世界中を踊らせる制作会社、ローガン

彼らの名前を知らない人はいるかもしれないが、彼らの作品を目にしたことがないという人はそうはいないだろう。カリフォルニアのベニス・ビーチを拠点にするまだ歴史の浅いプロダクション会社、LOGAN（ローガン）が、iPodのCM制作チームに加わり、世界中の注目を集めたのは約2年前のこと。見ているだけで踊りたくなるようなあの一連のCMシリーズは、iPodの大ヒットにも大きく貢献したはずだ。今日は、そんなLOGANの創始者であるアレクシーとベンに彼らの活動の様子や最近の作品について話を聞いてみた。

まずは、自己紹介からお願いできますか？

アレクシー・タイルビッチとベン・コナードです。5年程前に、コマーシャルとパーソナル・プロジェクトをベースにするプロダクションを始めようと思い、LOGANを設立しました。初めは僕達2人だけでしたが、現在は二つのスタジオに20人以上が在籍しています。活動の拠点は、カリフォルニアのベニスです。

お二人はLOGANの中で、どのような役割を担っているのでしょうか？

僕達はLOGANが受けた全てのプロジェクトに対して、コンセプト作りから制作に至るまでを共同でディレクションしています。また、経営の部分にも携わっています。普段は、僕達のデザイナーやアニメーター、また制作スタッフ達と非常に近い関係を保ちながらプロジェクトを進めているんですよ。

LOGANというと、以前は東南アジア的なグラフィックの印象が強かったような気がしますが、あのスタイルはどこからインスパイアされたものですか？

東南アジア的なグラフィックを思い出すというのは、僕達がLOGANとして初めて監督したマネー・マークのミュージック・ビデオ「Information Contraband」からの印象が強いんでしょうね。あれは、かなり反響のあった作品でしたから。僕達は常に様々なものに影響を受けています。僕達のポートフォリオを見れば、LOGANからひとつのテーマを言い当てることは不可能だと思いますよ。

では、LOGANの代表作はミュージックビデオやiPODのCMのような音楽と密接な関係のあるものだと思いますが、実際にオファーがあるのはどのようなプロジェクトが多いのでしょうか？

僕達が依頼される商業的なプロジェクトは、信じられないほど幅が広いんです。代理店、レコードレーベルと一緒に作っていくテレビコマーシャルやミュージックビデオのディレクション、Appleのような企業と直接やりとりするパッケージ・デザイン、環境デザイン、プロダクト・ブランディング…。僕達が手がけたプロダクト・ブランディングの分かりやすい例は、おそらくアップル・ストア銀座店のアニメーション・ディレクトリーでしょうか。

他にも、広告に関するモーション・グラフィック、アニメーション、特殊効果の仕事や、展覧会、映画祭といった商業的ではないプロジェクトもあります。数ヶ月前に作り終えたマドンナのミュージック・ビデオでは、この業界の中でも僕達の名前を全く知らなかったようなに人達に作品を見てもらえたんじゃないかと思っています。

では、一番最近の作品をいくつか紹介して頂けますか？

僕達はいつも商業的な仕事とパーソナル・プロジェクトをバランス良くこなしているんですが、現在はAppleのテレビとパッケージングのプロジェクトと、TGBデザインの石浦克さんとのBEAMSのコラボレーション企画、Liquid Frontiersのクリスチャン・ムールさんとの携帯電話サービスのプレゼンの準備などをしています。

最近終えたばかりの「Mørk&Lys」は、Mixi-Bang!という人達によってLAで行われているアート・ショーの中のプロジェクトの一つで、まっさらなToy2RのQeeを何の制約もなしに、好きなようにカスタマイズするというものでした。

そこで僕達は、オリジナルの色と素材が分かるようにだけでして、Qeeを解体し、全く違った形に作り変えることにしたんです。基本的には、新しいプロトタイプを作るような感じですね。このプロジェクトでは、ベースとなる形のデジタル化、Qeeの大きさの調整、3Dモデルのデモ版の制作、プラスチックを使っての制作、といった様々な行程を経て、最後はレーザーでカットしていきました。とは言え、この方法は複製が可能なので、今後大量生産することは考えられますね。

もうひとつのエキサイティングなものは、ゲームデザイナー小島秀夫氏と行っている、まもなく発売されるゲーム「メタルギアソリッド4」のプロジェクトです。ちなみにLOGANは、このロゴのデザインも担当したんですよ。今回は、ゲームのイントロ部分を手がけていますが、詳細は今はまだ秘密なんです…。あとは、カシオからLOGAN腕時計のデザインの話も来ています。

面白そうなプロジェクトばかりですね。LOGANとしては、得意分野はありますか？

僕達は常にデザインというものを尊重しながら、様々な手法で表現しています。コンセプト作りから映像のディレクション、デザイン、アニメーション制作、編集、サウンド…という全行程を社内で出来るようにしていますし、紙媒体、ファッション、環境デザインなどもやるんですよ。僕達は、どんなプロジェクトでも受けるように心がけているんです（ニッコリ）。クライアントにとって、なんでも揃う店のような存在でありたいと思っていますし、それが僕達のパーソナル・ワークの強い基盤になると考えています。

最初におっしゃっていたように、LOGANの作品はひとつのスタイルに捕われることはないようですね。アイディア出しの段階で、煮詰まってしまうことなどはないのでしょうか？

僕達の場合、アイディアはあまり大きな問題ではないようです。それよりも難しいのは、制作過程に発生しがちな、予算の限界、困難な制作スケジュール、締切りの変更といった問題が、クリエイティビティの妨げになることです。もちろん、それはどんなクライアントとの仕事とも発生するありきたりな問題ですが、これらの問題に対処しなければいけないという緊張感は常にあります。

今後の予定は？

長期で先を見ずに、直感的に成長していくことですね。

31. I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)
