コンビニエンス・ストアでテープを買ったある日のこと。芯の内側をよく見ると、ポップな書体で書かれた文字やパープルにオレンジの可愛らしい色使いなど、そこには何気に素敵なデザインが施されていた。ビニール袋のシンプルなパッケージと見比べてみても、なぜか目立たない芯のデザインにはより多くの努力が注がれている…？今日はなかなか人に気づかれることのないテープのデザインに少し触れてみたいと思います。

沢山あるテープの中でも、特に目を引かれたのは寺岡製作所のガムテープ。円を描く爽やかな青と白のラインに市松模様がアクセントとして添えられ、また青のラインにはメーカーの名前が模様のように入っている。
もうひとつはバンドエイドなどでもよく知られているニチバン。主張し過ぎない素朴なデザインは親しみを感じさせる。聞いたところによると、大正時代の創業当時からそのデザインは変わっていないそうだ。
スリオンテックのガムテープは赤のベースに白のロゴが入ったシンプルなデザイン。ロゴの「O」にテープの伸びる様子が表現されているほど、テープ作りにこだわりがあるようだ。ラッキーなことに、今回このスリオンテック社から営業企画ご担当、田村嘉宏（たむら・よしひろ）さんにお話を聞かせて頂くことができ、早速内側のデザインについてお伺いしてみた。
「袋からテープを出してしまうと、どこのメーカー製か分からなくなってしまいますよね。ですので使い切るまで残る内側の部分は、メーカーをアピールする目的でデザインされています。例えば、テレビ番組でスリオンテックのテープが使われた場合でも、内側の部分が映ればすぐにうちの商品だと分かるんです。これは余談ですが、以前スリオンテックのガムテープの裏にはライオンのマークが入っていたんですよ。」（田村さん）

なるほど！裏のデザインにはそんな狙いが！…と、ここで田村さんよりまた興味深い情報が。
「今、“ガムテープ”と呼びましたが、実は世間一般に認識されている“ガムテープ”は、大体が布製の“布粘着テープ”か紙製の“クラフト粘着テープ”などのことなんです。しかし本来のガムテープは、水を与えると粘着する切手のようなものなんですよ。僕自身も一般の人々と話す時は、理解を得る為にガムテープと呼んでいますが（笑）。」（田村さん）
言われてみると、確かに東急ハンズなどのテープ売り場では様々なテープの種類がある。改めて布やクラフトテープの表面を触ってみるとその質感は全く別のもの。

「少し専門的になりますが、テープのべとべと感＝粘りには“タック”という呼び名があるんです。その粘りが強いほど、タック感があると言います。よくその粘りを間違って“粘着力”と呼ぶ方が多いようですが、粘着力というのはテープを剥がす際に生じる力のことなんですよ。」（田村さん）

最近では一言で「テープ」と言っても、ピンクやライトブルーなどカラフルな色やパターンの種類も豊富でお店のショーウィンドーやアートワークなどにも幅広く活用されている。そして当然、テープを使って作品を作るアーティストも！
