コンテのデザイン

イギリスのKERBから届けられたオンライン・ゲーム用のコンテ

映画、テレビコマーシャル、ミュージックビデオ、ゲーム、時にはバナー広告に至るまで、一般的に「映像」や「動画」と呼ばれるものが作られる時、それが実写であろうがアニメーションであろうが、そこには多くの場合「コンテ」が存在する。コンテは、クライアントに「こんな作品になりますよ」と伝えるためだけのものではなく、作品を制作する上で道標となってくれる大切な役割を果たす。今日は、国内外のクリエイターの協力を得て、普段、私達があまり目にすることはない「コンテ」に注目してみたい。

まず初めに「コンテ」とは一体何だろう？ウィキペディアはこう説明する。「“コンテ”は、英語のコンティニュイティ (continuity) の略で、映像作品の撮影前に用意されるイラストによる表であり、映像の設計図と言えるもの。被写体のサイズ、構図、またそれらの動き、カメラ自体の動き、どのくらいの時間（尺）映すのかなど、1つのカットがどのようなものかを説明する…。」

また「コンテ」には、文字だけで書かれた「字コンテ」、クライアントに企画内容を伝えるための「企画コンテ」、そこからさらに監督の意見を取り入れ、撮影スタッフとの打ち合わせに使う「演出コンテ」、特殊効果を含む作品などに使われる「ビデオコンテ」など、様々な種類がある。

それでは、実際に使用されたコンテを見てみよう。

【テレビドラマ「ANGEL」の場合】

まずは、カリフォルニアのカルバー・シティを拠点に活動するエドウィン・ウシロ氏から届けられた、アメリカのテレビドラマ・シリーズ「ANGEL」のコンテから。ウシロ氏は、撮影監督や、アート・ディレクターとしても活躍しているが、今回はストーリーボード・アーティスト（コンテライター）としてPingMagに協力してくれた。

コンテは、作品を実際に撮影する監督によって描かれることが多い。しかし、コンテライターが描く場合は、どのようにして内容を詰めていくのだろうか？

「大抵の場合は、監督と二人で脚本を読みながら、監督が特にフォーカスを当てたい特別なシーンのメモを取り、進めていきます。この段階で、カメラ、照明、台詞、登場人物、小道具、ロケーション、雰囲気などについてまとめ、与えられた全ての情報を使って、監督と二人三脚でコンテを作ってゆくのです。監督の中には、コンテライターと一緒に自分で絵を描きたがる人もいますよ。この共同作業は、子供の頃に弟と一緒に絵を描いていたことを思い出させるので、とても面白いですね。」（エドウィン・ウシロ）

ウシロ氏の描いたコンテ（上）に沿って撮影された後、さらに別のコンテ（下）が作られる。こちらは、撮影後に加えられるデジタル／特殊効果を担当するスタッフとのやりとりに使われるのだそう。上下二つのコンテは連動しているので、ぜひ見比べて欲しい。

このドラマの完成作品はこちらでは紹介できないけれど、DVDで入手可能なので興味のある人はぜひ。

【映画祭トレーラーの場合】

次に紹介するのは、トレーラーのコンテ。イギリスの映画祭「レインダンス・フィルムフェスティバル」のトレーラーをディレクションしたのは、日本の関根光才（せきね・こうさい）監督。ブレイクダンスする小学生・ストロングマシン2号が印象的なこちらの作品は、「映画制作者の心に響く、映像作りの原点を感じられるようなものを」というコンセプトで作られたそう。ちなみに、関根監督はこのトレーラーで、カンヌ広告祭と連動して開催された「ヤング・ディレクターズ・アワード」において、グランプリと最優秀CM賞（非ヨーロッパ部門）を受賞している。

では、まずは登場人物のイメージスケッチから。

登場人物のイメージスケッチには、文字通り、監督のイメージする登場人物が描かれている。通常、この段階ではキャスティングは行われておらず、スケッチを元に出演者を探してゆくが、この作品では企画の大枠を作ったところで、主役となったストロングマシン2号が監督の頭をよぎった為、このような形になったようだ。ちなみに、これらのスケッチは全て関根監督本人によって描かれているのだとか。…可愛らしいタッチが微笑ましい。

では、次は実際のコンテ。

こちらのコンテには、コマの右端に全体の秒数（上）とそのコマの秒数（下）が書かれている。また、登場人物のセリフが吹き出しで書かれているところに、私達日本人の生活に深く根付いたマンガ文化を感じずにはいられない…。

