この時期に皆さんがテレビで目にするブラジルのカーニバルは、実は去年の7月に幕を開けたカーニバル・シーズンのグランド・フィナーレにあたるパレード。そしてこの本番で使用される衣装は、どれもが何ヶ月もの時間をかけて入念に手作りされているのだ。本日のPingMagでは、今年の衣装の中でも特に目を引くものをピックアップした。今年のサンバドローム（サンバ走路）では、なんと地球温暖化までもがテーマに仲間入りしている。それでは皆さん、ミスター・バイオディーゼルのご入場！サンバ！

カーニバルの暦
ブラジルのカーニバルは独自の暦で回っている。シーズンの幕開けは7月頃で、サンバチームに所属する人々は前回のパレードの衣装を纏って新しいシーズンの到来を祝い、2月に実際のパレードを行ってシーズンに幕を下ろす。その直後からカーニバル気分は徐々に薄れて行き、寓話的なフロートは解体され、衣装は大切にしまわれることとなる。この時期には金属や木材、ポリスチレンや石膏の名残がいたるところで見られる。
歴史
カーニバルの語源は「肉よ、さらば」を意味するラテン語の「carne vale」に由来しているといわれており、その起源は古代ギリシャの豊穣の神、ディオニュソスの春の祭典であったものが、ローマ人によって自由奔放なサトゥルナリア祭（農耕神祭）へと形を変えていったものだと考えられている。その後のキリスト教においては、カーニバルは灰の水曜日に始まる四旬節の前日に行われるお祭りとして祝われてきた。そしてひとたび四旬節が始まれば、人々は祈りとともに食事を節制し、祝宴はご法度として復活祭までの40日間を過ごすのだ。
19世紀中盤以降にブラジルに深く根付いたカーニバルは、元々は人々が四旬節前に泥や食物、水などを投げつけあうポルトガルのエントゥルードというお祭りが植民者によって伝わったものだといわれている。これはこれで楽しそうだ（そして何となくインドのホーリー祭に似ている気が）！ 今日では、カーニバルは国内のいたるところで開催されており、リオ・デ・ジャネイロ、サンパウロ、サルバドール、レシフェとその近隣のオリンダのものが特に有名だろう。皆さんがテレビで見るカーニバルは、サンバドロームと呼ばれる特設走路で開催されているもの。
会場
サンバチームの大半を見ることのできる最高の見物席といえば、オスカー・ニーマイヤーのプロジェクトに基づいて作られたサンバドローム（サンバ走路）。サンバドロームはいずれも長大で、リオ・デ・ジャネイロのものは700メートル、サンパウロのものは530メートルの全長を誇っている。だがお祭り騒ぎはサンバドロームに限られず、街中のいたるところで祝われている（レシフェ、オリンダやサルバドールでは特に！）。

テーマ
一つのカーニバルのシーズンが終わると、各サンバチームはすぐに来シーズンのテーマを考え始める。題材はなんでもありで、日本からの移民（今年は日本人が初めてブラジルに移住してから100周年）や地球温暖化、髪型やアイスクリームまでもが衣装のテーマとなる。そしてこの題材をプロットとして練り込んだものがパレードの主旨となり、それがちょっとしたフレーズかスローガンとして紙に書き出される。サンバや衣装、フロートの構想は、この組み合わせを基点として作られていく。
カルナバレスコ
各チームの衣装はすべてテーマに基づいて作られ、パフォーマンスはそれぞれの特色を生かしながら作曲家やビジュアル・アーティストたちによって練り込まれていくので、必然的に全体の構成をまとめて演出するプロデューサーが必要となってくる。ビジュアル面に関しては、カルナバレスコと呼ばれる総監督が中心人物となってショーの全体像を考案し、演出を統括する。またこの人物はキーパーソンとして、絢爛豪華なフロートや衣装のデザインに携わることもあれば、チーム全体のまとめ役を兼ねることも少なくない。カーニバルには、彫刻家、画家、ファッション・デザイナー、建築家、時には歴史の専門家など、当然ながら幅広い分野の人間が携わっており、カルナバレスコの責任はコーディネーターとしてその作業を調整するだけでなく、チーム内のコミュニケーションや外部との連絡にまで及んでいる。

カルナバレスコの成否を握るのは、単なるデザインの良し悪しよりもチームに対する思いやり。チームが巨大走路に差し掛かると、観客の目はいっせいに衣装に注がれ、それがチームにとっての決定的な瞬間となる。そして観客が気に入ったと思えば、チーム全体が沸きかえり、最高のパレードが約束されたも同然となる。
衣装！
カーニバルのシーズン中には、サンバドロームでのパレードに向けて、何十個ものフロートや数千着の衣装が作られる。そしてそのすべてがなんと「手作り」なのだ。実際の衣装の出来栄えは、三つのポイントにかかっている。まずはそのサンバチームのスタイル、次にカルナバレスコの好み、そしてぶっつけ本番の共同作業の中で、事前に制作された下絵がどう具現化されるのか。もちろん誰がそれを着るのかも重要になってくる。最終的には、観客の真ん中に入っていけるかどうかは衣装次第で、その他のことは一切関係ないのだ。
ピカピカの金色が車に乗って登場！ヴィラ・イザベラ、サンバチームの衣装。
制作の過程はいたってシンプルなもの。まずカルナバレスコとその助手が、演出とセールスを担当する「chefes de ala」に見せるための試作品を作る。そこから一着を選んで、10月に行われる特別なパーティーでその衣装がコミュニティに披露される。この「chefe de ala」が衣装の制作と販売に合意すれば、それぞれの衣装が試作品とまったく同じ方法で生産される。衣装の一部、もしくは全体が外部のアート・スタジオに外注されることもある。要するに、50人から100人、時にはもっと多くの人間が購入する衣装であるにも関わらず、そのすべてが完全に同一のものなのだ。
そしてカーニバル好きはそのための出費を惜しまない。大抵の衣装は¥37,000前後だが、中には¥534,000もするものもあるというからびっくり！ちなみにこれまで見た衣装の最高額は300万円以上！今すぐ貯金しなくちゃ！
