土にかえる水風船

涼しげな水風船。今日は水風船の工場を訪れます！

夏祭りではお馴染みの水風船。ピンクや水色の派手やかな色が楽しくて、水にプカプカ浮かぶ姿はとても涼しげ。好きな色を釣ってはヨーヨーにしたり、友達と投げ合ったりして、子供の頃によく遊んだもの。しかしこの水風船、よく見てみると、ちょっとサイケデリックな色と柄が施されている。一体どのように、これらの色や柄は描かれるのだろう？また、どのようにして作られるのだろう？今日のPingMagは、涼しげな水風船の作り方をご紹介します！

やって来たのは千葉県の君ケ浜にある伊藤ゴム風船工業所。駅を降りると潮の香りが漂い、目の前にはのどかな田園風景。そして海の方には白い灯台がそびえ立つ！

伊藤房雄さんと奥さんの陽子さん夫婦が始めて30年にもなるこの工場は、製造販売を全て独自で賄っている。ここでは主に、巨大なものやオリジナル柄が入ったものなど、様々な風船を製造しているが、春から秋初旬までは水風船も作っている。では早速、その製造過程の様子を見学させていただくことに。

暑い中、懸命に働く伊藤夫妻。

大きいサイズのものや薄らラインが入ったものなど、ここで作られる風船の種類は様々。

最初に奥さんが見せてくれたのは、直径10センチほどの細長い、小さな球が頭についたフラスコのようなガラスの型。まずこの型を、液体状にした白色のゴムにつけ、透明になるまで温室で乾かす。

容器を逆さまにして白いゴム液につける。

温室で透明になるまで乾かす。

暫く置いて透明になったら、次は柄を入れる作業。左から赤、青、シルバーの糸状に垂れる液体ゴムに、2、3回さっとガラスを通して模様をつけていく。その様子は下の動画から！

見学していて気になったのは、ガラス容器を温室へ運ぶのも柄をつけるのも、ここでは全て人の手によって作業が行われているということ。最近では機械まかせの製造が主流なのに、何故だろう？

「うちの水風船は全部手作りだから、機械で作ったのよりもゴムが柔らかいんだ。たとえば柄入れでも、機械で柄を入れる場合、まず色をつけてからその上に柄を重ねていく。そうすると、ゴムがかなり分厚くなってしまうんだよ。でも手作業だと、要領は悪いけれど、柄を先に入れることで、柄と色の割合が均等になるんだよ。」（伊藤さん）

速くて正確な作業を黙々と繰り返す奥さん。風船作りも同時進行！

風船を手で作っているところは、県内でも唯一ここだけなのだそう。更に驚くことに、この水風船は土に還るようにできているのだとか。

「最近では石油を原料とした合成ゴムで作られている風船が殆どでしょ？でもうちの風船は、ゴムの木の樹液から作られた“天然ゴム”を使っているから日に当たると変色してしまって、1週間ほどで表面がベタベタしてくるけど、その代わりゴミにならずに、みんな土に還るんだよ。」（奥さん）

柄を乾かしたら、次は色をつける作業。液状のゴムにごみが浮いてないかを確認してから、柄入りのゴムを入れていく。次に、この液体を固める特殊な液につけて、再び温室で乾かす。この工程が、ゴムに厚みを持たせるために、あと4回ほど繰り返される。この日は涼しかったが、それでも工場内は熱気でムンムン！工場では1日におよそ2万個もの風船が製造されるらしく、夏場はもっと暑い中で過酷な作業が行われるのだろう…。


ごみやほこりはピンセットで取り除き、ゴム液の表面をキレイにする。

そして、液につける。

ゆっくりと上がって来る。

温室にいれて乾くのを待つ。

ところで、伊藤さんには工場で風船を作る他にもう一つの顔がある。それは、イベントやパーティーで華麗なバルーンアートさばきを披露するピエロ！

「子供って風船が好きでしょ？風船で犬とか作ると凄く喜んでくれるし、笑ってくれると嬉しいんだ。だから、そんな風船が私も大好きでね。」（伊藤さん）

液体ゴムの作業が終わったら、ゴム同士がくっつかないように白い粉をつけ、そして、空気を入れる「口」の部分を作る段階へと進む。回転するたわしのようなブラシがついたローラーに、ゴムをゆっくり通すと、たちまちクルクルっとした口が巻かれていく。

従業員の方に話を聞いたところ、2人ともこの工場がとても好きだと言う。気配りのきく温かい人達で、毎日お喋りをしながら楽しく働いているそうだ。また、自然が豊かで人も穏やかな、この君ケ浜も大好きなのだそう。

従業員の方々。工場には、熱を逃がすための扇風機がいくつも窓辺に設置されている。

そして最後は、口のついた水風船を、クルクル外し、粉を払って完成！


さすがに従業員は手慣れていて、外すのがとても早い！
