ジェームズ・タレルの「光の家」に泊まって

新潟県の奥地に、日本には類を見ない家屋がある。ジェームズ・タレルの「光の家」は、伝統的日本家屋の現代版だ。宿泊者は空の望める部屋などで、作家の作ったさまざまなカタチの光の体験を味わえる…

ジェームズ・タレルは、カリフォルニア州出身のアーティストで1943年生まれ。彼のインスタレーションは見る者の光と空間の認知に働きかける。世界中で活躍する彼は、日本でも数多くの作品を発表している。たとえば直島の「南寺」は内部全てを黒く塗った木造の「寺」である。訪問者は真っ暗なその内部にじっと座っている。すると次第に目が暗闇に慣れ、１０分後には目の前の空間に幽霊のような白いカタチが浮かび上がる。

たくさんある明り取りの一つ

2004年に直島にオープンした地中美術館は、一部彼の作品のために建設されたものだ。「オープン・スカイ」は天井の高い部屋で、コンクリートの壁に椅子が備え付けてある。天井には大きな四角い穴が開いていて空を眺めることができる。たとえ曇りの日でも、そこから見える空は信じられないくらい美しい。雨であっても大丈夫。天井の穴から降り注ぐ雨水は、床に設置された鉄板を流れるようになっている。椅子は十分に奥まったところにあるので濡れてしまうことは無い。

「光の家」は似たような原理で作られている。機械仕掛けでスライドする屋根で、天井に四角い穴が開き、そこから日の出と日の入りの様子を眺めることができる。

僕は一昨日、東京アートビートと「白熊」誌のスタッフと共にこの取材を敢行しにやって来た。東京の猛暑を逃れたいということもあって。おりしも新潟県は大雨で、周囲の山々から霧が立ち上り雰囲気は上々。

「家」はこのような山間にある十日町市の外れに位置する。この地方の冬の豪雪に備えて、玄関は地上2.7メートルの高さに据えられている。階段を上るとまるで寺院の前の石段を登っているような気になる。

一歩入ると、伝統的日本美の現代版に圧倒される。インテリアデザイン誌では何度も目にしたが、実際に訪ねるのは初めてだ！家の中全体に、安らげる木と畳のにおいが微かに漂っている。しかし、照明だけは一般の伝統日本家屋とは全く異なるものである。

壁の上部全てには光の路が巡っている。その柔らかな黄色い光はスイッチで調整可能だ。しかし全てタレルの薦める明度が指定されているので、そのままにしておいた。普通なら巻物などが飾られている床の間には、タレルの光のインスタレーションが設置されている。

二階のレイアウトは20畳敷きの空を見るための部屋と台所を中心に構成されている。台所はコップや金物、瀬戸物といった食器類が備えてあり、自由に使うことができる。自分で料理しても、現地で用意される大きな塗り箱の弁当を注文しても良し。

一階には別の和室が一つ、それにとてもスマートな温泉風呂…。だが一つしかないので、男性女性は順番を決めなければいけない。

記憶に残る「光の家」の温泉

風呂場でのタレルの光のアレンジはちょっと変わっている。湯船の縁とドア枠に光ファイバーケーブルが張り巡らされているのだ。これはこれで雰囲気があるのだが、正直、家の他の部分と合っていない。1980年代のフロリダにこんなカクテルバーがあったかも知れないなどと考えてしまう。お湯がぬるめだったのも、ちょっと残念だ。しかし僕にとって非常に記憶に残る温泉の一つには間違いない。

雨で、日の出のために屋根の穴を開けるわけには行かなかった。でもそんなことは大して問題じゃない。雨はいい感じだったのだから。家中の灯りが深いオレンジ色に抑えられ、夜のくつろいだ雰囲気になる。

僕たちはだいたい夜の1時には布団を敷いて眠りについた。だが3時15分には屋根の穴を開ける興奮した人々の騒ぎで起こされた。雨が止んだのだ。そして夜明けが始まる！

夕陽はともかく、夜明けの空を見ることはそうあることじゃない。ましてや、そのために作られた穴から、夜中に起きて熱心に空を観察するなんてあり得ない。僕はそれから1時間半、空を見つめ続けた。漆黒の夜空からやや明るい黒、それにわずかに濃い藍色に変化し、ゆっくりと、ゆっくりと夜が明けて行く…。最初は長いこと暗いままだった空が、微妙に藍色に変化したと気づいた時は、自分でも信じられないほど感動した。

僕は色が変化したと感知できた時にカメラのシャッターを切った。しかし後で見てみると、最初にとった8枚のうち5枚は全く同じに写っている。オートマでは、人間の目では見分けられる色の違いを殆ど区別できていない。太陽が顔を出してしまえば、空の色はもっと早く変化し、カメラにも鮮明に写るようになった。

起きる時には、1時間半もの時間が経っていたとは到底思えなかった。それから僕たちはもっとも素晴らしい光景、谷から昇る太陽を拝んだ。

東から太陽が昇る様子、まるでアフリカの風景を見ているようだった。朝霧を放つ山々から燃える太陽が顔を見せる。


信じられないほど豪華な朝食

それから2、3時間寝たら、朝食の時間（もう一つのお楽しみ！）、そして出発の時…。最高の体験だった！

「光の家」は日中一般訪問者に開放されているので、僕たちは10時までにチェックアウトしなければならなかった。悲しい…。年間を通じて大勢の人々がこの家を訪ねるんだろうけど、自分たちが泊まったことはとても個人的に感じるものだ。帰る道々、僕たちは翌年にまた泊まりに来る計画を話し合った。

新潟方面にお越しの読者に追加情報。現在開催中の越後妻有アートトリエンナーレ、最終日は9月10日（日）です。

  1. アフォーダンス理論で有名な佐々木正人氏のもとで学び、タレルの存在を教えていただいて98年に世田谷美術館で「光はどこから来るのか?」展を見て以来タレルの大ファンです。と言っても日本で常設されているのは新潟の家と直島だけと聞いているので、本物は長いこと見ていません。今回のレポートでますます新潟の家に宿泊してみたくなりました。
