インテリアから家具、プロダクトに至るまで、幅広い作品を手がける3人のスーパー・デザイン・ユニット「トネリコ」。結成された2002年以来、彼らは止まることを知らず、美しく洗練された作品の数々を作り続けている。そんな彼らが長距離ランナーのように走り続けられるヒミツは一体何なのだろうか？PingMagは渋谷にあるトネリコのスタジオを訪ね、米谷ひろしさん、君塚賢さん、増子由美さんの3人にお話を伺った。

トネリコを結成したきっかけから教えて頂けますか？
君塚：米谷と僕はインテリアデザイナーの内田繁さんの事務所で勤務していた頃の先輩後輩という関係なんです。増子は銀座松屋のディレクターなどをされている山田節子さんの元で仕事をしていたんですが、山田さんと内田さんがよくお仕事をされていたので、僕達3人が知り合いました。トネリコという名前は、僕達が好きなホワイトアッシュという素材の「アッシュ」の和名なんです。
トネリコはインテリアを主としている事務所ですが、家具をはじめプロダクトも沢山作られていますよね。それは何故ですか？
君塚：空間を作る場合に、既製品を置くよりそこに合った椅子やテーブルを作る方がいいので、自然とそうなることが多いんです。僕達にとっては空間もプロダクトも一緒なんですよ。
「プロダクトの制作」と聞くと、最初から商品化を目指していると考えがちですが、皆さんはいかがでしょう？例えば、過去にサローネ・サテリテに三度出展されていましたが、その時はどのような感じだったのでしょうか？
米谷：基本的にはすぐに商品化とは思っていないんです。サローネの一年目は、商品化できそうな作品もありましたが、そうならなくても良いと思っていました。当時はただ漠然と違う目線で白磁を使った何かを作りたいと考えていたんです。
二年目はどのように？
米谷：一年目はベーシックなものを作ったので、二年目は型を破るようなものを作りたいと考えました。世界中のデザイン学校に椅子のデザインの型みたいなものがあると思いますけど、それを打ち砕きたいと思って作った作品なので、商品化はないだろうと思っていました。市場では通用しなくても、気に入ってくれるメーカーがいればそれで良いと思ったんです。
三年目の作品「メメント」では最優秀賞を受賞されましたね。
米谷：自分達は空間デザインを軸としているので、自分達が伝えたいメッセージを発揮するために、空間インスタレーションを発表しました。オブジェのような作品だったので、見に来た人はそれが何なのか色々と考えてくれたみたいです。
サテリテに出て得たものはありましたか？
米谷：サテリテは三回しか出せないのですが、三年やって結果的に評価を得られたことが自分たちの自信にも繋がりました。三年目くらいからカッシーナやアルフレックスにも興味を持ってもらうことができましたし、自分達の望むものを表現して理解してもらえたからこそ、次のステップに進むことが出来たのだと思います。
2007年の「インテリア ライフスタイル展」の作品についても教えて頂けますか？
増子：この時は、白磁メーカーのセラミックジャパンと一緒に「セラミックジャパン×トネリコ」というブースを出しました。そのブースでは、床、壁、テーブルの三カ所を使うことが出来たので、白磁のフロアライト、壁掛けの花器、テーブルに置けるプレートという作品の組み合わせを考えました。
君塚：「ティルト」というライトは光が透けるようになっているんですが、少し傾いてるのが分かりますか？焼き物を焼くと傾いてしまうことが多いのですが、これはその傾きを活かしています。各々が違う方向を向いていて、面白いでしょう？
増子：壁掛けの花器は、カンガルーのお腹のポケットをイメージしています。赤ちゃんをお腹の中で育てるように大事に植物を育てようというメッセージを込めています。
増子：プレートは、以前同じ「セル」という名前の作品を作った時に、細胞が生物の最小単位でとても神秘的であるということが気に入って、プレートが細胞分裂したような作品を作りたいと思ってデザインしました。
どれも素敵な作品ばかりです！自由な発想が出来るからこそ、より良いものが生まれるんでしょうね。現在進行中のプロダクトはありますか？
増子：私達が以前手がけた和菓子屋さんのインテリアを見て、禄兵衛という別の和菓子屋さんが依頼してきた最中のデザインがあります。薄い最中で、中身を自分で組み立てるようになっているんです。
空間から最中まで本当に幅が広いですね。展覧会への参加など今後のご予定もかなり詰まっているそうですが、この先の展望などがあれば教えてください。
米谷：自分達が望んで作ることを絶えずやっていきたいです。今までそれがきっかけで出会ったり、発見したり、得るものが本当に沢山あったんですよ。

増子：沢山の人に作品を見せて反応を頂くのは、本当に凄いことなんですよ！自分達の経験のためにも、いつまでも「今年は何を作ろう！？」というモチベーションを持ち続けたいです。普段の仕事と良いバランスを取りながら続けていけたらいいですね。
