グラフィティ・ジャパン

都内最大の合法な壁、タワーレコード吉祥寺店の外壁の計画と作業には、なんと5年もの歳月が費やされた。作業中のSCAクルーのライターたち（KRESS、PHIL、FATE、BUTOBASK、SUIKO、EMAR、TENGAほか）。書籍グラフィティ・ジャパンに収録されなかった写真の一枚。 © Remo Camerota

かなり前に、日本と東京のグラフィティ事情でもっとも知名度の高いライターたちをご紹介したが、ついに日本の名人の技を世界に発信する本が出版された。オーストラリア人レモ・カメロタは、過去二年にわたってストリートアートの最高峰の作品をマーク・バティー出版社から発売される書籍「グラフィティ・ジャパン」に収録すべく集め続けてきた。本日のPingMagは、敬愛する下北沢の喫茶店でそんなレモさんの冒険とも言えるお話をおうかがいした。

本に使用された素材はいつから集め始めたのですか？

2006年の10月に、この本の作業を始めるために初めて来日しました。

本の前書きにはどなたかの招待で来日されたと書かれていましたが、もう一度そのお話を聞かせてください。

私はメルボーン出身のグラフィティ・アーティストであると同時に、もう何年もグラフィティの写真を撮影していて、LAのグラフィティの本も出しているんです。それでオーストラリアの出版社にメルボーンのグラフィティの本についてアプローチしたのですが、ちょうど一冊出してしまったところだったので、その代わりに当時向こうになかった日本のグラフィティの本を出そうと思ったんです。（現在では昨年出版されたRackGakiがある）日本の本も少しはありましたが、あまり幅広く売られているとは言えませんでした。

確かに日本と聞いて最初に思い浮かぶのは、グラフィティではないでしょうね…。

一人のアーティストとして、こちらにこんなにもたくさんのグラフィティがあるとは思っていませんでしたから、最終的には一年で15,000枚もの写真を撮ってしまいましたよ！出版社から貰った少しばかりの前金で日本に来ましたが、知人は一人もおらず、言葉もわからなくて…。

それでどうされたのでしょうか？

インターネットでグラフィティ・アーティストが何人もアプローチしてきてくれて、そこでSUIKOを見つけました。それで彼に簡単な英語で「本を作りに日本に行くのだけれど、手伝ってくれませんか？あなたの作品が気に入ったので、写真を撮りに行ってもいいですか？お住まいはどこですか？」と連絡したら即座に返事をくれて、「こちらは広島在住で、うちに泊まっていいよ。僕や他のみんなの作品のある場所に連れて行って案内してあげる」と言ってくれたんです。

まったく知らない方がすごいですね！それで広島に行かれたのですか？

当初の旅程にもスケジュールにもまったくなかったんですよ！ですから広島を最初の目的地にしました。彼の顔を見たこともなかったし、意思疎通も難しかったので、会うまでにかなりの時間がかかってしまいました。しかも彼は電車の最後尾にいて、私は一番前に乗っていたんですよ。お互いがコネクトするまでに2時間もかかってしまいました！結局SUIKOは広島のキングというか、あちらで最高のアーティストの一人だということが判明したのですが、そんなことは当時の私には知る由もないことでした。彼は家族と住む小さな家に私を連れていって、自分のベッドを私に明け渡して、自分はどこか別の部屋の床で寝てくれていたようです。ですから彼の家族全員にもお会いしました。彼らはささやかな借家住まいでしたから、一連の流れにかなり恐縮してしまったのですが…。それでも彼の自分のアートを心から信じて、それさえできればいい、それしか頭にないという姿勢には大変な繋がりを感じました。

それからどうなったのですか？

彼のところで一週間過ごしたのですが、その間彼は自分の予定を全部キャンセルして、私のためにスケジュールを組んで広島の色々な場所に案内してくれました。その間に私も何ヶ所かの壁にペイントして、コマ撮りの写真もいくつか撮ることができました。あと辺鄙な場所にある農家にも連れて行ってくれましたね。そこの所有者がグラフィティが好きらしくて、彼と彼の仲間にお金を払って、家の外壁の一面をペイントするように依頼したのだそうです。あの壁は本当に素晴らしかった。

