真っ白な壁にサヨウナラ！新しい建設現場の仮囲い

工事現場に囲まれた白い壁のことを「仮囲い」という。街の片隅に突然現れる白く大きい壁は、その景観に無機質なイメージを与え、見る人々に中で何が行われいるのかという疑問を抱かせる。しかし、最近東京の随所で、仮囲いの壁面を利用した様々なプロジェクトを見るようになった。今回のPingMagでは、数カ所をピックアップして興味深い仮囲いを紹介したい。

1. アート作品として

四季のランドスケープと沢山の動物達が描かれたのは、渋谷区広尾のマンション開発の工事現場の仮囲い。2006年にイラストレーターのミヤギユカリさんによって、全長約343メートルの仮囲いにアートワークが施された。そのゆったりとしたドローイングや優しい色使いは、街の風景として不思議な形でなじんでいる。工事終了後には取り外されてしまったそうだが、工事期間だけ楽しめる夢の空間となっていたようだ。現在は、写真集「Town Dream Dream Town」で楽しむことができる。

2. 工事の風景を伝える

SOUP DESIGNと建設会社TAISEI DESIGNが2006年、銀座のビル工事現場で手がけた「DIARY」と題された仮囲いでは、工事中に発生した端材の分別容器をディスプレーした。もちろん、分別された端材はリサイクルされ、新しい材料になって戻ってくる。通常は工事の様子を覆い隠してしまう仮囲いだが、どのような材料がどの位使われているのか、建物が出来上がるまでの作業の様子や端材を見せることで、周囲の人達に安心感を与えている。

3. 街のアイデンティティを伝える

都内では各地で再開発が行われている。長い時間を費やす再開発の工事期間は、空白でありながら、新しく生まれ変わる街の未来について考えるきっかけともなる。仮囲いを媒体として、街の歴史や街に関わる人々のポートレートなど、様々な形でその街のアイデンティティを表現している3地区の仮囲いを紹介したい。

その1：新宿サザンビートプロジェクト

新宿駅南口をすぐ出た所にある国道20号線の工事現場には、全長約320メートルの仮囲いがある。完成予定が2016年と非常に長い時間を要する工事であるだけに、普通の仮囲いだと見る方も飽きてしまう…。そんな中、2005年から開始された「新宿サザンビートプロジェクト」は、仮囲いが新しいメディアとなって進行中。毎年掲げられたテーマごとに表現されるグラフィック、写真、ライトアップなどは、工事現場の職員、市民も参加し、新宿を訪れる多くの人々の足を止める興味深いものになっている。

その2：ひきふね画

東京のイーストサイド、墨田区曳舟駅前の再開発現場では「ひきふね画」と題された風景としての仮囲いを見ることが出来る。これは2006年から開始された、UR都市機構と新宿サザンビートプロジェクトのデザインも手がけたステュディオ・ハン・デザインによるプロジェクトだ。このプロジェクトでは、下町ならではの魅力を再発見できるような写真や詩的な言葉を通して、地域の生活風景を伝えている。また、9色のグラデーションで変化する照明のライトアップが、人通りの少ない夜間に防犯ともなっている。地元の住人からは「明るい風景になった」と多くの共感を得ているそうだ。

その3：日本橋今昔〜江戸と未来をつなぐ橋〜

現在、中央区日本橋では、地名の由来にもなった江戸時代に架けられた「日本橋」の景観を取り戻すための再開発が進行中。その一環として、三井第三別館地下解体工事の4つの通りに面した仮囲いでは、「日本橋今昔〜江戸と未来をつなぐ橋〜」と題された展示が行われている。それぞれの面では、江戸、明治・大正、昭和の日本橋の風景の絵や写真に加えて、地元の小学生によって未来の描かれた日本橋が展示されている。歴史ある街の時代巡りや、子どもたちの未来への思いを、歩きながら存分に楽しむことが出来る。

「日本橋今昔〜江戸と未来をつなぐ橋〜」。通りごとにそれぞれの時代の日本橋を見ることが出来る。
