トレンドウォッチ：これが噂のニューレイブ？

昨年イギリスで誕生し、今やその勢いはヨーロッパ各地やアメリカまで飛び火した気配のストリート・カルチャー・ムーブメント「ニューレイブ」（New Rave / Nu Rave）。4ヶ月前にロンドンからやって来た友人にその言葉を聞いた時は、「それってどういうレイブ…？」なんて、マヌケな質問をした私だが、最近ではここ東京でもその到来を感じずにはいられない！「ニューレイブは既に終わった」と述べる一部UKメディアもあるけれど、先日発表されたロンドン・オリンピックのロゴがあまりにもニューレイブだった為、イギリス国民は2012年までこの現象につき合うことを余儀なくされた…。ともあれ、今日は徐々に東京をも襲うこのニューレイブ・ムーブメントについて勉強してみよう。

ひとつのカルチャー・ムーブメントが生まれる時、そこには必ず名付け親が存在する。音楽が先行して起こった「ニューレイブ」の場合は、まぎれもない英音楽誌のNME。なんとなく予想がつくように、80年代にブレイクした「ニューウェイブ」をもじりつつ、「新しいレイブ」という意味でこの名前が付けられたそう。

80’sを彷彿させるシンセ・サウンド

ニューレイブの代表格的なバンドと言えば、英ノッティンガム出身のクラクソンズ。今夏、来日する予定の彼らは、数々のメディアに「Next Big Thing（次の大物）」と騒がれているほど。他にも、同じく英出身のニュー・ヤング・ポニー・クラブ、グラスゴーのシットディスコ、ブラジルのCSS、ドイツのデジタリズムなど、世界中から新しいニューレイブ系のバンドが次々と登場している。

そのサウンドはというと…80年代の音楽に影響を受けた「エレクトロ・ロック」や「ディスコ・パンク」という呼び方をすればピンと来るだろうか？もちろん、数年前に大ブームを起こしたエレクトロ・クラッシュとの繋がりも無視できない。しかし、ニューレイブは、エレクトロ・クラッシュよりロック色が強いのが特徴と言える。

ちなみに、最近のイギリスでは、ニューレイブの大流行により「DJよりもバンドがクール」という風潮があるのだとか。ターンテーブルを投げ出してギターを手にする若者が続出しているという噂もあるが、残念ながら真実は定かではない。

ファッションは蛍光色が決め手

ニューレイブを語る上で、無視出来ないのが蛍光色のド派手なファッション。このムーブメントを先読みして、「今秋は、街中が目も覚めるような蛍光色で溢れるだろう。」と語ったファッション・ジャーナリストもいたそうだけれど、その予想はまんざら外れてもいない様子。その証拠に、ニューレイバー達が流行らせたピンクや黄色の蛍光色は、ストリートからすでに大手メゾンまでに飛び火している…！

2007年秋冬コレクションでは、マドンナの衣装も手がけるジェレミー・スコットから宇宙に飛んでいってしまいそうな柄のドレスやブルゾンが登場、優雅な雰囲気で知られるあのマルタン・マルジェラですらも蛍光色のケープやシューズなどを発表している。

そんな中で注目すべきは、ロンドン発のストリート・ブランド「カセット・プレーヤ」。その色使いやデザインは、これぞニューレイブ！という感じ。カセット・プレーヤは、2年前より原宿ラフォーレでも取り扱われているが、今では予約なしでは購入不可能な程の人気なのだとか！とにかく一見の価値ありなので、オフィシャル・サイトかMy Spaceから、目が眩むようなそのコレクションをぜひチェックしてみて欲しい。

映像までもニューレイブ？

ファッションで「蛍光色」というキーワードを生んだニューレイブは、ミュージックビデオにも奇妙な現象を引き起こした。先に述べたクラクソンズのシングル「マジック」のビデオでは、なんとメンバーの目から蛍光緑の液体が吹き出すという難解なシーンが登場。もはや、このニューレイブ現象は誰にも止められないようだ…。

ちなみに、PingMagでは、クラクソンズの一連のビデオや、ニュー・ヤング・ポニー・クラブの「アイス・クリーム」のビデオを手がけた監督のサアムとのインタビューを後日掲載予定。お楽しみに！

ニューレイブ・東京編

それでは、東京でもニューレイブ・シーンを垣間見ることが出来る場所はあるのだろうか？東京のお洒落キッズ達、心配は無用！その数は多くなかれど、確実に存在する！

不定期に行われる「Vanity」は、音楽とファッションを融合した大人気のパーティー。時折、来日中の大物バンドもシークレットで登場するこのパーティーには、チラホラとニューレイバーが出現し始めている。また、Vanityのオーガナイザーであるポール・ジェイムス率いるビビアンズは、クラクソンズがメジャーへ移籍する前のレーベルに所属するバンド。イギリスまで行ってられない！という国内のニューレイバーは要チェック。