SUIKOが私の取っ掛かりを作ってくれました。私を信頼して家にまで泊めてくれて、彼には本当に感謝しています。普通グラフィティをやる連中は、彼らや彼らのアートを紹介したいという外国人に非常に警戒心が強いんです。SUIKOとは一週間一緒にいただけなのですが、彼は「東京に行ったら、絶対に僕の友人のEMARに会わないと」と言ってくれました。でも彼には東京まで行く旅費がなかったので、結局私が彼の分まで旅費を出して一緒に行くことにしました。東京に着いた時は土砂降りで、SUIKOが私のコンピュータを落としてしばらく動かなくなったり、私もカメラを壊してしまったりしたのですが、すべて二日で修理できたおかげでまた問題なく動くようになりました。EMARの家に行くと二人が色々な作品を見せてきたので、私もすっかり興奮してしまいました。EMARはその他にもグラフィック・デザインの作品も見せてくれたんです。

最終的に、一ヶ月間彼のところに滞在されたと…。

ええ、浅草のホテルに帰ろうとしたら、彼が「行かなくていいよ！ここに好きなだけいればいい」と言ってくれたんです。私は「でも泊まれる部屋もないみたいだし」と言ったのですが、彼は「関係ないよ、ここの床で一緒に寝ればいい」と言ったんです。それで私も同意して、ホテルに電話しました。そんなわけで、かろうじて並んで横になれるだけの部屋に大の男が三人一緒に寝ることになったんです。

それから東京中を案内してくれたそうですね。

はい。EMARとSUIKOは、私を横浜のBELX2たちに紹介してくれました。彼ら曰く、彼女はグラフィティのゴッドマザー的な存在なんだそうです。横浜にある「ウォール・オブ・フェイム」にも、彼女が案内してくれました。

それはどこのことなのでしょうか？

桜木町駅にある場所です。駅を出てすぐに右折して、もう一度右折すれば見えてきます。2キロほど続いているのですが、本当にすごいですよ。こんな場所は世界のどこにもないと思います！（今では行政がすべてを塗りつぶす決定を下している）

本の中で、「BELX2はメンバー同士の喧嘩はビジュアルな方法で行われる」と書かれていましたが、これはどういうことなのでしょうか？

翻訳してしまうと上手く意味が伝わらないのですが、彼女の説明によると、仮にクルーの一人が他のクルーと上手く行っていないことがあって、それが東と西、もしくは北と南などの対立しているグループ同士の話だったとします。でもグループ間の争いがあると同時に、彼らの間には敬意もあって、南の人たちが東京の人々に敬意を持ち、東京のライターが神奈川のライターをリスペクトしているのを私も見てきました。

それでも競争はあって、誰かが別のクルーについてふざけたことを書くと、書かれた側はその隣に反撃のようなものを書き込みます。まるでマンガのシナリオみたいですが、これはどちらかが勝つか、誰かが警察に逮捕されるまで続くんです。基本的に、彼らはペイント戦争とも言えるような、非常に複雑なシステムの喧嘩をやっているんです。ペイントでお互いを出し抜こうとしているんですね。

それは世界中のどこの都市でも似たり寄ったりなのでは？

競争はどこにでもありますし、誰もが他の連中を出し抜こうとしているとは思います。誰かが新しいことを始めたら、その次は他の誰かがもっと新しいことをやろうとする。私自身は、彼らがお互いの顔を見ながら、直接こういう議論をしているのかどうかも知りません。ですが彼らはお互いを全面的にリスペクトしているので、誰かの作品の上にタギングすることだけはしないんです。もし誰かの作品の上にタギングする人間がいたら、それはもう決定的で、敵とみなされます。タギングした人物が判明したら、その人は結構面倒なことになるかもしれません…。

