パラモデル：レールで描くグラフィティ

床、壁、天井に、まるで木の根のようにびっしりと張り巡らされた青い線。近くによって見てみると、それは昔電車ごっこに使った青いプラスチックレール！そんな昔なつかしのアイテムを使って、ギャラリーのホワイトウォールはもちろんのこと、町工場の床、温泉、はたまた池の水面に至るまで、平面とあらばどこでも青いレールを敷き詰めてしまう、キャンバスを選ばない、異色のグラフィティ。レール脇には、山があり、駅があり、山羊もいて、ギャラリーの平面空間に、線路にそった小さなジオラマ世界が出現する。そんな型破りな3Dグラフィティを展開する関西デュオ、パラモデルのお2人、林泰彦さんと中野裕介さんにお話を聞いた。

今回、パラモデルを訪ねた時、2人は横浜のBankART Studio NYKで行われている「都市との対話」展の展示作業の真っ最中。開催を間近に控え、これだけのパーツを組み立てるの、間に合うんですか～？

間に合いますかね～？今回は今までのものより比較的小規模なんで楽なんですけど…。でも開催日に間に合わなかった時は、最近「公開制作」というのを覚えまして。作っている作業風景も見てもらおうかな、と（笑）。トミーさん（協力：株式会社タカラトミー）にこのプラレールをご協力いただいてるんですけど、なんせトラックで運ばれてくる量なんで、いったいパーツを何個使ってるのか、検討もつきません。

「パラモデル」というグループ名は、プラモデルをもじったものなんでしょうか？

もともと2人で最初はパラパラ漫画を作って、アニメーションを作ってたんですよ。他にもいろいろ作品は作っていたんですが、2人でやっていこうか、と考えた時に、それまでの作品で全て「パラ」でくくれるなぁ、と思って。作品はいろんで意味で「パラドックス」だったり、二人でやってるから「パラレル」だったり。あと、このプラレールを使った作品も、基本的に子供の頃にやってた模型とか、ジオラマ遊び、ゴッコ遊びの延長線なんですよ。ほら、子供2人が一緒に地面に落書きしてる時に、もう1人の落書きと自分の落書きを組み合わせて遊んでるような。そういう意味で遊びに興じてる一種の「パラダイス」状態とも言えるし。まあそんな2人のいろんなイメージのパーツを、プラモデルみたいに組み立てていく、というニュアンスも含めて、「パラモデル」としました。

本当に色々な所で作品を作っていらっしゃいますが、この一見、都市の夜景みたいに見える作品は、どこで作られたんですか？

これはうち（林さん）の実家、東大阪の町工場の中に組み立てたんですよ。この写真では明るく見えますけど、本当はもんのすごい真っ暗なんです。オモチャの電車にライトを積んで、レールの上を走らせて、2時間の長時間露光でこういった写真を作りました。

この岡崎美術博物館での作品は、ずっと美術館の中の展示をお客さん達がみてきて、最後に外にでると、池の上にまでこのプラレール作品が続いている、という設定です。プラレールと人工芝を使ったんですが、池に浮いている状態です。けっこうこれは大掛かりでしたねぇ。

あの、大家さん自ら増築に増築を重ねた迷宮のようなマンション、沢田マンションでも作品を作ったそうですね。どんどん増築していくあたりが、すごくパラモデルの作品と似てますよね。

でももともと特に沢田マンションで作品を作る予定はなかったんです。たまたま展示で近くまで行った時に、以前テレビで見たことのある、沢田マンションに立ち寄りました。見てみたら本当に面白くて、それで大家さんにちょっと作ってみたいんですけど、といったら快諾してくれました。それで屋上で作品作りです。マンションの住人や子供達も手伝ってくれました。

子供達といえば、ワークショップで各方面から引っ張りだこだそうですね！楽しそう！

学校の体育館とかでやらせてもらったりしていますが、大勢の手でどんどん作られるレールを、定点撮影しています。ムービーと写真もとっていて、この写真は、実は微妙にいろいろと合成しているんですよ。よ～く見ると同じ人が一枚の写真の中に数人いたり、プラレールも画像上で組み立てたりしてます。

この「極楽百景」の「新世界」シリーズは、また意外な場所での展開ですね…。

新世界って、大阪の通天閣のふもとにあるおっちゃんたちの町なんですけどね。この極楽シリーズの極楽って、たとえば温泉に入って「はぁ～極楽」っていう、「パラダイス」な風景を作った写真作品シリーズです。八重勝の方は、大阪にはいっぱいある串カツ屋さんで、トミーさんが出してるミニカー、「トミカ」が串揚げされて出されるっていうものです。あとトミカに寿司ネタが乗って出てくる「トミ寿司」なんてのもあって。楽しいでしょ？

今パラモデルは、新しいオモチャを開発中だそう。パラモデルが作るオモチャとは！？どんなオモチャができるか、楽しみ。

今回このBankART Studio NYKで行われている「都市との対話」展を企画したのは、注目の若手キュレーター橋本誠氏。ご自身初の企画展にしてBankART Studioで大々的な展示を実現させた超敏腕キュレーター。彼から見たパラモデルとは？

まずこの企画は、どうも最近「都市」をテーマにした作品が多いな、と感じた所からはじまりました。私達の生活とは切っても切れない存在である都市、その風景やそこに住む人々と都市との関係性など、非常に深いテーマを、日本の若手作家達がどう切取るのか、非常に面白い展示になったと思います。パラモデルの作品は、もちろん作品としてのビジュアルインパクトはもちろんの事、一見無機質に見えて、実は非常に手の込んだ作業を経ている、それは都市という存在にも同じく当てはまるもので、インパクトとは裏腹にとても奥深い作品だと思います。彼らの作品は、今回の企画にとても面白い一石を投じてくれていますね。

この「都市との対話」展ではパラモデルの他にも、数千枚単位の都市の写真を組みあわせて摩訶不思議なマップを作り上げる西野壮平さんの作品など、日本の若手作家の作品が紹介された。

そして、益々グラフィティの場を広げるパラモデルの二人。今度は初の海外進出！で9月25日から北京と広州で行われる「美麗新世界:当代日本視覚文化」展に出展するそう。彼らのパラダイスな作品はどこまでも増殖中！だ。
