シーホープ: LEDできらめいて

時計は時間を表示するためのものだなんて、一体誰が言ったんだろう？私たちが欲しいのは、「ナイトライダー」みたいに暗闇でピカピカ光るモノ！最近では、LEDはインゴ・マウラーのテーブルや銀座のシャネルビルのように、クラブの内装やアート風デザインにお洒落にフィーチャーされている。小型で可能性は無限大、そしてきらびやかなLEDは、手首に装着するのにも最高！そこで登場するのが日本発のデザイン会社、シーホープ。シーホープの時計からは伝統的な針が消え、時刻はアート色豊かに組み込まれたLED、LCD、またはアナログのデザインで表示される。今何時かを知るには、まずそのデザインを解読しなければならない。PingMagは革新的な商品を次々と生み出すシーホープ代表、木村康さんからお話を聞くため横浜へと足を運んだ。

腕時計を作り始めたのはいつ、どんなきっかけだったのですか？

SEGAに勤務していた頃、3年間ロンドンに住んでいたことがあるんです。そこである日、小さなお店でギターの形をした腕時計を見つけたて、結局部品についてメーカーに問いあわせることになったのです。それから、昔からある針を使わずに時刻を表現するというコンセプトで、自分で時計をデザインしたいと思うようになって、1997年に始めました。それから10年経ちましたが、今では会社も国際企業に発展しています。

初代の時計はどのようなものでしたか？

最初に作ったのはアナログ腕時計の「EleeNo 001」で、LEDの時計としては赤、緑と黄色のLEDを使ったPimp1が最初でした。その頃はLEDを使用した製品の80%くらいが赤、緑と黄色を使ったもので、青と白のLEDはまだ出はじめた程度でした。そういうわけで、Pimpの次モデルには青と白のLEDを採用したんです。これは大成功でした。

それはそうでしょう！LEDに興味がない人なんているんでしょうか？木村さんご自身はどのような点に魅かれたのですか？

単純にいえば、みんな明かりや光るものが好きなのですよ。あらゆるアクセサリーにアクセントをつけてくれるから。日が暮れるのが早い日本では特にそうだと思います。たとえば、携帯時計は今や日常生活に欠かせないものとなっていますが、ユニークで使いやすいディスプレイを目指して高度にデザインされたものになってきたでしょう。腕時計もまたアクセサリーであり、LEDの発光体はみんなが好きな光をくれるものなのだと思います。光は夜に見られる小さな昆虫、夜光虫のようなもの。小さくて魅力的な輝きなのです。

光る虫！アナログとLEDではどちらにより魅力を感じますか？

複雑なデザインとシンプルなものとの間で、どちらにも決めがたい魅力を感じています。人々はみんな最新技術が大好きだけれど、同時にシンプルなものも求めているのです。腕時計の市場は流行にとても敏感なのだけれど、流行はいつも変化していて、市場の流れはこのところまたアナログに戻ってきているように感じます。LEDウォッチは10年ぐらいごとに人気のピークがあるのですが、売上へのプレッシャーは感じます。僕の時計の市場はとても小さいのですが、はっきり言うとアナログウォッチのほうが、作って売るのも簡単です。ただし、僕は針を使わないという独自の方法でアナログウォッチを作っていきたいのです。

ステレオのイコライザーやラジオ・アクティブモデル、それからミリタリー調のSCOPEなど、腕時計をデザインするヒントはどこから得るのですか？

僕はいつでも身の回りにあるアイテムについて考えていて、それをインタラクティブな腕時計にアレンジする方法に思いを巡らせているのです。アイデアはときには携帯電話や車のライティングやインターフェースのデザインから浮かんできたり、映画やテレビのコマーシャルから何かを見つけたりすることもあります。たとえば、Scopeのアイデアは僕が見たあるSF映画を元にしたものです。サーチ中に短いイルミネーションを表示して、それから2本の線が時間を表示するようになっています。Scopeは人々が求めるものをうまく表現していると思いますが、現在は新たなLCD技術を使用したScope 2を開発中です。

すると、時計を作ることは新技術とも関連したことなのですか…

僕たちは時計作りに使える新しい技術を常に探求しています。人々はより新しいものを求めるから、僕たちも生き残るためには常に先回り、先取りをしなくてはいけないのです。セイコーやカシオなどの大手時計メーカーとは勝負にならないけれど、挑戦することはできます。僕の時計が他とはだいぶ違ったものになっているのもこの結果なのです。例えば、LCDを使うというアイデアはカーオーディオのディスプレイから得たものです。より細かいグラフィックを表示しながら、時刻もつねに示されています。LEDのタイプでは、ボタンを押したときに時刻を表示するしくみになっているのですが。新しいScopeのディスプレイにも、Alien DNAモデルと同様にLCDを使う予定です。このアイデアもSF映画から来たものです。

内側からも、木村さんの時計は複雑な構造をしているように見えます。LEDやLCDを使ってデザインするときの課題にはどんなものがありますか？

スペースの面で制約がかかります。バッテリーだとかライトのグリッドなどの部品を限られた場所に収めなくてはいけないという意味で、エンジニアになったような気分ですね。一方、デザイナーとしての視点からはより大きな、より幅のあるものを作りたいという時もあるのですが、サイズや容量のうえである程度の基準には従うようにしています。デザインしたものを作ることが全く出来ないこともあるのですよ。テクノロジーが僕がやりたいと思うことの前に立ちはだかることもあるので、どこかで折り合いをつける方法を常に探しているという訳です。

こうなると、細かいことを全部知りたくなりました。お洒落な時計を作るプロセスはどうなっているのですか？

LEDウォッチの制作には平均して1年から2年かかります。一方、アナログの場合は5ヶ月ほどでできます。最初に僕がスケッチブックに思いつくものを何でもかんでも描きだしていって、何をしたいのかコンセプトを作ります。次に、それをコンピュータに取り込みます。その後のいくつかの段階については残念ながらお話できません。それから、いくつかダミーを作りながらデザインを改善したり素材を変えたりという作業を繰り返します。そうしてやっと製品につながるというわけです。

面白いですね！未来の時計はどのようなものになるでしょう？

現在、新しい製品ラインを作っている最中なのです。LCDの他に携帯電話のように充電可能な腕時計を開発しています。使用して電池が切れたら使っていない時に充電するというわけです。プロトタイプは残念ながらまだお見せできないのですが。次にリリースするアナログモデルはこちら「Jekyll and Hyde」です。

Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
