Royal-T：LAに現れたメイド喫茶&現代美術ギャラリー！

今年4月にグランドオープンした「Royal-T」は、現代美術ギャラリーとメイド喫茶が組み合わせられた、LAのニュースポット！

アニメ、フィギュア、コスプレなど秋葉原を中心に巻き起こっているオタク文化は、今や富士山、芸者、テクノロジーに継いで、日本を象徴するもののひとつになったと言っても過言ではない。そして、その中でもすっかり市民権を得た「メイド喫茶」が、海を越えて、全米中のセレブとオタクが集まる街・LAに、現代美術のギャラリー（&ショップ）と併設して開店したという情報を私達は掴んだ！日本が生んだオタク文化は、現代美術を巻き込んで、一体どのようにアメリカナイズされてしまったのか？興味津々のPingMagは、早速、アメリカ初のメイド喫茶で、現代美術のアートスペース＆ショップでもある、噂の「Royal-T」を調査してみた。

LAのダウンタウンから車で西に20分程の所に位置する、カルバーシティ。映画関係のスタジオが多く存在するため、元々は「映画の街」として知られていたこの地域は、ここ数年、新しいギャラリーが続々と立ち並ぶ「アートの街」としても知られるようになってきた。昨年12月、その一角にアートスペース「Royal-T」がオープン、そして今年4月には併設した待望のメイド喫茶もオープンした。およそ10,000スクエアフィートにも及ぶ、日本のメイド喫茶からは考えられない広大な敷地、プラスチックの緑の芝に覆われた壁とガラス張りのエントランスは、まるでファニチャーショップを思わせる佇まいだ。

ウィンドウから見えるオブジェの多くは、この店のオーナーでもあるアート・コレクター、スーザン・ハンコックさんの所有物。ここ数年、日本の現代アートに魅せられ続けている彼女は、村上隆や奈良美智など、世界的に著名な日本人現代美術作家の作品をこのメイド喫茶…いや、アート・スペースに展示している。

中に入ると、現代美術の作品を背に、日本で見慣れたメイド姿のウェイトレスが、「ようこそRoyal-Tへ！」と笑顔で出迎えてくれる。差し出されたメニューの「今日のスープ」に目をやると、その横には英語で「詳細はあなたのメイドに聞いてくださいね」という注意書き！

そして驚くべきは、その斬新なメニューの数々。「Royal-T」という名前だけあり、15種類にも及ぶお茶のセレクションには、「トーキョー・ブレック・ファースト」「キョウト・サンセット」など、喉も乾いていないのにオーダーせずにはいられない個性的な名前が並ぶ。


サンドウィッチには、「味噌チキンと大根」「新鮮な野菜とわさびマヨネーズ」など、日本食にカリフォルニア・テイストが加わった本気のヘルシーフード！こちらは、サワードウにアボカドとスパイシー・ツナがのったもの。

ゆず、えび、アスパラ、トマト、アボカドのヘルシーなサラダ。ここではケチャップでハートが描かれたチープなオムライスは登場しない。

それにしても、メイド喫茶とショップと現代美術のアートスペースという、今まで誰も思いつかなかったこの目からウロコの組み合わせは、一体どのようにして生まれたのだろうか…。オーナーのスーザンさんに話を聞いてみた。

「2年前に、広島市現代美術館のキュレーターである神谷幸江さんと一緒に奈良美智さんのGraf A to Z展に出かけました。その展示には、カフェとショップがあり、誰もが食事とショッピングを楽しんでいました。その時、神谷さんが私に村上隆さんと長い間仕事をしているGoto Designの方達を紹介してくれました。そこで私が、茶室とショップを併設した空間に、自分の所有する現代美術の作品を展示したいという話をしました。すると彼らがメイド喫茶のアイディアを思いついたのです。それから、名前やロゴ、日本の面白い商品や私のコレクションのアーティストの作品などを扱うショップのアイディアを次々と思いつきました。私は、自分のコレクションを多くの人に楽しんでもらいたいと思っていましたから、今は本当に満足しています。今後は、3ヶ月毎に新しいキュレーターを迎えて展示を行い、子供達に日本の現代美術やストリート・カルチャーも紹介しながら、楽しいイベントをどんどん行っていくつもりです。美味しい食事とお茶、アートは、ここを訪れる人にとって、きっと素晴らしい体験になるでしょう。」（スーザンさん）

奇抜なファッションをした日本人の女の子の特大写真は、フォトグラファーの吉永マサユキ氏によるもの。

ご存知、奈良美智の「The Little Pilgrims (night walking)」。

オープン以来、メイド喫茶ばかりが注目されがちなRoyal-Tだが、実は日本の素晴らしい現代美術作品をLA市民に紹介している立派なアートスペースであることが分かった。今後は、LAを訪れる日本のアーティスト達にも発表の場としてどんどん利用して欲しいそう。LAを訪れる予定の日本のアーティストの皆さんは、事前に連絡することを忘れずに！LAの皆さんは、現在開催中の「ジャスト・ラブ・ミー」展をお見逃しなく！
