トム・ヒングストン・スタジオ：音楽をビジュアルに変える

今現在グラフィックデザイナーとして活躍する人も、グラフィックデザインを勉強している最中の人も、グラフィックに興味を持ったきっかけが大好きなバンドのアルバムカバーやクラブのフライヤーだった、という人は意外に多いのではないだろうか？90年代半ばより、ロンドンを拠点に活躍するトム・ヒングストンは、イースト・ロンドンが盛り上がるきっかけとなった今はなきクラブ「ブルーノート」の一連のフライヤーや、マッシヴ・アタックをはじめとする数々のミュージシャン達のアルバム・カバーを手がけてきた。PingMagは、誰もが憧れる音楽系のプロジェクトを10年以上も手がけるトム・ヒングストンさんに、目に見えない「音楽」をビジュアル化する方法についてうかがってみた。

トムさん、まずはあなたのキャリアについて聞かせて下さい。どのようにして、これほどまでに沢山の音楽系のグラフィックを手がけるようになったのですか？

これに見覚えのある人は多いはず！伝説のクラブ「ブルーノート」のロゴも、トム・ヒングストンによるデザイン。

90年代半ばから、ロンドンのホクストン・スクエアにあった「ブルーノート」というクラブのフライヤーをデザインするようになりました。その後、ブルーノートを通して、沢山の才能溢れる人達に知り合ったのです。これから自分のクラブやレコード・レーベルを立ち上げようとするDJ、プロモーター、音楽プロデューサーなどが、僕に一緒に仕事をしないかと声をかけてくれました。たぶん、あれが僕の仕事と音楽が密接に繋がっていったきっかけだと思います。

その後、すぐに独立されて、トム・ヒングストン・スタジオを立ち上げられたのですか？

いえ、当時はネヴィル・ブロディに勤務していました。クラブのアートワークなどの仕事は、夜仕事が終わった後の空いている時間で行っていたんです。しかし、ブルーノートの人気が爆発的なものになっていったのと同時に、それまで週に2、3枚だったフライヤーの仕事が、いつの間にか週に10とか15種類の様々な仕事になってしまい、徐々にそっちが本業になってきてしまいました。そしてある時、覚悟を決めなければならないところまで来てしまったんです。フリーランスとしてやっていくのか、自分の仕事として腰を据えてやっていくのか。結局、自分の会社を設立することを決心しました。

現在はあらゆる種類のプロジェクトをこなしていらっしゃいますが、今回はそれにはあえて触れずに、音楽の為のデザインについて伺わせて下さい。音楽は目に見えないものですが、トムさんは普段それをどのようにビジュアル化していくのでしょう？

どのプロジェクトに関しても、まずはオープン・マインドなアプローチが鍵となります。これはリサーチの過程において柱となるもので、僕達の案を形にし、特徴のあるものにする手助けになります。僕達のアプローチでは、コラボレーションも重要な土台になっています。ここしばらく、僕達のビジョンを実現させるために、最高のフォトグラファーとイメージメイカー達と仕事をしています。

何か例を挙げて詳しく教えて頂けますか？

マッシヴ・アタックのアルバム「コレクテッド」では、バンドの理想となるものや、感情を要約し、伝えるためのシンボルを見つけなければなりませんでした。このアルバムは彼らのベストであったため、一番手っ取り早いのはマッシヴ・アタックのトレードマークである炎を使用することだったでしょう。しかし、その代わりに僕達は新しい素材を使って、アルバム「メザニーン」で使ったテクニック、つまりコラージュか合成写真を採用する方がいいと思いました。この時は、フォトグラファーのニック・ナイトがチームのメンバーとして加わっていて、まず中心的な要素としてバラの花のスチール写真を撮り、そこからその上に他の花びらの層を差し込んでいったのです。何気なくこのバラを見ると、ただ美しい花だと思いますが、もっとよく見てみるとその中にいくつもの花びらの層が隠れていると分かるはずです。

マッシヴ・アタックと築き上げてきた関係は、他のアーティストやバンドとは非常に異なっていて、なんと言うか…プロジェクトがとてもオーガニックなプロセスで進んでゆくんですよ。

オーガニックなプロセスとは…？

まずマッシヴ・アタックのロバートが、そのプロジェクトや楽曲に対する「テーマ」か「言葉」を考えるんです。それから、ロバート、ニック、僕の3人の間で、どのようなビジュアルにしていくかを少しずつ練っていくんです。様々な方向でお互いに押したり引いたりしながら、全員が納得するまで続けます。

最も理想的な仕事の進め方ですね。他にも特にお気に入りのアーティストはいらっしゃいますか？

ナールズ・バークレイは、一緒に仕事をするにはとても素晴らしい人達です。「セント・エルスホエア」のアルバム・カバーのデザインを担当した時は、彼らは絶対にカバーには載りたくないと言ってきかなかったんです（笑）。でもそれは、僕達にとっては素晴らしいことなんですよ。なぜなら、色々な可能性が広がりますからね！彼らから最初に受け取った参考資料は初期のサイケデリアで、その多くは60年代後半から70年代前半の西海岸のイメージでした。しかし、僕がたまたまその時代の、政治的ではなく、皆がキューバと聞いてすぐ連想するようなポスターの作品集をいくつか持っていたんですが、それがその資料よりもずっとサイケデリックで、ずっと面白いんです。それで、アーティスト側に相談すると、その方向へ進めることを快諾してくれました。このようにアーティストからあるレベルの信用を得られることは、本当に素敵なことなんですよ。

では、音楽のためのデザインをする時に最も大切なことは何でしょうか？

僕達にとっては、デザインがその音楽のトーンやムードをうまくとらえることが大切ですが、時には僕達独自の表現やアイディア、ひらめきも重要な要素となってきます。

音楽の為の良いデザインとはズバリ…？

個性と美しさを兼ね備えたもの、ですね。

大好きなアルバムのカバーを教えてください。

僕の中のベスト・カバーは、ビートルズの「ホワイト・アルバム」とピンク・フロイドの「ウィッシュ・ユー・ワー・ヒア」です。

音もデザインも歴史に残る2枚ですね！では最後に、音楽の為にデザインすることの素晴らしさとは何でしょうか？

自分が尊敬していたり、気に入っているアーティストやバンドのためにデザインすることは、とてもエキサイティングです。僕達は自分達が本当に好きな音楽のためにデザインするように心がけています。それが、その仕事を刺激的で楽しいものへと変えてくれるからです。
