心を形にする包み、折形

ひと昔前の日本の家庭では、お客様の帰り際に、和紙などでお菓子をサっと包み、手みやげとして差し上げていた。室町時代から伝わる「折形（おりがた）」は、贈り物を包む紙の折り方のこと。PingMagは、そんな古くからある日本の習わしを、取り入れやすい形で、私達の生活に提供してくれる折形デザイン研究事務所の西村優子さんに、その活動などについて色々とお話を伺った。

折形デザイン研究所が始まったのは、代表の山口さんが古本屋で見つけた「折形」の本がきっかけだとお聞きしましたが、折形とはどのようなものなのでしょうか？

折形は身近にある和紙で物を包むという、室町時代から伝わる武家の礼法で、当時は昆布や扇子なども贈答する物は全て、和紙に包み贈られました。それも簡単に包むのではなく、物の形や送る相手に合った包み方、つまり「折形」が決められていました。また、物の数だけ包み方が作られてきたので、その種類の多さは驚くばかりです。

更に調べてみると、冠婚葬祭で使用される「熨斗袋」や「祝儀袋」も、実は折形のひとつなんです。主宰の山口は、自分たちが使いたい熨斗袋がなかったこともあり、それなら現代でも受け入れやすい簡単な折り方を自分で考案すればいいのでは、と始めたのがこの研究所なのです。

では、今までに研究所で考案された折形を見せて頂けますか？

こちらは新茶の包みです。ご覧の通り、昔のものは沢山のひだが重ねられ、見た目にもとても豪華です。しかし、これを折るために折り方を覚えるのも大変で、時間も掛かる。そこで生まれたのがこの簡素な折形です。

折形の一番の特徴とは何でしょうか？

折形の特徴は、ラッピングのように全てを包まないところにあります。例えばこのお酒にしても、瓶の部分が見えるように白い和紙で包みます。そこには「お礼、感謝の心」が込められていてる。折形は、包みそのものが贈り主のメッセージなのです。

他にも折形には色々な表現があります。こちらは吉凶の包み。「吉の包み」は、必ず折り端が右前になるよう、少し隙間を作り、折り合わせられます。それは喜びの心の姿を表しています。「凶の包み」の場合は、左前に折り端が来るようぴったり合わせられ、それは「凶を塞ぐ姿」を表しているのです。

研究所では、折形に使う紙もデザインされているとお聞きしました。この事務所と併設された「Shop様方堂」でも様々にデザインされた紙が置いてありますね。

以前は市販の和紙を使っていたのですが、和紙は通常、大きなサイズで売られているので、持ち帰るにも、小さくに切るにも、日常的に使うには不便。日常生活の中に折形を取り入れることのネックの一つでした。そこで、岐阜・美濃の和紙の若手職人に協力して頂き、半紙サイズの紙を一緒に作ることになったんです。

折形以外に、何か他にも研究されていますか？

「そもそも何故人は包むのか？」ということや、紙を折ることの造形の可能性をも追求しています。Shop様方堂は、私達が開発したり、作り出したものを紹介する場でもあるんですよ。

相手のことを思いやり、一手間加えるだけで心のこもったものになります。日常の中でも折形をご活用頂けたらと思います。
