垂直庭園：有機建築アート

パトリック・ブランは、ビルの垂直な壁の持つ可能性を広げることで、美的科学の芸術を見せてくれる。といっても、フランス人の彼が作るのは、園芸展示会のためのコジャレた花とは全くかけ離れたものであり、彼の「垂直庭園」を、何らかのエコ芸術、または緑の建築と呼ぶことも出来るだろう。この独創的な有機的壁紙は、建物の内壁・外壁問わず、どこにでもそっと垂直に這うことが出来る様々な植物から成り立っているのだが、古代バビロンの釣り下がったカタチの庭が、近代的なコンクリートの建物の上にあるのを想像してみてもらうと良いかもしれない。植物学者である彼は、実は非常に科学的なバックグラウンドを持っており、1982年以降、CNRS（フランス国立科学研究センター）で植物を過激な状況に適応させる多くの方法を研究している。

12年前、パトリックはデパートや個人のリビングルーム同様、公共の空間にエコを意識した建築物を設計し始めた。パリ、イスタンブール、マドリード、ソウルの博物館、そして金沢の現代美術館でも仕事をし、こけやシダで「Girbauds’s Paris」のような店の内装を覆ってみたり、サムソンやドイツのヒューパー・ファッアインスバンクのような会社のための仕事も行い、これまでにもいくつかの展示会を開いている。来年には、グリーンの芸術で、クアラルンプールの摩天楼やカタールのドーハオフィスタワーの表面を美しく変える予定である博士が、権威あるフランスの芸術文化勲章（Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres）のような賞を幾つも受賞し、最近ロイヤル・アカデミー・オブ・アーキテクチャー（Académie d’Architecture）にて金賞を受賞したのは、全く納得である。

彼は、一時的にファッションの分野に入りこみさえし、フランス人ファッションデザイナー、ジャンポール・ゴルティエのためにデザインまでした経験を持つ。実際、2002年のゴルティエのショーで、モデルの身体の回りで味わい深くそのアイボリーのつるを巻いたそのウェディングドレス「Robe Végétale」は、大きな名声を得たものだ。

パトリック、あなたは1972年のタイへの初訪問以来、世界中の熱帯雨林（下層植物）を訪問しているそうですね。かなりの冒険かと思いますが、いかだを使って、植物が最も厳しい条件下においてどう生息するかに関する探検を行ったと伺いました。それは、どんな“いかだ”だったのでしょうか？

パトリック：森林を研究するためのキャノピーへの簡単なアクセスを提供し、文字通り森林樹の上に置く事も出来る天蓋いかだなんですよ。この天蓋いかだは飛行船にもなるんです。

実のところ、私は、未知の場所へのワイルドな探検の日々は遠い昔に終わったものだと思っていたんですが…。さて、ここで是非、パトリック流秘密の方法を教えていただけませんか？どうやって植物を壁に「貼る」んでしょう?

「垂直な庭」は3つの部品で構成されてるんです。メタル・フレーム、PVC層、そしてフェルト。メタル・フレームは、壁に掛かっているか、または立たせる事も出来ますが、非常に効率的な、熱や音を遮断したり溜めたりする空気層を提供してくれるんですよ。そして、厚さ1cmのPVCシートは、メタル・フレームにリベットで留められます。この層が、剛性を全体の構造にもたらして、防水効果も与えてくれるんですね。その後に、PVCで留められるポリアミドで作られたフェルトの層が来ますが、このフェルトは耐蝕性で、高い毛管現象は、均質の水の分配を可能にします。植物の根は、このフェルトに生えているというわけです。水やりは、栄養物が含まれた水道水を屋上から与えます。散水と受精の過程は自動化されていて、植物とメタル・フレームを含む「垂直な庭」の全体の重さは1平方メートルあたり30kgより低いんですよ。ということは、高さやサイズの制限など全く無しに、どんな壁でも実行することが出来るというわけです。

