東京の建築ストリート：表参道パート1

JR原宿駅の表参道口から出て、目の前にのびる表参道を歩いて行くと、たった15分程の間に世界の著名な建築家達によって設計された建物の数々を見ることができる。それは、ここ数年「建築ストリート」として徐々に人々に知られるようになった程だ。観光で東京を訪れる人も多くなるこの季節、今日は普段何気なく歩いている表参道に並ぶこの素晴らしい「作品」の数々を、2回に分けて世界中の皆さんと一緒に見ていきたいと思う。

1. GYRE（ジャイル）

明治神宮を背に、お馴染みのファッション・ビル「ラフォーレ原宿」がある明治通りへと表参道を進んでみよう。十字路に到着したら三菱東京UFJ銀行側に移動し、さらに直進。カフェ・ラウンジ「モントーク」、観光客で溢れ返る「キディランド」超えて、すぐ右手に見えてくるのが、昨年11月にオープンしたばかりの商業施設「GYRE（ジャイル）」だ。設計を手がけたのは建築都市、オランダ・ロッテルダムを拠点にする建築家集団「MVRDV」。アムステルダムの「高齢者のための100戸の集合住宅：オクラホマ」や、「シロダム」を手がけた彼らは、ここ東京にも美しい作品を作り上げた。各階が捩じれるように見えるこの建物のテーマは、「GYRE」という単語の意味でもある「渦、回転」。外のテラスを結ぶ階段を自分の足で上がれば、自らこの渦を体感することができる。

2. ディオール表参道

そのすぐ隣で、半透明のカーテンを揺らしているように見える「ディオール表参道」。妹島和世（せじま・かずよ）と西沢立衛（にしざわ・りゅうえ）の両氏による建築家ユニット、SANAA（サナー）により設計され、2003年に施工した。女性のドレスの裾をも彷彿させるこのカーテン状のものは、実はアクリルにドレープをつけたもの。夜になるとその様子は、中から発せられる光によってエレガントな雰囲気から神秘的な雰囲気に変わってゆく。SANAAは、これまでに金沢21世紀美術館やドイツ、エッセンのツォルフェライン・スクールの設計も担当している。

3. 日本看護協会ビル

ディオールからさらに3軒先にある「日本看護協会ビル」は、通りより少し下がった位置にある巨大なガラスの正面玄関が目印。昨年10月に死去した黒川紀章（くろかわ・きしょう）氏によって設計されたこの建築物のテーマは、日本看護協会の機能と品格を保ちながら、表参道という土地と共生させること。右手に寄り添うように付いた地上8階まで伸びる円錐形のモニュメント「クリスタルコーン」は、同じく黒川氏によって設計され、昨年オープンした国立新美術館の正面玄関でも見ることができる。

4. 表参道ヒルズ

表参道を挟んだ反対側は、日本の皆さんなら誰もがご存知の「表参道ヒルズ」。以前この場所に立っていた同潤会青山アパートの建て替えに関して、表参道エリアを利用する多くの人々から反対の声が上がったのは今だ記憶に新しい。しかし、無くなったはずの同潤会青山アパートが、この建物の右手に復元されていることをご存知だろうか。2006年2月にオープンした表参道ヒルズを設計したのは、安藤忠雄（あんどう・ただお）氏。建物内の緩やかなスロープの傾斜は表参道と同じ3度に、また建物のあちこちに同潤会青山アパートで使われていた建材が再利用され、屋上は隣に並ぶケヤキ並木と調和させるための植栽が施されている。

5. ルイ・ヴィトン表参道

先程の日本看護協会と同じ並びにある、「ルイ・ヴィトン表参道店」。2002年に竣工したこちらの建築物は、 ルイ・ヴィトン名古屋ビル、松屋銀座店、六本木ヒルズ店、ニューヨーク店など、一連のルイ・ヴィトンの建築物を手がけている青木淳（あおき・じゅん）氏によって設計されたもの。ヴィトンのシンボルであるトランクを高く積み上げたような建物の表面には、ケヤキ並木の葉や枝が写り込み、表参道ヒルズ同様、周囲と調和するよう配慮がなされている。きらびやかなショーウィンドーに目を奪われがちだが、まだケヤキの葉が少ないこの時期に、この美しい建築物を外からたっぷり堪能しておきたい。
