フリフリカンパニー：アジアに飛び立つキャラクター達

東京を拠点に活動するフリフリカンパニーは、キャラクター・デザインをべ−スに、印刷物、フィギュア、映像…と、様々な作品を手がけるマルチ・メディア制作会社。今日は、今年の7月で創立10周年目をスタートさせるフリフリカンパニーの創始者で、クリエイティブ・ディレクターでもあるテイ氏に、設立までの経緯や、今後の目標などについて話を伺った。

テイさん、まず、フリフリカンパニーについて簡単に説明して頂けますか？

フリフリは現在6人から成るチームで、僕達はキャラクターに関するものなら何でも手がけています。最近だとキャラクターが関わらないもの自体が少ないので、一言で何の会社かと説明するのは非常に難しいですね。

テイさんは、元々、多摩美で油絵を専攻されていたと伺いましたが、何故キャラクターデザインに興味を持たれたのでしょうか？

バーチャファイターを初めて大画面で見た時に、ポップアートみたいでカッコイイな、とは思っていたんですが、大学卒業後、しばらく現代美術をやりながら、気ままに暮らしていたんですよ。ところが、95年の阪神・淡路大震災で神戸の実家が倒壊してしまった。その時、突然、就職しなきゃいけないと思って、あわてて買ったフロム・エーにソニック・ザ・ヘッジホッグが載っていて、「あ！」と思ったんです。

突然の転機だったんですね。それからすぐにフリフリを？

いえ、当時はMacを使って一人で作るという時代ではなかったので、SEGAの子会社に就職しました。一年後には、同じ系列の3DCGを作る会社に移ったのですが、CGもゲームも非常に面白い時代だったので夢中で色々作っていました。しかし、完成品のテロップには自分の名前は小さくしか載らない。これじゃダメだ、と思って自らデザイン会社を設立したんです。同時にウェブサイトを作って、片っ端から「フリフリカンパニーというデザインユニットがネット上に生まれました」ってメールで連絡したところ、デザイン誌の「Design Plex」が取り上げてくれて、そこから徐々に軌道に乗り始めました。

では、最近手がけた作品をいくつか紹介して頂けますか？

まずは、昨年の12月に作ったフラッシュ・アニメーションの 「SHINOBI BLACK & WHITE」。この作品は、「Stash」というDVDシリーズの最新版にも入っています。

この作品は、1月のしずおかコンテンツバレー・フェスティバルでも上映されていたものですね。

この「FAT BEAR」は、去年11月に完成したUSBメモリーです。これは、元々、寿司USBメモリーを作っているソリッドアライアンスが知り合いで実現した商品ですが、今後はこういうものをどんどん作っていきたいなと思っています。

他にも7月の上旬に行われる台北トイフェスティバルに合わせて、「バッキー・アンド・ボッキー」というトイが発売されます。

すごい名前ですね（笑）。

3年ぶりのオリジナル・トイなので楽しんで作っています。こんなキャラが海外で受けて、外国人に「Cooool!!」と言わせたい（笑）。

トイ関係だと他にも、6月3日まで台北で開催されていた展示会に合わせて「ビル・ザ・デビル」を発表しました。この時は、少しでも注目してもらう為に団扇型のフライヤーも作りました。台北は暑いですしね…。

また、7月から毎月15秒間、10ヶ月に渡ってFoxホラーTVでフラッシュで制作したアニメーションのIDを発表する予定です。その為のキャラクターも作ったのですが、最終的にはそこからアニメーション番組を制作出来ればと思っています。

映像からフィギュアまで、本当に様々ですね。フリフリは海外でも活躍されていますけれど、日本のシーンとの違いを何か感じますか？

日本のクリエイティブ・シーンって、すごく内輪なんですよね。だから、「このデザイナーが面白いから使いたい」というのが健康的なんでしょうが、繋がりがないと仕事が来ないし、「この人が今売れているから使いたい」というセレクトが多いですよね。また、そういう人達は海外で受け入れられるかというと、そうじゃない。もっと違う視点を持ち合わせないとこれからの日本のクリエイティブは危険だと思うんですけれどね…。

近々アジアに進出すると伺ったのですが、本当でしょうか？

今月からシンガポールに一人派遣して、アジアでの土台を作るための準備室を作っている最中です。日本だけで規模を拡大していくのが、個人的にすごく危険だと思うし、怖いんですよね…。

何故、アジア進出に「シンガポール」を選ばれたのでしょう？

僕は父が中国人、母が日本人の華僑三世で、神戸の中華学校に通っていたんですが、ある時「一体自分は何人なんだ？」という疑問にぶち当たったんです。それで、自分のアイデンティティを探しに、大学卒業後にアジアを旅したんですが、帰国後に行き着いた答えは「自分は中国人でも、日本人でもない、華僑人だ」ということでした。「華僑」という土地に縛られないひとつのアイデンティティを持っていて、自分が家族と暮らしている場所が、自分のコミュニティなんです。ですから、アジアにもそういうコミュニティを作りたくて、多民族でマルチカルチャーなシンガポールを選びました。

では、今後の目標は？

フリフリアジアを軌道に乗せたいですね。お金もコネもないですが（笑）。でも本気で思っていれば、どうにかなるんじゃないかな。何かやらないと面白くないし、絶えず色々な人と喧嘩もしながら、良い物を作っていきたい。それで皆が楽しめれば、いいんじゃないかと思います。

  14. I like firefox MUCH better than IE but on certain occasions i would have a ff winfdow open and it shows the window error thing. i go back and it was firefox is already running or something s i cant use it….
