アーティスト達に愛されるトーキョー・イーストサイド

東京の東側、墨田区向島の芸者さん達が持つ小さな名刺。

ニューヨークのソーホーやロンドンのイーストエンド、ベルリンのミッテ地区など、世界の都市の下町の多くはアートと密接な繋がり持っている。しかし、皆さんは東京の東側にも、少なからずそのようなシーンが存在していることをご存知だろうか？東京都墨田区の向島・京島地区では、私達がよく目にする超高層ビルや巨大スクリーン、ファッション雑誌から飛び出してきたような若者達の集団を見ることはない。しかし、そこには老朽化する家屋をリフォームし、ギャラリーやカフェを開き、自分のペースで作品を作り、暮らす人々がいる。今日は、東京の東側を歩きながら、沢山のアーティスト達に愛されてやまないその街の魅力を探ってみたい。

東向島駅から徒歩8分、向島百花園で見つけたすいれん。中には真っ赤な金魚の姿も。

渋谷から半蔵門線に乗って約30分。隅田川を越えて、押上駅、さらにその先の曳舟駅、東向島駅の辺りで下車すると、まず初めに気づくのはその空の色だろう。高層ビルとは無縁の古い家屋が並ぶこの辺りでは、天気の良い日ならその青さに圧倒される程だ。ここも徐々に再開発が進められてはいるものの、10分も歩けば今が2007年だという事実をすっかり忘れてしまうに違いない。

この辺りには古い木造とトタンの家屋が多く見られる。

窓の作りから察するにかなり古そうな家。入口は見当たらないが、人が住んでいるのは確実だ。

幅1メートル程の路地が多く、迷路のようになっているのもこの地区の特徴。

この辺りを歩いていて感じることのひとつは、町工場の多さ。渋谷や新宿辺りでは見ることのない小さな工場が、今でも多く点在している。これらの工場で作られた小さなパーツは、別の工場の違うパーツと組み合わせられることが多いため、自分の作ったパーツを乗せた台車をゴロゴロと押しながら歩くおじいさんの姿を見かけることも少なくない。

京島3丁目で見つけた建物の中には、玄関のすぐそばに何かの大きな機械が見える。

向島・京島は、今でも「長屋」が多く残る場所としても知られている。長屋は数戸の家を連ねて一棟にした集合住宅で、一軒家が非常に高価だった江戸時代には、町人の殆どは裏町の長屋に住んでいたという。そして、そんな長屋と現代のアーティストの素敵な関係をよく表しているのが、東向島にある「フルハウス」だろう。

フルハウスの入口は、昔の染物屋当時のまま。オーナーである古橋さんは、突然訪れた私達を快く迎えてくれた。

フルハウスは、アーティストである古橋さんが長屋を改築し使用している築85年〜100年ほどの住居兼イベントスペース。情報発信基地でもあるこの場所では、向島のまちづくりやアートな活動について話を聞くことができる。

イベントスペースとしても使われる1階は、古さを活かした落ち着いたスペース。

この辺りにはフルハウス以外にも、昔の工場を改築しギャラリー・スペースにした「現代美術製作所」、昭和2年（1927年）の家屋を活かしたギャラリーカフェ「こぐま」、古いアパートを利用し、スパイスたっぷりのカレーとアートを提供する空間「スパイス・カフェ」などがある。これらの場所は全て、ただ古い建物を取り壊してしまうのではなく、その古さを活かす改築方法をとっているため、生まれ変わったスペースには、初めてそこを訪れる人をも包み込むような優しい木の温もりがある。

築80年の家屋を改装したギャラリーカフェ「こぐま」は、曳舟駅から徒歩9分。鳩の街商店街に位置する。

スパイス・カフェのご近所にあるカフェ&ギャラリー「天真庵」に立ち寄り、オーナーの野村さんにお店オープンのきっかけについてお話を聞いてみた。

「僕は元々池袋に住んでいたのですが、ある時、この辺りにアトリエを持っている升たかさんというアーティストとスパイス・カフェに行ったんです。その時にこの物件を見て、ここだったら昔の上海のカフェみたいなものが出来るんじゃないかって話になったのがきっかけなんですよ。」（野村さん）

取材中に天真庵でお食事をしていたお客さんは、近所に住んでいるという常連さん。元々この辺りの出身だそうで、この街の魅力は？と尋ねると、迷うことなく「昔の景色が今でも残っていることですね」と微笑んでいた。

曳舟駅から鳩の街商店街の方へ歩き、さらにそこから隅田川の方に向かう途中の向島2丁目、5丁目付近は、料亭街として知られている。実は向島は、新橋、赤坂、神楽坂、芳町、浅草と並んで東京の六花街のひとつ。墨堤通りと国道6号の中間を南北に通る「見番（けんばん）通り」の辺りでは、夕方5時くらいになるとお座敷に向かう芸者さんの姿を見ることが出来る。

向島・見番通りにある京小物店「まねき屋」を訪れていた芸者の舞さん。これからお座敷に向かうのだそう。

2011年には、610メートルの高さの新東京タワーが完成する予定の墨田区。これから、沢山の注目を集めるだろうこの東のエリアは、4年後にはその姿を変えてしまっているのかもしれない。しかし、アートという力がこの街をさらに活性化することができたら、4年後の今日も現在の街並を少しでも多く目にすることが出来るのではないだろうか。
