from Magazines：今、海外雑誌が面白い！

圧倒的なインパクト！イギリス発のファッション誌「SuperSuper」は、去年から巷を騒がせているニューレイブ・ムーブメントの先駆けとなった雑誌。こちらは2007年の10月号より。（Photographer: Kayti Peschke、Styling: Namalee）

洋書を扱う書店を訪れる度に、思わず足を止めてしまう海外雑誌のコーナー。異国の香りが漂う海外雑誌を開くと、そこにはバーチャル海外旅行が待っている…。今月1日、BNN新社より海外雑誌コレクション「from Magazines」が発売された。著者は、バイリンガル・デザイン・マガジン「+81」を創刊し、GASプロジェクトのGAS BOOKなどのディレクションを担当してきた蜂賀亨（はちが・とおる）氏。本日は書籍「from Magazines」を紹介しながら、日本人編集者の蜂賀氏から見た海外雑誌の魅力や、今最も勢いのある雑誌についてお話を伺った。

今月1日、BNN新社から発売された「from Magazines」。

まず、「from Magazines」を出版することになった経緯を教えて頂けますか？

元々、海外雑誌に対してデザイン的に非常に興味があったんです。仕事柄、資料として海外雑誌を参考にしたり、集めたり。海外に出張に行ったら、帰りのスーツケースの中の殆どが雑誌や書籍になってしまうほどなんです。最近はウェブマガジンが増えてゆく一方、紙の雑誌が次々と創刊されてもいます。そんな状況が面白くて、書籍にして取り上げてみようと思いました。

ここにはどれくらいの数の雑誌が収録されているのでしょうか？

原則として国内で入手出来て、デザインと編集が面白いもの、インディペンデントなスタイルをとっているもの、僕が個人的に好きなもの、という基準で選んだ約140誌を紹介しています。

この本を編集してみて、今とても勢いがあると思われた海外雑誌はありますか？

年2回発行のオランダの「Fantastic Man」はメンズ・マガジンですが、内容的にもデザイン的にもパワーがあって、世界からも非常に注目されています。編集長のヨップ・ヴァン・ベネコムは、「RE」や「BUTT」も手がけてきていますが、彼の作るものは毎回とても気になりますね。

もう一つは、イギリスの「SuperSuper」です。デザイン誌にも、カルチャー誌にも取り上げられるレベルで、さすがに元「Sleazenation」をやっていた人間によるものだと思います。大人が新しいテクニックを使って、今のスタイル感を作り出している雑誌です。

では、個人的にワクワクさせられる雑誌はありますか？

この間までダグラス・ロイドがクリエイティブディレクションを担当していた「Arena Homme +」は、最新号からM/M（PARIS）がクリエイティブディレクション＋アートディレクションを担当していて、毎号豪華なメンバーがクリエイションに参加していて楽しみな雑誌です。

最近、フランスの雑誌「WAD」も気になります。タイトルの通り、他のファッション誌と異なる「We Are Different」な感じが面白いですね。


イギリスのメンズ・ファッション誌「Arena Homme +」は、ADが変わって以前よりアートよりになった。（「ARENA HOMME +」Winter/spring 07-08）

他誌とは違う！フランスのファッション・カルチャー誌「WAD」。（「WAD」#34）

今回、これらの140誌を集めてみて、海外雑誌の傾向で何か気づかれたことはありますか？

雑誌における、クリエイティブ・ディレクターという肩書きの存在が最近ではより重要になってきていると思います。編集長、クリエイティブ・ディレクター、ファッション誌ならファッション・エディターが入り、その3人が主軸になっている最近の様子を見ると、雑誌の作り方自体が変わってきているんじゃないかと思います。

日本の雑誌では「クリエイティブ・ディレクター」というクレジットをあまり見かけませんが、雑誌でいうアート・ディレクターとクリエイティブ・ディレクターの違いとは一体何でしょう？

アート・ディレクターは、雑誌全体のヴィジュアル的な部分をディレクションしていると思うのですが、その反面、クリエイティブ・ディレクターはビジュアルだけでなく「雑誌を作る」という部分に関わっているんじゃないでしょうか。ウェブマガジンなどが増えてきている中で、雑誌だからこそのクリエイションがより重要で、必要になってきているのだと思います。

ちなみに、現在の日本の雑誌のシーンに関してはどう思われますか？

僕は、作り手の顔が見えるような雑誌に魅力を感じるのですが、現在は残念ながらそういう雑誌は少ない気がします。日本の場合は「売らなきゃ」とか「伝えなきゃ」という部分を考えすぎているのかもしれません。日本のマーケットではビジネスとクリエイションとのバランスがとても難しいですよね。

海外雑誌は作り手の自己満足度が高い分、それが逆に良い個性になっている感じはありますね。では、この質問は以前、「We Love Magazines」のジェレミー・レスリーさんにも伺ったのですが、雑誌の未来はどうなってゆくと思われますか？

本書の中でも色々な編集長達に同じ質問を投げかけてみたんですが、多くの人が雑誌を作りたくて作っていて、インターネットをあまり恐れていないんです。それに、雑誌は誰にでも作れますが、優秀なフォトグラファーやコントリビューター達に参加してもらうことは誰にでも出来ることではない。ですから、クオリティの高い雑誌は生き残っていくと思いますよ。ただ、情報誌はネットの方が便利なので、確実に減っていくでしょうね。

では最後に、日本で雑誌に関わる蜂賀さんから見て、海外雑誌の魅力とは何でしょう？

見た感じにとても楽しそうに作られていること、アルファベットということもあるのでしょうが、デザインや写真などビジュアル的に面白いものが多い。本屋でパラパラと海外雑誌を見た時に、「カッコイイ」「キレイ」というワクワク感を与えてくれるもの。サイズ、紙質、インクの香り、見たことのない写真、見たことのないタイポグラフィ…。海外雑誌はとても贅沢なビジュアルペーパーになっていると思いますし、色々な人の知識と経験とテクニック、そしてクリエイティブなものが沢山詰まったものでもありますね。
