工事中の新宿駅構内に、ユニークな文字で表示された道案内。近づいてみると、それはなんとガムテープで作られた文字だった。警備員の佐藤修悦（さとう・しゅうえつ）さんにまつわるドキュメンタリー・フィルム「新宿駅案内のガムテープ・フォント」は、一人の好奇心溢れる若者によってその才能を見出された普通のおじさんのストーリー。今日は、そのおじさんにアプローチを試みて、素晴らしいドキュメンタリーを製作したトリオフォーの山下陽光さんにお話を伺いながら、佐藤修悦さんのユニークな作品の数々をご覧頂きたい。

トリオフォーはお笑いパフォーマンスや映像制作など、気になる事があれば何でも追求する若者7人が集結したグループ。そんなトリオフォーの山下さんがJR新宿駅の構内に大きく描かれた案内の文字に注目したのは、2003年の冬だった。
「何度か見て、気にはなっていたんですよ。本当なら文字なんて伝わればいいじゃないですか、なのにやたら完成度が高い。しかも、何かのきっかけで間近で見たら、なんと文字がガムテープで出来ているんです！丁度その頃、トリオフォーで映像制作の計画があって、ガムテープの文字のことを仲間に話したら、“それだ！”って盛り上がって、このドキュメンタリーを作ることになったんですよ。それで、少しでも多くの人に見て貰う為に、YouTubeのインフラを利用して、そこではまだ誰も表現していない事をやろうということになったんです。」（山下さん）
山下さんは、会う人会う人にこの道案内の話をしたり、インターネットで呼びかけたりなどして、様々な方法でその製作者を探していた。するとある日、「今あの文字を作っている人が、新宿駅で実演しているよ」との連絡が。直ぐさま駅に駆けつけると、そこにいたのは警備員の佐藤修悦さんだった。
「佐藤さんがつれなかった記憶がありますね。“面倒くさい奴が来たと思った”って後で言ってました（笑）。それから2回目に会った時にインタビューと僕らのライブの出演を頼んでみたら、快く引き受けて下さったんです。」（山下さん）

元々、この道案内は人々が工事中の通路をスムーズに歩けるようにという目的で、警備員のリーダーである佐藤さんの独断で作られた。手始めに、ブラットホームの番号表示を貼付けてみたところ、予想以上に評判が良く、道案内図も作るようにと駅員から指示を受けたそうだ。そんな佐藤さんだが、数十年前に上京して最初に就いた職業は、なんと意外にも銀行員。その後は転職し、壁新聞のゴシック体のレタリングを担当していたが、ガムテープで文字を作るのは今回が初めてのことだったのだとか。
「第三者が祭り上げたり、もしくは誰かに評価してもらいたくて何かを作っている人は多いんですけど、佐藤さんの場合は違っていたんです。ただそこには人々の安全確保のため、分かりやすくという気持ちだけが込められてる。純度が異常に高いなって思いましたし、そこに凄みを感じます。」（山下さん）

展示会に置かれているエントランスの看板も佐藤さんのお手製。
佐藤さんは文字をゴシック体にすることにこだわりを持っている。きっかけは高校生の頃。自分の字にコンプレックスを持っていた佐藤さんは、授業の中でゴシック体の書き方をマスターしたことでコンプレックスを払拭し、それ以来、全てをゴシック体で書いている。しかし、現在佐藤さんの作り出す文字は、所々がアールになっていて、その特徴的な形は佐藤さんの独自のスタイルだ。
「谷」という文字が、こんなにもユニークな形に！
通路にも佐藤さんの文字。最近、巷ではこの書体を「修悦体」と呼ぶらしい。
「今迄にも色々な人にインタビューを行いましたが、考えを持たずにものを作っている人が結構多かったんですよ。けれど佐藤さんに文字を丸くしている理由を聞くと、“丸い方が混雑した駅にいる人々の気持ちを和らげてくれる”という答えが返ってくるんです。考えを持って作っているところが、また素晴らしいと思うんですよね。佐藤さんの文字は手作業ということもあり、均等じゃないんですよ。一見、何かのフォントに見えますが、一つ一つ微妙に違うんです。でも印刷された文字のように100％完璧ではないところに親しみを覚えるし、読み安さの秘訣なのかなって感じます。また、完成に向かう途中だから面白いんじゃないのかなとも思いますね。」（山下さん）

次は文字にするガムテープを貼付ける。
そして、カッティング作業。文字の端をカープに切り取る佐藤さん。
あっという間に最終段階。枠のテープをはがす作業。ここ迄の時間はわずか15分程度。
現在、高円寺の古着屋「素人の乱」では、トリオフォーがプロデュースする佐藤さんの初の個展が開催されている。初日の佐藤さんの実演では、「未完成」という文字が作られた。この文字はトリオフォーのリクエストで、そこには未完成を完成にするという想いも含まれているのだとか。
今の若者には未来が感じられないと言う声をよく聞くが、今回トリオフォーに出会い、彼らの言葉を聞いて、その考えや視点に感心させられた。作品というのは評価してくれる人が存在して、そしてその人たちの見せ方次第で初めてその輝きを増すものだ。小さな好奇心から一人のおじさんの才能を見出し、素晴らしいドキュメンタリーを作り上げたトリオフォーさんに私達は拍手を送りたい。

A few weeks ago my family and I went on vacation and had to rent a car. When at the car rental counter we were asked if we wanted to buy one day car insurance. Not knowing what 1 day car insurance was at the time time we figured we better be safe then sorry. So of course we did.