想像するのも怖いですね…。

名前は明かせませんが、あるライターが打ち明けてくれた話があります。彼は東京のパーティーに行って、持ち主が東京で一、二を競うペイント集団のリーダーだとも知らずに、ある車にタギングしてしまったんです。彼は車の他に、たくさんのものにタギングしたと言っていました。それで彼は故郷に逃げ帰って一年間東京には戻らなかったのですが、彼が遂にまた東京に足を踏み入れたときに、私がスプレー缶を入れた巨大なケースを引きずっている彼を見かけたんです。そのケースは明らかに重そうで、ホイールすらついていなくて、スプレー缶が30本は入っていそうなものでした。それで話を聞いてみると、彼は対立や報復として蹴りつけられるが怖くて一年間東京に戻らなかったと言うんです！

でも彼は結局当のクルーの許を訪れて、やったことへの謝罪をする決心をしたんです。それというのも、東京に戻りたくとも他に方法が考え付かなかったので、これに命を賭けたんです。その人物に会いに行って、1時間か2時間ほどして戻った後にすべて話してくれたことですが、彼が缶を引きずって部屋に入り、椅子に座って心底怯えていると、相手が正面に座って「このスプレーヤーネームを使っているのはお前か？」と聞いてきたそうです。それで彼がそうだと答えると、「お前の作品の大ファンなんだ！素晴らしい作品だね。一緒にコラボしないか？」と言われたのだそうです。それで相手はプレゼントを受け取ってくれて、なんと二人は今では友人になっています！

そんなこともあるのですね！そういえばレモさんとしては、西洋と日本のスタイルで一番違うのはどんな点だと思われますか？

二年前にこの本を作るに当たって初めて日本に来た時は、オーストラリアではステンシルが主流で、こういったグラフィック的なスタイルはまったくありませんでした。ですから日本もきっと同じだろうと思っていたんです。でも着いてみると、広島で初めて目にした絵はそれよりも遥かに精巧でダイナミックなものでした。神奈川のShizentomotelの作品にも見られるように、漫画の影響は確実にありますし、西洋とは異なるアルファベットと漢字のミックスが見られると思います。

漫画のエア・ギアに出てくる効果音をカタカナで表現したものを思い出しますね…。

LAでこれほどのディテールを持つ作品を見ることはまずありません。それからライティングも本当に細かいですね。オーストラリアに戻ってみると、あちらでもグラフィックが主流になっていましたが、日本で見た精巧で複雑なスタイルには遥かに及ばないものでした。でも興味深いことに、もっとも美しい壁はどこかの田舎の廃棄された農家の壁だったりするんですよね…。

…それはまず見付かりませんね！スプレーヤーの方々の多くはグラフィック・デザイナーの仕事をされているのでしょうか？他にはどんなところで彼らの作品を見ることができるのでしょうか？

私が採り上げたアーティストの中には素晴らしい才能を持つ人もいますが、基本的には全員トラックの運転手や肉体労働などの普通の仕事に就いています。彼らは20代半ばで、作品を公にして、上手く立ち回りさえすれば、素晴らしい未来に向かって歩き出せると思うのですが、この国には大変な無気力感が立ち込めていて、人も現状を受け入れてしまっているように感じられました。アーティストの大半は、作品の写真を撮って本を出版して、世界に発信したいという私の言葉が信じられないようでした。欧米では誰もが自分のやることで秀でたいと思うものなのに、彼らはお金のことすらどうでも良くて、自分たちのアートのことしか眼中にないのです。私としては、これはもっと多くの西洋人が見習うべき資質だと思いますね。私がEMARに会った時、彼は印刷会社で働いていましたが、私は彼の作品がいかに素晴らしいかを教えて、フリーのグラフィック・アーティストとして働くべきだと勧めました。それで彼が始めるのを手伝ったところ、今ではたくさんの仕事に恵まれているそうです！

「スカー」という長編映画の脚本を書いている最中に、大友克洋氏の息子の大友昇平さんとお会いして、彼やEMAR、それにキャラクターデザイナーのラファウ・ゴジエンネッキら、日本の素晴らしい才能と一緒にその映画をモノクロとカラーの漫画にする仕事を始めようと思い立ちました。こちらは幸い、来年中にレイヴン・ブックスから刊行される予定です。
