色彩豊かな美しい千代紙

ユニークな図柄の江戸千代紙。

美しい花々、文字、家紋などが刷られた和紙、千代紙。その色褪せることない美しいデザインは、今でも多くの人々を魅了し、日々近代化されてゆく私たちの生活に、ちょっとした癒しを与えてくれる。また、時代や地域によって、千代紙の絵柄や色使いなどのデザインは全く異なっている。今日のPingMagでは、様々な千代紙をご紹介します！

上質な「京千代紙」

千代紙の始まりはおよそ1700年頃の京都といわれている。貴族達の贈り物の包装紙として作られた「京千代紙」が最初と言われている。上質な和紙を使って作られた千代紙は、その頃の庶民にとって到底手の届かない高級品だったようだ。元々京千代紙には、貴族の伝統的な文様（有職文様）が施されていたらしいが、町人文化が盛んになるにつれて、徐々にその文様も京都の伝統・文化にちなんだものが増えたのだとか。

梅や菊など、庭に咲く様々な花々や草木が描かれている。

身近な和紙を使った「江戸千代紙」

やがて、江戸時代の中頃になると、絵師・彫師・刷師の3者によって作られる浮世絵の木版手刷りの技術が確立された。その技術の発展とともに、誰もが手にすることのできた身近な和紙を使って、江戸千代紙が作り出されるようになり、庶民も楽しめるようになったのだとか。

江戸千代紙は、様々な役者が描かれた役者柄のひとつとしても知られる「成田屋かまわぬ」など、当時盛んだった観劇をはじめとする江戸の文化にちなんだ粋な柄が多く、華美な色使いが特徴。多くの資料には、江戸千代紙は徳川幕府にも献上され、武家の女性達はこの美しい千代紙を、お菓子や贈り物の包み紙として好んで使っていたそうだ。

東京の谷中（やなか）には、江戸時代から続く「いせ辰（いせたつ）」という老舗の千代紙専門店がある。このお店では、その昔から使用している版木を元に、代々受け継がれてきた手刷りの技術と、当時から馴染みのある和紙で今日も沢山の江戸千代紙を製造している。しかしながら現在は、昔と同じように自然のものを使って作られた絵の具を再現することだけはどうやら難しいようだ。

こちらには、様々な役者の絵が描かれている。

機械で刷られた「室町千代紙」

こちらは手刷りの江戸千代紙とは違い、機械で刷られた室町千代紙。この千代紙の特徴は、古い文字が模様になった「百寿（ひゃくじゅ）」や、鮮やかな緑とオレンジで彩られた「菊五郎格子」、他にも美しいく花開いた「菖蒲皮（しょうぶかわ）」、細かな模様の「鹿の子（かのこ）」など、江戸千代紙に比べて、大きな図柄と派手やかな色が施されているところにある。


文字を模様にしたユニークなデザインの「百寿」はお祝いごとに。

ポップな配色の「菊五郎格子」は歌舞伎役者の三代目尾上菊五郎が考案した柄。

しなやかで美しい菖蒲を大胆に描いた「菖蒲皮」。

可愛らしい細かい模様の「区田鹿の子」。

越前和紙で作られた「和染千代紙」

こちらは、和紙づくりで有名な福井県の越前和紙に、京千代紙の文様が入った「和染千代紙」。越前和紙は表面が粗く不均一だが、裏面はさらっとした手触りになっている。また、軽くて丈夫にできているので、ちょっとやそっとのことでは破けたりしない。そんな優れた和紙で出来た千代紙は、小箱の表張りなど紙細工に重宝されているのだとか。

竹久夢二のモダンな千代紙

こちらは大正ロマンを代表する画家、竹久夢二が装丁デザインした図案を使って千代紙にプリントしたもの。夢二といえば、色白でしなやか、そしてセンチメンタルな美人画が有名だが、彼は日本画をはじめとし、水彩画や木版画、またデザインなど、あらゆる分野でマルチな才能を発揮した。そんな作家が描いた図案は、なんとも愛らしい日傘やマッチ。またそこからは、西欧の文化が入って来た当時の日本の背景をも感じとれる。ちなみに夢二の図案がデザインされた千代紙は、東京の竹下夢二美術館でも見ることができる。

千代紙を使って

千代紙は、小箱の張り紙、鶴や和紙人形を作る紙、他にもブックカバーやプレゼントの包装紙としてなど、工夫次第でどんな風にでも楽しむことができる。
