町のかき氷屋さん

私のうちの近所にあるかき氷屋さんは、とてもレトロな雰囲気で通る人の目を誘う。一度は訪れてみたくて、この季節が来るのをずっと待っていた。長い梅雨がやっと明けた蝉の鳴く暑いある日、私はついにそのかき氷屋さんを訪れた。そして、私がそこで出会ったのは、人情溢れる人々、情緒あるゆったりした時間、時代が変わっても大切にされる沢山のモノ達…。今回は、とても素敵な“かき氷屋さん”をご紹介します！

最近ではあまり見かけなくなった氷販売店。氷屋さんの減少の原因は、電気冷蔵庫の普及によって、家庭でも簡単に氷が作れるようになったからだそうだ。そんな中、今でも昔と変わらぬスタイルを持ち続ける氷工房”石ばし”。東京の三軒茶屋にあるこのお店は、ご夫婦で始められてから創業40年にもなり、店には創業当初からずっと使われている家具や食器が今でも大切に置いてある。

「本業は氷問屋で、かき氷屋として営業するのは夏期のみ。最初は趣味程度に始めたんですよ。」と、お店の女将さんは言う。ここのかき氷のこだわりは、シェーブドアイス（削る）にある。しなっとしているのではなく、パリパリっと食感が楽しめる削り氷。そのような削り方のかき氷は他ではなかなか食べられないそうだ。また、“あずきミルク”用のあずきの炊き方にもこだわりがあるとか。かき氷の量も多過ぎず、少な過ぎずと丁度よい加減の量である。さらに、子供のお客さんには食べ過ぎてお腹をこわさないよう、一日に一杯以上は売らないという配慮もあるらしい。

お店の名物、三色氷！

ここで、少しだけかき氷のルーツについてお話ししたい。ウィキペディアによると、かき氷の始まりは平安時代にまで遡る。冬場の天然氷を氷室（ひむろ）という、日のあたらない山腹に穴を掘った場所に運んで夏まで保存し、夏になるとその氷を取り出して、甘茶蔓（あまちゃづる）の樹液を煮詰めたシロップをかけて食べたそうだ。この時代にかき氷を食することができたのは、宮廷にいた家臣など身分の位が高い者だけ。今と比べ、氷というものはとても貴重で贅沢な食べ物だったのだ。大阪にも氷室という街の地名があるけれど、由来はここからなのかな？

ここのお店のかき氷のメニューはとても豊富。メニュー以外でもお客さんの好みに合わせて作ってくれる。そして、私がこのお店にきて感心したことは、お客さんの年齢層の広さ。子供からお年寄りまで、また男の人でも女の人でも誰もが足を運べるお店というのも、ここの魅力の一つだと思う。

かき氷の器も素敵なものばかりだ。

ここのお店のもう一つの顔といえば、ご主人自慢の昔懐かしい”ミゼット”ことオート三輪。このオート三輪を見かける機会は今では殆どない。オート三輪が隆盛を極めたのは、1930年代から1950年代で、より性能の勝る四輪トラックに取って代わられ、衰退した。このミゼットにかき氷の機械一式を積んで、夏祭りなどの催事の出前にも応じる。

このお店は昭和のモノ達で溢れている。けれど、私の目にはそのどれもが“古い”という感覚を飛び越えて、どこか新鮮に映り、それほどまでに長い時間大切にされてきたモノと人の間に、昭和を生き抜いて来た人々の“モノに対する特別な想い”を少しだけ感じとれた気がした。また、希薄になりがちな人との繋がりが、このお店では今だに大切にされていることも本当に素晴らしかった。
