省成都市の生徒たち。

世界中の目まぐるしいニュースの中で、今年5月の中国四川省大地震は今でも記憶に新しいのではないだろうか。マグニチュード8を記録し、死傷者は40万人を超え、半年経った現在ももちろん、その復興作業は続いている。そんな中、慶応義塾大学の坂茂研究室、松原弘典研究室では、学生を中心に、四川省の省都である成都市に紙管を用いた仮設小学校を建設した。今日のPingMagでは、学生のプロジェクトリーダー、土井亘さんにお話を伺いながら、建築と災害復興について考えてみたい。

まずは、どのような経緯で仮設の小学校を作るプロジェクトが立ち上がったのかをお聞かせ下さい。

僕が所属する坂茂研究室では、もともと災害復興のプロジェクトを行っていたので、中国で地震が起きた直後に、何か動かなければ、という話になりました。そして、中国に事務所を持つ松原さんに坂さんがすぐ連絡を取り、二人で現地へ視察に行って、成都市にある西南交通大学の協力を得ることができました。その後、西南交通大学のキャンパス内に仮設の住宅をデモンストレーションという形で建てたところ、それを見た方から成都市内の華林小学校の建設依頼がありました。

小学校がある成都市はどのような地域なのですか？

最も被害が大きかった地域からは車で二時間ぐらい離れた地域で、そこに比べればそれほど被害が大きいわけではないのですが、そういう所こそ、復興支援が行き届かないのです。被災はそれほど大きくはないけれど、困っている人達を助けていこうということになって、9月の新学期に間に合うように小学校を建てることになりました。

具体的に、どのような小学校を建てたのでしょうか？

大きさは奥行き6m×幅30mを1棟にして、それを3棟。1棟が3等分されているので、全部で9教室分です。設計は、坂さんが出したアイディアを博士課程の原野さんが図面に起こしました。基本的には、紙管をフレームとして、壁には中国製の値段も安くて加工しやすい素材を使い、屋根に合板、断熱材、ポリカを乗せました。

坂さんは紙素材の建築物を設計されることが多いようですが、その利点とは何ですか？

値段が安く、世界中どこでも手に入ることが大きいのだと思います。構造的にもしっかりしているので安心だということではないでしょうか。坂先生はこれまでに、インドやトルコ、日本では神戸などでも紙管による災害復興を行っています。

では、どのようなプロセスで建設作業は進んだのでしょうか？

8月2日から約40日間、日本と西南交通大学の学生、それから小学校の先生のボランティアが来て、作業を行いました。初めに現地に到着した時は、材料も道具も何も用意されていない状態だったので、それを集める作業から始まりました。それが意外に大変で、例えば日本で12ミリの合板を100枚頼めば確実にそれが届く。でも中国で同じことを頼んでも10〜14ミリの合板を100枚そろえてくるので、一枚一枚確認しなければならないという、日本では考えられない困難もありました。

何人ものボランティアによって作業が進む。

作業を通してどんなことを考えましたか？

日本でも中国でも、建築を学ぶ学生には「設計課題」と呼ばれる勉強があります。実際に一つの建築物が出来上がっていく中で、その課題に取り組んでいた時には考えも付かないようなこと、例えばこの形だとビスが打てないとか、どうやって組み立てるかだとか、リアルな部分に直面してそれがとても良い勉強になりました。

学生のうちにそのような経験ができるのは本当に貴重なことですね。小学校が出来上がった後の現地の人や子供達は、どのような反応をしていましたか？

生徒たちは本当に嬉しそうで、満面の笑みでした。純粋に嬉しいし、充実感でいっぱいになると同時に自分達の成長にも繋がったと思います。最後に皆で集まった時は、一緒に作業した仲間も「ありがとう、謝謝」と言いながら涙、涙でした。

このプロジェクトを通して、どのようなことを学んだと思われますか？

建築とは、一般的に都内にビルや個人住宅を建てることだという印象がありがちですが、時としてその行為が周辺の町並みを壊したり、建築家のエゴにもなり得るという状況もあります。建築家は、社会に対して何をすべきかを考える必要があります。その答えとして、困っている人を助けるということも含めて、人を満足させることに注視する義務があると思うのです。今回のプロジェクトはそれを具現化した一つとなったと思っています。学生のうちにこのようなプロジェクトに参加できたことは、40歳、50歳になっても良い験だったと振り返れると思います。

その経験を生かして、将来、立派な建築家になってくださいね！期待しています！
