街の研究：ギャルの渋谷とOLの丸の内

Y字路に分かれた渋谷の109前の交差点。

昨年9月に、原宿と巣鴨を比較した「巣鴨から学ぶ、お婆ちゃんのためのデザイン」で、私達は些細なことながらも沢山の違いを発見した。今回は、若者の街、そしてギャルの街として知られている「渋谷」と、「丸の内OL」という呼び名がつくほどOLが多いビジネス街「丸ノ内」の二つの街を比較して、その違いを検証してみたい。

1. 駅

その利用者数の多さに比べて、通路の幅が狭く、なぜかやたらと階段の多い渋谷駅。しかし、常に人が溢れているだけあり、通路の大きな「乗り場案内」は色分けされ、遠くからでも目立つようになっている。


ピーク時には、大混雑状態になる、半蔵門線の渋谷駅近辺の通路。

一方、丸ノ内線・東京駅近辺の地下鉄通路の幅は広く、道は平らで歩きやすい。また、壁全体が白で統一されていて、どこか上品な照明がオフィスへ向かうOLさん達を優しく包み込んでいる。乗り場案内の文字は、渋谷と比べ小さいが、シンプルでスタイリッシュだ。

丸ノ内線・東京駅近辺の地下鉄通路。まるで宇宙船の中のよう…。ちなみに、丸の内は皆さんもご存知のように、近年、再開発が進んでいる。

いたってシンプルなデザイン。

ここで驚いたのは、東京駅の改札近くに置かれた観葉植物。人でごった返す渋谷駅なら、5秒もしないうちに蹴飛ばされてなくなっているだろう…。また、ホームには、転落防止用のドアも設置されているなど、安全性を重視した作りも特徴だ。

2. 街の様子

その1. 広告

JR渋谷駅から一歩外に出ると、無数の広告に圧倒される。その種類は、単なるポスターから、大型スクリーンに映し出されるCM、街角で配られるティッシュ、店内から流れる音の広告まで、とにかく様々…。そして、細い路地へ入っても、その広告の波はおさまることはない…。

遠くからも見えるほど大きな広告。

細い路地も広告だらけ。

そして、お店も広告だらけ…。

路上では広告入りティッシュを配る人も。

丸ノ内は、オフィスビルが多いせいだろうか、広告の数が極めて少ない。そのせいか、雰囲気だけでなく実際に聞こえて来る音もあまりなく、しんと静まり返っている。また、どこかニューヨークを思わせるような巨大なビルが立ち並ぶため、ボンヤリしていると自分がどこの国にいるのか分からなくなってしまいそうだ。

細い路地も見当たらない。ここは一体どこだ…。

シーン…。なんの広告もない、あっさりとした景色。

その2. 緑と休憩所

エネルギッシュな若者の街、渋谷には憩いの場は必要ないのだろうか、くつろげるようなスペースはなく、緑もさほど多くない。しかし、本格化するヒートアイランド現象の対策として、最近では屋上に庭園や菜園を作る人達も少なくないようだ。

実は屋上に緑があったりする渋谷。こちらは渋谷区役所の屋上庭園。

一方、皆ガーデンニグに夢中なのかと思わせるほど、緑溢れる丸の内。美しく施された花の鉢植えがあちこちに置かれ、仕事で疲れたサラリーマンを想ってか、休憩所などのスペースも配慮された作りになっている。

その3. 道の様子

渋谷は坂道が多く、街のいたるところがY字路になっている。しかしこの複雑な地形にこそ、渋谷独特の面白さが潜んでいる。たとえば、Y字路で有名な109の交差点は、右に進むとギャラリーや劇場のある文化村、左に行くとクラブやラブホテルが集まる道玄坂へ。それぞれの方向には、そこにしかない景観が待っている。そう、渋谷の街では、あらゆるところで全く違った景色に出会うことが出来るのだ。

チリひとつなさそうな、丸ノ内の歩道。また道の幅も広く、真っ直ぐに伸びているので見晴らしは良い。しかし、路面店だらけの渋谷とは違い、店舗の殆どがビルの中に入っているため、丸の内OLではない私にはどこかしら閉鎖的な感じすらした…。

3. 商品のラインナップ

集まる人が違えば、そこで売られるものが違うのも当然。渋谷には若者が好みそうな炭酸系の飲み物が並んだコカ・コーラの自動販売機が多いが、丸の内では炭酸系のものはあまりなく、お茶やコーヒーなどが殆ど。また、渋谷のコンビニには、ギャル系雑誌が多いのに比べ、丸の内は働く女性達に向けた雑誌が多いのも、大きな違いだ。

渋谷と丸の内を比べてみて、何か発見はありましたか？現在、渋谷では2012年完成予定の新渋谷駅をはじめ、再開発に向けてのプロジェクトが進められています。近い将来、渋谷も丸の内のような街へと変わっていくのでしょうか…？皆さんのご意見もぜひ、お聞かせください！

  2. 私は大学で街や空間の研究をしています。
    確かに街によって本当に色々な特徴ありますよね。コンビニの雑誌の種類など着目点が鋭く具体的でおもしろいと思いました。
    他にも自動販売機に置かれている飲み物の種類なんかも違ってきたりしますよね。そういう点を注意しながら街を歩くといつもの街がちょっと違って見えたりもしますね。
