リビングワールド：世界を感じるものづくり

リビングワールドによる作品、「太陽系のそと」。

ただ風が吹くことや、夕日が沈むこと。日常では当たり前に起こっているこれらのことは、よく考えてみれば、不思議な現象ではないだろうか？そう、私達の身の回りは不思議なことで溢れている。プロジェクトのひとつとして2000年からスタートしたリビングワールドは、モノやワークショップを通して、世界の面白さを改めて感じさせる活動をするデザイン事務所。PingMagは、リビングワールドのデザイナー、西村佳哲（にしむら・よしあき）さんと西村たりほさんのお二人に、その活動についてお話を伺ってみた。

最初に、リビングワールドについて簡単に説明して頂けますか？

西村さん：リビングワールドは僕達2人を中心にした小さなデザイン事務所で、会社になったのは2003年です。企業や自治体、博物館や美術館などから依頼される仕事以外に、自分達でものを作ったり、ワークショップなども行っています。

どのようなものを作っていらっしゃるのですか？

西村さん：最近ではこの「太陽系のそと」という銀河系の立体模型です。今まで平面でしか銀河系を見たことがなかったので、立体だとどんな風に見えるかと思ったのです。とは言っても、国立天文台のデーターを元に、ガラスキューブの中にレーザーで、約8万点の恒星データを打ち込んだだけなんですが。僕達は新しいものを作っている訳ではなく、「すでにあるもの」を他の形にして、そのもの自体の面白さを引き出そうとしているんです。

「すでにあるもの」とは？

西村さん：例えば、これは「風灯（ふうとう）」という照明です。風が吹くとフワフワと灯りがつき、その灯りで「風が吹いている」ことを伝えてくれます。

暗くなると、風に応じて灯り始める。

中には、回路と光の源になる太陽光パネルがあり、昼に太陽エネルギーを蓄え、夜に光を放つ。

夜空を舞う風灯はまるでクラゲのよう。

たりほさん：風の他に、ゆっくりとした雲の動きも撮影速度を変えてみると、あらためてその面白さに気づかされます。面白いものって目の凝らしようで、すぐ近くにある、既にあるものだと分かるんですよ。

西村さん：次は、神戸空港の出発ロビーにある「アースクロック」です。太陽に照らされた地球の影の様子を、リアルタイムで見せてくれる時計です。地球の朝や夜も「すでにあるもの」ですよね？

毎分10秒間、地球の映像が針時計に変わるアースクロック。昨年夏には、その時計のデザインをコンクールを通して、子どもたちから募集したのだそう。

これは最初から「大時計を作って欲しい」と頼まれた仕事ではなく、僕達が色々と提案していくなかで形作られた企画なんです。リビングワールドのひとつの特徴は、特定の分野の専門家ではないこと。「何をつくる？」というところから、クライアントと一緒に考えていきます。

内田洋行のコーポレートミュージアムとして作られたプロジェクションテーブル。1900から2100年までの200年分の年表。空白の半分は、未来を表現している。

マジックインキ！内田洋行の過去の商品がアクリルキューブに収められ、壁面の社史に利用されている。

そのキューブをテーブルに置くと、様々な情報が浮かび上がる…凄い！

なるほど…。ところで、なぜ「すでにあるもの」をテーマにものづくりをされたいと思われたのですか？

西村さん：駅のホームで夕焼け空に心を打たれている時、ふと周りを見ると、周囲の人は携帯などに夢中になって気にも止めていないようなことが多々あると感じるんです。自分の身の周りの範囲で生きているだけで、目の前の美しいものにも気づかない、気づく時間すらないような気がします。そういうのって、つまらないですよね？

たりほさん：たとえば「夕焼けがきれい」という感覚は、きっと言語や国境を越えて、多くの人の心にあると思うんです。そういう気持ちをより膨らませるようなものを作っていきたいんですよね。

「星が消えてゆく時間の砂時計」。この砂が落ちる瞬間、100個の星が宇宙から消えてゆく…。「In this time」“ある時間”を示す砂時計シリーズより。

「100人の子どもが生まれる時間」この瞬間にも世界では100人の子供達が生まれている。「In this time」“ある時間”を示す砂時計シリーズより。

西村さん：また、僕達は自発的に何かを作る気持ちを大切にしたいとい思っているんです。

それはなぜでしょう？

西村さん：今のモノづくりの仕事は、分業になり過ぎていると思うんです。デザイナーの守備範囲もとても狭くなって、自分が携わっている仕事の他の過程を知らないことが多い。それはとても不健全だと思うんです。

気持ちが入らないということですか？

西村さん：ええ。仕事に全体性がないっていうのは、エネルギーが切れている感じがしますよね。

たりほさん：自分の持ち場以外にも、視野をすこしでも広げることで、判断や選択においても幅や奥行きが深まると思うんです。


親子で楽しむワークショップ「土の10日間」。その辺の空き地から土を運び、太陽の光と水だけを与えると…

芽が出た！どこの土でも、表面15センチ位には種が埋まっていて、ある程度の条件が揃うと発芽するそう。生命の力は果てしない…。

種もなにも撒いていない土から、自然に生えたアカメガシワ！

では、今後はどのように活動を広げていきたいと思われていますか？

西村さん：同じような感覚を持っている人達と、もっと繋がっていけたら嬉しいです。

  23. A few weeks ago my family and I went on vacation and had to rent a car. When at the car rental counter we were asked if we wanted to buy one day car insurance. Not knowing what 1 day car insurance was at the time time we figured we better be safe then sorry. So of course we did.