土は全く使われていないんですか？

実は、どんな状況においても、植物にとって土というのは、ただ単に整備的サポートであるだけなんですよ。光合成を行う「光」と「二酸化炭素」、それから「水」と、そこに溶けた多くの「鉱物」だけが植物に不可欠なのです。水が1年を通して入手できるところであれば、どこでも、…例えば熱帯林や地味な山の森林でも、地面から自由になった植物たちが、岩石や木の幹およびスロープなどに生えているものです。例えば、マレーシアでは、現在認識されている8000種の植物のうち2500種は、完全に土無しで成長しています。温暖な気候ゾーンでさえ、多くの植物が、崖や洞窟付近で成長したか、または岩石を割って生息しているんですよ。これらのかなり急な斜面では、多くのメギや、バラ科のシモツケ、シャリントウ種が育つことが出来るんですが、それらの自然に曲がった枝を見れば、通常それらが植えられている庭のような平坦な領域ではなく、元々は自然の中の急なビオトープから生まれた種だという事を示していますよね。このように、水の永久的な不足がない限りは、植物は、実際地面から自由になってどんな垂直な面に生息するということが可能なのです。

植物に水をまくための装置は、どのように開発したんですか？

水の配送は自動化されています。それはちょうど崖か岩石の表面のような、自然な状況と同じように屋上から行っています。

「垂直庭園」は、店、博物館のような完全エアコン装備の環境や、駐車場のような不毛の場所でも、どうして生きていけるんでしょう?

それはそれ独自の気候を作り出しているからですよ。「垂直庭園」は、付近の大気中の湿度を強めると立証されており、その結果、小さいシダ、こけの発生や、種子が発芽するのを可能にするんです。実際、店や博物館は、この実現のためには非常に適当な場所であると判明していますし、特殊な人工の光を補いはしますが、日の射さない駐車場は、日陰で生きる熱帯植物にとっては最適な場所なのです。

メンテナンスについてはどうですか？どのくらいの頻度で世話をしなければならないんでしょう？

植物の選択さえ間違っていなければ、植物を植え替える必要は全くありません！ これは普通の庭とは全く違うんですよ。年に3回か4回くらい世話をする…それで十分ですね。

緑の実験室の写真を見せてもらえなかったのは残念ですが、あなたのアシスタントであるジャン・リュック・ル・グアレックは、以前メールの中で「全世界が実験室です。植物学は、ほとんどが野外において研究されます。」と言っていました…。これは事実ですよね。では、あなたの庭の定義とはどんなものなのでしょう？まず第一にそれを芸術と見なしますか？それとも緑の建築物？

それが英語で知られているように、「垂直庭園」は、庭というよりは、生活絵か何かに近いものです。実際のところ、私はそれを「野菜の壁」を意味する「le mur vegetal」と名づけましたし。私は科学者であり、また同時に植物学者でもあります。そして、「垂直庭園」は、30年以上をかけて私が熱帯の自然な場所で行った、莫大な観測から引き出した結果に他ならないのです。…全体のシステムを設計して、それぞれの独特の位置に適当な植物種を選択するのに、私の科学的アプローチは不可欠なのです。

植物が最も厳しい状態で生き残るための方法を研究している中で、ひょっとしてそこには何か人間にも取り入れることができる部分もありますか？

そうですね…。人間は、より少ない天然資源を浪費する暮らし方を追求していくべきです。例えば下層プラントは日光の１パーセントしか受けとらないで生きているんですから。人間は、増え続ける人口を制限しようとするか、または減少させようともしなければならないとは思いますよ。…誤解しないで欲しいのですが、でも、それを熱帯林と比較してみると、実際森林の中では、植物に全く覆われない状態で多くの部分が残っているんですよ。人間は、まだ利用可能として残されているスペースの全てを使いきるべきではないと思っているということですよ。それから更に植物に関して言いたいのは、天然資源が不十分である場所ではどこでも、多様性が高く、個々の競争は低いということが言えます。…地球の資源の開発に対処するとき、人間はそれを覚えておくべきじゃないでしょうか。

こういった問題を、別の見解から見るというのもよいですね。最後にパトリックは、いくつかのお気に入りの植物を、我々の愛すべきPingMagオフィスの壁に推薦してくれました。「ナンゴクウラシマソウ、ベゴニア、それからシュスランなんかどうでしょう？」…もしかして、我らのシンプルな白い部屋を蘭ガーデンに変えようとしているでしょう、パトリック！（笑）

   全身緑色のスタイリングで、芝生職人だ！と思ったら、このお方でした～。
   日本の２１世紀美術館でも見れるみたいですね！
