地形学的な観点から見た東京

滅多に見ることのない、東京の高度差を示す地形図は、見慣れたGoogleマップとは少し違うはず。石川初さんの早稲田大学でのプレゼンテーションより。（写真：日本高密10mメッシュ標高データ+Kashmir3D）

石川初は、本業以外の時間には東京の地形学に情熱を燃やす赤坂のランドスケープアーキテクトだ。一方では、上昇する海面など変わりつつある地形の中で、ファイバーシティなどの未来のまちづくりを手がけながら、もう一方ではあらゆる手段で東京を視覚化する。地図の伝道者を自称する石川さんにとって、GPSは彼が使う無数のツールのうちの一つであるらしい。本日は、そんな石川さんが以前早稲田大学で行った講義を、特別にPingMagにも聞かせていただいた。

石川さんはマッピングにはまっていらっしゃるそうですが…。

私の一般的な関心は、地図自体と地図の作り方にあります。本業のほうでも地図を使いますし、マッピングは趣味でもあります。地図を使うということは、町の中で実際に体験したことに更なる深みを与えるということで、たとえば浅草地域の傾斜を目で見ても、それはただの傾斜地でしかありません。そしてそこを歩いてみることによって、その傾斜がもっと大きな地理的地域の一部であることを知ることができますが、それだけではその地形の全容をつかむことはできません。ですが地図を見ることで、その傾斜を地形学的なエリアの、谷や河床の形状の一部として理解できるようになります。人は地図を使って自分の位置を知り、そういった画像によって自分のいる場所についても知ることができるのです。

地図とは一種の表現、もしくは表示の方法であると。

そうですね。人はこういった図形で自分がどこにいるのかを理解しますから、一種の言語と言えるかもしれません。地図で本物の空間と実際の体験を表示することはできませんが、それでも自分がどこにいるのかを知ることはできます…。

…抽象化の度合いに応じて、ということですね。

ええ、ですから地図は、人が同時に二つのレイヤーを見るという抽象化の概念です。地図とは非常に抽象的かつ現実的なもので、人間の想像力はその間を行ったり来たりして、この図形をどうにか現実世界に結び付ける。それが地図の本質だと思います。

地図とは、人の脳が物理的な環境とその画像との間に、いかに接点を見出すかということなのですね！では次は東京の捉え方について教えてください。

川と谷

…傾斜や下部にある渋谷駅が浮き彫りになった、同じ地域の地形図。黄色い部分は土地が高くなっていることを示し、中央の黒っぽい線はそこが川であったことを示している。（写真：国土地理院数値地図5mメッシュ(標高)東京都区部、数値地図25000（地図画像）+Kashmir3D）

代々木公園の右側の傾斜は、キャットストリートが元々は川だったことを示しています。また地下鉄銀座線は非常に浅いので、渋谷駅に入るときには地下ではなく地上3階に入るのですが、これはこの地域の海抜が低いのが原因です。

昔（と今）の埋立地

こちらが一番新しい埋立地で、ゴミと建設用の土を投入して作られています。一番高いポイントは海抜30メートルで、すでに上野や本郷よりも高くなっています。ですから東京湾や海を見ようと思ったら、むしろ坂を上がらなければならないのです。

数百年前から寺が建っていた浅草は、周囲より少し高くなっていることがわかります。これは国土地理院が航空機によるレーザー測量を行って得たデジタル地形データを使って、標高1m以下の微小な地形を表示したものです。

階段状の都市景観

都心の地形には、建築の敷地が現れています。開発は土地を平坦にしますが、それは区画ごとに行われるものなので、まるでモザイクのようになって、地域全体の形は残ります。

…それは区画と区域が、という意味でしょうか？

建物を建てると元々の地形の高低差が分からなくなると思うでしょうが、屋根の傾斜があるので地形は依然として屋根に残るのです。

都市化の本質とは、水がちゃんとはけるように、平坦で乾いた地面を作ることです。そうすることで地形を屋根の上にシフトさせて、居住区を乾燥した平坦な土地にします。それでも水は必要となりますが…。

その水はどこから来るのですか？

実は東京の80%の水は、山のほうにあるダムからきています。一日の供給量は600万トンで、東京が消費する水の量は、都内の降水量のほぼ2倍にあたります。

その結果、東京は山から来る水に依存しています。こちらが都内の上水道本管を表した地図です。水道局は上水を水圧で流れるようにしているので、こちらはまるで道路システムかクモの巣のような非常に興味深い形になっていますが、下水道は自然の地形の傾斜を使って低いほうへ流すれていくようにしなければならないのです。

面白いことに、それぞれの家が上水道システムの終着点であり、下水道システムの開始点なのです。その2つの間の距離はわずか20cmですが、水の状態はまったく変わってしまいます。飲料に適したきれいな水が、次の瞬間には汚い、できるだけ早く目の前から消えてほしい水に変わってしまう。そしてその二つをショートカットで結ぶ装置がトイレです。なので、この装置に座るということは、まるで都市の意識と無意識を同時に体現しているようなものです。

Totoの便器が都市の象徴ですか？（笑）

そう、トイレがその中間にある、関節のような場所なんです。

では次は、石川さんのGPSの追跡機能を使った試みについて教えてください。

自分だけの地形図：GPSのトレーシング機能

石川さんの自宅から赤坂までの通勤ルートをトレースしたものと…

左側が私の自宅で、右側が赤坂です。本物の地図によると、赤坂周辺の海抜は自宅よりも40メートルほど低いのですが、駅からのルートに階段があるせいで、私の感覚では赤坂のほうが自宅よりも高い場所にあるように感じられます。

…都内にある自宅と職場の間を徒歩で移動した際に記録される標高差。海抜57メートルの自宅から海抜11メートルの職場までの過程。中間の低い部分は下北沢駅での徒歩の記録。

一般的な平日の統計。通勤の総距離は22.89km、徒歩で歩いた距離は1.138km、107歩が上りで66歩が下っている。

標識

石川さんが毎日東京で見かける標識や文章…。

都会は標識や様々な文章や文字で満ち溢れています。私はそういったものを見るたびに、それが自宅から職場までの間に遭遇する、私だけの詩のように、こうやって記録に残すようにしています。

更なるトレーシング

これは私の自宅と最寄り駅の衛星画像です。これはこれで面白いものの、自分がこの画像のどこにいるのかはわからなければ、孤立したままの状態になってしまいます。ですがそこにGPSでトレースした画像を重ねてみると、自分がどこにいるのかが即座にわかるようになりますし、そうすることによってそれぞれの人の個人的な体験とこの大きな地図をつなぐことができるのです。そこがGPS装置のすばらしいところですね！

私がGPSが好きな理由の一つに、データを集めるには、GPSを持って外を出歩かなければならないということがあります。このGPSの絵を描こうと思ったら、自転車を出して丸一日をかけなければならない。GPSは最先端を行くテクノロジーであり、1メートル以下の精度で色々なものの位置を知ることができるのに、それを使うには現実の土地を本当にアナログな方法で体験しなければならないのです。