関根監督に、絵コンテを描く際に注意している点について伺ってみた。

「僕の場合は、割と要点だけを書くようにしているつもりです。今回は、具体的な作品の内容をスタッフに伝えるための演出コンテと、ダンスシーンの撮影用のアングルのみを描いたシューティングコンテを用意しました（シューティングコンテはコチラ）。演出コンテがシンプルである理由は、詳細は直接話した方が誤解を生まないのと、ある程度の自由度をキープしたまま次のステップに移行するための僕なりの戦略です。ただし、そこでの注意点は、演出コンテがルーズになることで、事前に解決されるべき問題点が放置されてしまうことです。ですので、特にCG作業を含む場合は、演出コンテをもっと書き込むか、別途にCGチームに細かい設計図を渡します。」

それでは、完成品をご覧頂こう。この作品はコンテ上では全19カットで構成されているが、最終的なカット数は撮影時に増えている。カット数やカメラワークなどを頭に置いて見てみて欲しい。

【オンラインゲームの場合】

3番目に紹介するのは、イギリスのデジタル・マーケティング・エージェンシーKERBより届けられたディズニー・ジャパンのオンライン・ゲーム「アラジン」のコンテ。

通常、KERBがオンライン・ゲームを制作する場合は、ゲームがどのように展開するかを示した「フローチャート」を含む「スコーピング・ドキュメント」と呼ばれる書類を作るだけで、コンテを描くことは非常に少ないそう。また、ご存知のように「アラジン」は、元々存在するアニメーションなので、ここで登場するキャラクターはディズニーの実際のアニメーションから忠実にコピーされたもの。オンラインゲームというカテゴリーである為、注意するほどの激しいカメラワークもない。つまり、これはクライアントに内容を見せる為の「企画コンテ」として作られたようだ。

実際のゲームはというと、実はまだ未公開！近日公開される予定なので、もう少々お待ちを…。

【テレビCMの場合　その1】

映像、展覧会、ウェブサイト、書籍に至るまで、様々な媒体で活躍するアムステルダムのクリエイティブ集団、ケッセルスクライマーからは、オランダで放映された保険会社「Reaal」のCMが届けられた。

“保険業界における現実主義者”というコンセプトを持つこちらの会社は、「あなたの二番目の家が、一番目の家よりも大きくなる可能性は85%…」というナレーションで前回のCMのシリーズを展開。今回は、その可能性のサイズを実際のオブジェクトの大きさに反映させた作品。

このCMの制作には、プランナー、コピーライター、アート・ディレクターの3人がケッセルクライマーから関わっているそうで、大変珍しい縦書きのコンテを描いたのは、プランナーではなく、ディレクターのクリスチャン・ボーストラップ氏。

「このコンテはクライアントに自分のアイディアを納得させる為の大変重要なものですが、シューティングコンテではありません。この段階のコンテは、実際にどのように撮影するかというよりは、むしろどのようなアイディアか、ということを表現する手段と言えるでしょう。コンテで何もかも決めてしまわないことで、監督に自由に制作するスペースを残しておいた方が、最終的には良い結果に繋がるのです。」

● REAAL保険 テレビCM

【テレビCMの場合　その2】

リドリー・スコットのプロダクションRSA Filmsに所属するジョニー・ハードスタッフ監督からは、イギリスの携帯電話会社「ORANGE」のテレビCM用に描かれたラフ・スケッチから絵コンテまでの一式が届けられた。

…様々な形の器に注がれる、様々な色の液体。「良いことがずっと続くとしたら、素敵じゃないですか？」というナレーションで始まるこちらの作品は、プリペイド契約をしている携帯電話ユーザーが、翌月最高50%まで前月使用した料金を返金して貰えるというシステムのCM。シンプルなアイディアながら、途切れることなく注がれた液体の質感が非常に美しい作品。

それでは、まずは「ボード001」と名付けられたスケッチから。

このスケッチの前に「ボード000」という構図のラフ・スケッチが存在するが、こちらはそこに描かれた容器のディテールを指示するもの。上部には、「A：ジャムの瓶、B：コーヒーメーカーの入れ物、C:シャンパン・グラス…」といったかなり細かな指示が書き込まれている。この他にも背景に映る壁や、マンホールなどの素材を指示したスケッチ（ボード002）や、注がれる液体の色を細かく指示したスケッチ（ボード003）などがある。

それでは、実際のコンテを紹介しよう。

こちらのコンテの上部には「あくまで参考用」と注意書きがある。とは言え、かなり細かな説明が入っていることから、監督本人の頭の中には完成した絵が明確に見えている様子が伺える。

この他、コンテでもスケッチでもなく、液の跳ね方や垂れ方が視覚的にどのような仕上がりになるかを指示する「ビジュアル・レファレンス・ボード007」と名付けられたものが存在する。
