エレファントデザイン：空想生活のススメ

みなさん、年末年始のバーゲンセール、お買い物は済みましたか？それにしても世の中にはこれだけ商品が溢れているのに、これだ！とぴったりくるような商品がなかなか見つからずに探しまわること、少なくないですよね。「それなら、いっそのこと自分で作ってしまいましょう！」そんなアイディアから生まれた会社が、今回取材したエレファントデザイン。ネット上で「こんな商品が欲しい！」という声を集め、それをもとにデザイナーが商品をデザイン、そして商品化が可能なだけの欲しい！という声が集まったら、メーカーから売り出される、というシステムを提供している。単なるネットマーケティングから出来た商品と思ったら大間違い。ネットを最大限に活用したこのサービス、その名も空想生活のサイトは、さながらネット上のブレインストーミング！そこで生み出される商品は遊び心に溢れている。今は黒板として使われている、もともとは廃材だった黒いドアを背景に、エレファントデザインの西山浩平代表取締役と谷岡拡さんにお話を伺った。

西山代表：後ろは廃材だったという黒板。オフィスのあちらこちらに再活用されている廃材が自然に置かれている。

西山さん、この空想生活というサービスを始めたきっかけを教えてください。

西山さん：たとえば、ある個人がこんなものが欲しいんだけど、作ってもらえませんか？とメーカーに問い合せても、採算が取れない限り、なかなか商品化してくれませんよね。採算は取れるけれども、消費者の「本当に欲しい物」ではない商品が巷に溢れていると思います。そのように作られた商品だから、なかなか売れずメーカーの在庫は膨らみ、購入した方も安易に捨てやすく、またすぐ次の商品を求める。こうしてゴミは増え、環境にも悪影響を及ぼします。でも、インターネットを使えば、みんなが本当に欲しいと思っている商品はどんな商品なのか、またどれだけの人がそれを欲しいと思っているのかなど、広く声を集めることができる。エレファントデザインができて来年で10年になりますが、こういった考えに賛同していただける登録ユーザーさんが現在約2万人、またデザイナーの方々にも約1200名登録していただいています。さらに、メーカーサイドでも、コンセプトをよく理解頂き、また環境への配慮からも、商品化をサポートしてくれる企業が増えていて、嬉しい限りです。

「持ち運びできるあかり」取っ手をつかんでチャージャーからはずせば、コードレスにどこへでも持ち運びが可能。

そうやって商品化された商品だからこそ、なのか、デザインにもすごくこだわっている。すでに海外でもお馴染みの無印良品で売られているこの持ち運びできるあかりも実はこのシステムを使って同社のネットサイトMUJINETのコミュニティーで開発されたもの。デザインを前川淳氏が手掛けたこの商品はわずか3週間弱で商品化が決定したという。


「ぬいぐるみ君」…という名のリモートコントローラー！

こちらが構想図。なんともほほえましい。

他にも、商品化されたオモシロ商品がたくさんある。こちらはクマのぬいぐるみの形をしたリモートコントローラー。頭がスイッチで、右手がチャンネル切り替え、左手はボリュームコントローラーになっている。しかも大きさはキーホルダーのぬいぐるみサイズ。スイッチON/OFFはどうやら頭をひねるらしい…。

DeluxWashingMachine：この洗濯機は上に座ることができる。

もう1つリモコンをご紹介。こちらはすでに商品化が決定、近日発売予定の白い陶器のお皿のようなワイヤレス照明リモコンWall Type Remote Controller。手のひらサイズ、厚み約1センチで、表面のくぼみを押してスイッチON/OFFできるようになっている。付属のレシーバーを電源にさしておけば、ベッドサイドに置いて手元から部屋の調光ができたりする。

そして、斬新なデザインで目を引くこの光るドーナツ型洗濯機は、クラインダイサムアーキテクツによるデザイン。ドーナツの中を洗濯物がぐるぐる回り、しかも洗濯中は青く光る。さらに、この洗濯機はやわらかいゴム素材で出来ていて、洗濯中のバイブを感じながらマッサージチェアの様に上に座ることができる！ちなみにこの商品は現在も商品化を待っている。

