遊び心溢れる動物の家紋

皆さんは、日本にどのくらいの家紋があるかご存知だろうか？驚くことに、その数はなんと、およそ2万点にも及ぶそうだ。葵や菊、月や星などをモチーフにしたシンボリックなデザインは、今でも、その歴史を感じさせないほど新鮮に映る。今回PingMagは皆さんに、数多くのある家紋の中から、ユニークでバラエティにとんだ動物の家紋を紹介します！

家紋は元々、家のシンボルマークではなく、身分を表わすものとして、主に貴族の間で使用されていたようだ。その後、時代の流れと共に家紋の使われ方も変わり、ある時は武家の権威の象徴、またある時は歌舞伎役者のトレードマークとして利用されていた。現在では、昔ほど家紋を目にすることはなくなったが、結婚式で着用する紋付袴やお祭りの法被などでその絵を見ることができる。

家紋の絵は、中国の陶器に描かれた模様や花など身近なものが原型になっている。初めは細かな線で写実的に描かれていた家紋だが、後には、抽象的に描かれる事が多くなり、紋に丸の囲いが付けられるなど、徐々にシンボル化されたスタイルへと変化していった。

動物の家紋には、それぞれに縁起の良い意味が含まれている。例えば、「鶴は千年、亀は万年」と言われるように、「鶴」と「亀」には長寿の意味がある。同じく「エビ」も、長いヒゲや腰を曲げたようなその見た目が、老人のようだということから、長寿のシンボルマークとされている。そして「ハマグリ」は、貝と貝のぴったり合わさった様子が、夫婦の仲を良くすると見なされ、その姿が紋章化されたらしい…。

「鷹の羽」は、戦国武将達にとても人気のあった家紋。江戸時代では、120家の大名旗本がその家紋を用いていたらしい。しかし、何故か羽だけが家紋に描かれ、鷹そのものの絵は存在しない。他にも武家の家紋には、独特の鳴き声が良い知らせを呼ぶと言われる「雁（かり）」の家紋などが使われていたようだ。

日本で最もポピュラーな家紋は、梅や銀杏などの植物で、動物を目にすることは珍しい。しかし、その中でも「蝶」だけは多くの家紋に用いられている。また、「アゲハ蝶」は平家の代表紋としても有名で、今でも提灯などに使われている。この空を優雅に舞うように描かれた「蝶紋」の美しさは、当時の女性達にとても好まれていたようだ。

日本人にとって親しみのある「カニ」は、まるでイラストのように独特に描かれている。隣は、水辺に生息する小さな鳥の「千鳥（ちどり）」。「千鳥」は、小型の鳥を総称した呼び名。その丸みを帯びた身体に小さなクチバシと足が付いた姿が愛らしい。もしかすると、あの名菓ひよこ饅頭は、この千鳥がモデルなのだろうか…！？

家紋の中には、百獣の王と言われている「獅子」や伝説の生き物とされる「鳳凰」「龍」など、珍しい絵も存在する。細かな線で描かれたこれらの家紋は、蒔絵などには描かれていたが、一般的にはあまり用いられなかったようだ。
