おかしなスイカ

スイカ畑に現れた「人面スイカ」。どことなく、うちのご近所さんに似ている…。

日本の夏の光景に欠かすことのできないスイカ。「みんな、スイカよ〜！」「はーい！」…そこでアナタが想像するのは、間違いなく大きくて丸い形のスイカだろう。しかし！その常識が覆される日がやって来た。今やスイカは丸じゃないのが当たり前！？今日は、日本の夏の風物詩とも言える（？）奇妙な形のスイカを紹介します！

そもそもこの不思議なスイカの登場は、約20年も前に香川県の農家が栽培した「四角スイカ」が発端となっている。現在ではおかしなスイカの代表格として知られている四角スイカだが、当初は冷蔵庫にスッキリと収めることが目的だったそう（日本人って本当に几帳面！）。しかし、残念ながら甘さに欠けるため、主に観賞用として販売されている。

生産量はワンシーズンで800〜1000個程度と少なめなので、当然、お値段も1個につき1万2000円とスイカとしてはなかなかもの。しかし、その珍しい形故に世界中から問い合わせが殺到！ヨーロッパや香港のメディアでも取り上げられただけでなく、アジア某国の大統領やシリアの高官の方からの発送依頼があったりと、今や日本の四角スイカは地球規模でその存在を知られるまでになった。

最近ではすっかりお馴染みの四角スイカ（左）と、そこからさらに進化したサイコロ型のスイカ（右）。今年の夏は、ビーチで「すごろく」でもいかが？

店頭に並ぶ様々なスイカ。

丸、四角…とくれば、次は当然…？そう！「四角スイカ」に続いて登場したのは、三角の形をした北海道の「ピラミッドスイカ」。こちらは「四角スイカ」に比べて栽培法が大変難しいため、年に5個〜10個程度と生産個数もかなり少ない。その理由から、スイカ1個の値段は、な、な、なんと8万円！！

しかし、この奇妙なスイカ現象は留まることを知らず、遂に福岡県から人の顔をした「人面スイカ」が登場！一体誰をイメージして栽培されたのかは定かではないが、その穏やかな笑顔に見ている側も挨拶せずにはいられない。ちなみに、こちらも基本的にはインテリアとして作られているので、味の保証は出来ないらしいが、購入するのは飲食店関係が殆どなのだそう。


思わず「こんにちは」と声をかけたくなる「人面スイカ」。

このスイカに感情がないとはとても思えない…。お値段は5万円〜8万円。

ところで、一体これらの奇妙なスイカはどのように作られているのだろうか？四角スイカやピラミッド・スイカなどを取り扱っている静岡県津市の果物販売店「果物の郷おくむら」のスタッフ、奥村さんに話を聞いてみた。

「栽培特許の関係で作り方を具体的に話すことは出来ませんが、簡単に言えば鋳型に金属を流し込むように、型枠を作ってその中に肥大前のスイカを入れ、そこで成長させるのです。四角スイカ、ピラミッドスイカ、人面スイカ共全て同じ方法が用いられます。但し、ご覧のように人面スイカにはハッキリとした凹凸があり、その部分については秘密のようです。」（奥村さん）

では、こんな奇妙な形があるのはスイカだけ？と思いきや、やはり他にもありました！「カクメロ」は、渥美農業高校の生徒が考案し作り出した四角いメロン。観賞用のスイカとは異なり、味も甘くて絶品なのだとか。ちなみに、お値段は1個1万5000円。

「高校生の発案で始まって、今では農協まで巻き込み、栽培特許と「カクメロ」という商標まで取っています。さらに、同じ地域の工業高校、商業高校の皆さんにも協力を頂いているとの事です。このカクメロの実物は7月上旬に当店に並びます。」（奥村さん）

そして最後にもうひとつ。JRちばみどり旭胡瓜部会が生産する「ハート・スティック」と「七夕祭り・スター・スティック」は、ハートや星の形をしたキュウリ！

気になるお値段の方は1本258円と普通よりはやや高めだが、みずみずしくて歯ごたえも良い。では、最後にこのハート型と星型のキュウリを使って、一品。
