メタモルフォーゼ08：闇夜を照らすデコレーション

メタモルフォーゼ08のプラネットステージ。遠くから見ると、ディズニーのエレクトリック・パレードのよう！

今年も8月23日と24日の二日間、静岡県伊豆市で野外エレクトロニック音楽祭「メタモルフォーゼ08」が行われた。例年会場となるサイクルスポーツセンターの敷地面積は、およそ168万平方メートル！普段は家族連れで賑わう広大な園内も、この時ばかりはエレクトロミュージックに包まれ、若者で溢れ返る。過去に参加したことがある人なら分かるかもしれないが、メタモルフォーゼでは、3ステージからなる会場を移動する際、音楽だけでなく様々なデコレーションも楽しむことができる。夜のイベントなので当然ながら光るものがメインだが、かかる音楽が音楽なだけに、なかなか興味深い作品が多い。そこで今日は、メタモルフォーゼ08の「光るデコレーション」の数々を皆さんにご紹介していきたい。

デコレーションの出どころを調べてみると、照明のプロ、デザイン会社、美大生、作家まで様々。ここに並ぶ作品は、なかなか実験的なものが多く、音楽だけではないイベントにしようとしている主催者の懐の深さが感じられる。そう、メタモルフォーゼはある意味で「光」の展覧会でもあるのだ。

ソーラーステージ

メイン会場のソーラーステージでは、会場後方に大きな光るデコレーションがいくつか並んでいる。制作者達は、限られた制作期間の中で、素材、電源の確保、設置場所などあらゆる点を考慮し、試行錯誤しながら実験を重ねてこの日に挑んでいる。

最初に声をかけたのは、巨大なキューブに映像を写し出すインスタレーションを行っていたデザイン制作会社、イメージソース。ここ数年、ウェブだけでなくインスタレーションにも力を入れている彼らは、「メタモルフォーゼは、リアルなモノ作りや新たな作品に対する実験の場でもあります。その場で見た人の反応がすぐに分かるのも楽しいですね。」と語っていた。

PingMagの生みの親でもあるイメージソースの「CUBE Installation」。作品の前に立つと、小さなカメラが見学者の姿を取り込み、様々な形に変えて映し出す。動画はコチラ！

饅頭のような形のデコレーションは、IAMASの菅沼聖さんと越智正洋さんによる作品。思わず触れてみたくなるほど、愛嬌がある可愛らしい作品。

地下道を照らす照明を制作したのは、IAMASの柴田悠基さんとヨシダホーセーさん。道の先にあるサウンンドブースの音を照明パターンにリンクさせ、ノリノリのお客さんをブースに届けるという縁の下の力持ちを目指したそうだ。

同じく地下道に置かれた、IAMASの松木さん、大石さん、柏木さんによるLEDのキューブ。文字やアニメーションを3Dで映し出す。元々は、DIY雑誌「メイク」からインスピレーションを得たものだそう。

まるで満月のように闇夜に浮かぶ大きな白いバルーン。制作者の「こっつ」は、チーム設立時からメタモルフォーゼに作品を提供するクリエイター集団だ。一方、暗い森の中でフラッシュをたくと、それに反応してピカピカ光る装置を制作したのは、IAMASのshokenさん。「暗闇の中の木々が写真の中では光り輝く、という効果を狙ったもの」とのことだが、気づいた人は意外に少なかったのではないだろうか。

プラネットステージ

ソーラーステージから見ると、何が起こっているのか気になるほど光を放っているプラネットステージ。トライバルな雰囲気のある山の上のこちらのステージでデコレーションを担当していたのは、SHINKILOWという照明家集団。1998年より伊地知完を中心に本格的な活動を開始し、物や人を照らし出す光から、光そのものが主人公となるような美しく不思議な光までを創作している。

プラネットステージに登る途中のインスタレーションもSHINKILOWによる作品。登る人も降りる人も不思議な照明を楽しんでいた。

どこかアナログな印象があるので、何かこだわりがあるのか聞いてみると、「活動の基本である楽しく美しく不思議な光、音楽的な光、生きた光を表現するにあたり、現状アナログ的手法が多くなっています。」とのこと。迫力溢れるその光には、異世界に誘われるような感覚さえ覚える。

ルナーステージ

唯一の屋内ステージであるルナーステージへの道は、果てしなく長い。そのため、途中で見かける光モノはやけに目につく。ソーラーステージエリア後方からプラネットステージまでぐるっと回る導線上に現れたのは、オーバーヘッズによる光の作品。他にもヤマハのテノリオンのデモブースが開設されていたが、道が長いだけに来場者達が身につけている光るアイテムの方がよほど目立っている。

メタモルフォーゼの開催中、ひたすら光り物を調査したせいかジェネレーターが気になった。よく見てみると、どのデコレーションにも大きなジェネレーターがついている。今回、出演が話題になったマニュエル・ゲッチング&アシュラを皆が気分よく聞けるようにか、そのステージの後ろにもとびきり大きなジェネレータ軍団があった。あの素晴らしい音や映像、光を使うためには、巨大な機材、電源を山の中にある会場に持ち込まなければならず、人手や時間も必要だ。光の陰にある沢山の人の苦労と努力こそが、このメタモルフォーゼを作り出しているのだろう。