同じくクラインダイサムアーキテクツがデザインを手掛けた「COMPACT IH」は、2006年グッドデザイン賞を受賞しましたね。

西山さん：嬉しいですね。イタリアって、IHヒーターがとても普及しているんですよ。そんなイタリア出身で、しかもお母さんでもあるアストリッドさんなら、きっとしっかりと生活に根ざした、しかもユーモア溢れるデザインを考えついてくれると思ったんです。カセットコンロやホットプレートは洗うのも大変だし収納にも場所をとる。いいアイディアはそういった日常の生活の中から出てきます。本当に効く薬は患者になった医者がつくる、といわれるのと一緒ですね。デザイナーが人間としての生活の中で考えついたアイディアは商品としてもユーザーの方々の共感を得ます。


子供のオモチャでいっぱいのソファも…

…このクッションピースを組み替えて遊べるその名もテトリスソファならおもちゃ要らず。

その意味では、広く一般ユーザーからの声を集めるこのシステムはとても理にかなっていますね。

西山さん：デザイナーに限らず、みんな生活のどこかでこんなの欲しいな、と思ったものを作ってると思いますよ。例えば丸めたハンガーにスーパーのゴミ袋をかけてゴミ箱にしたり（笑）。なかなか恥ずかしくて人には言えないんですけどね。そんな人々を僕達はフランケンシュタインを作った博士になぞらえてフランケンシュタイナーと呼んでいます。こんなの欲しいな、と思ってモックアップを作る、一般人であるフランケンシュタイナー達の公表される事のないアイディアを、すくい上げるのって、とても大切なんです。


空想かばん：カスタマイズたんすリュック。リュックから、引き出しが！

空想かばん：こちらは風呂敷の要領でどんなものでも包めるかばん。

今、空想生活のサイト内では、欲しいかばんをみんなで作る空想かばんというページが動いている。プロのデザイナーに混ざり、学生も参加して様々なかばんのデザインが提案されている。ぐっちゃぐちゃになりがちなかばんの中をすっきりとすべく、引き出し形にしたり、渦巻きにしたり。現在商品化が検討されているデザインもすでにいくつかある。

西山さん：今までの商品の作り方は完成するまで極秘にしていたり、その制作工程はとてもクローズドな環境の中で行われてきました。MITの著名な学者Eric von Hippel氏の著書「Democratizing Innovation」にもありますが、大勢の人とのコミュニケーションが簡単になったこれからは、アイディアは自分の中に留めておくのではなく、シェアするものへ、と変わっていくのではないでしょうか。そしてお互いに触発し合ってさらに良いアイディアが生まれる。そんな時代になるのではないかと思います。

オヤコテイブル：親と子が同じ目線で座ることができる。

谷岡さん：たくさんのデザインを見せてくれた。

この他にも学生さんのデザインで商品化が提案されているものもありますね。

谷岡さん：大人用と子供用のテーブルと椅子が一体になったオヤコテイブルは、現役武蔵野美術大学の学生でニシザワシホさんがデザインしたものですが、今実際にサイト上で商品化を提案中です。実は、昨年のデザイナーズウィークで西山社長が見かけて、ぜひ！と我々の空想生活に参加してもらったんですよ。事実、外出先で子供用の席はあまりないし、遊園地などにこれがあればいいな、などという声が集まっています。

今年のエレファントデザインが出した年賀メールには、HAPPY-TALK-YEARというフレーズが掲げてあった。一人ひとりの小さなアイディアが、みんなで話すことで大きく膨らみ、空想から現実になる。そのきっかけをつくっていきたい、という。なんと今年は空想生活の英語版もできるそうだ。

ますます広くなるTALKの輪。もっともっといろんなデザインが出てくるのを楽しみにしています！西山さん、谷岡さん、有難うございました！
