西澤丞：Deep Inside　日本の未来異次元空間

東京日比谷交差点直下40メートルを突き抜ける巨大地下トンネル、群馬の山中地下約500メートルに広がる地下ドーム。地上で生活している私達には、想像もつかない広大な地下スペースが日本には存在する。また、同じ日本で暮らしていても、私達一般人は立ち入ることのない場所：原子力発電所、清掃工場、それからエネルギー研究機構などなど、映画の世界だけだと思っていた未来空間が本当に実在する。そんなハイパー・シュール（！）な日本の裏側を写真集「Deep Inside」にまとめた、フォトグラファー西澤丞（にしざわ・じょう）さんに、お話を聞いた。

西澤さん、この度発売された写真集「Deep Inside」拝見しました。こんな、フルCGの映画のセットみたいな場所が日本にもあるってびっくりです。しかもピンクやグリーンのライティングまで完璧です！

いえいえ、CGは全く使ってませんよ（笑）。本当にこんな光景が、日比谷交差点の下にあるんです。ライティングも現場のものそのままで、ストロボも使ってません。さっきまで地上の車の喧騒が聞こえていたのに、地下に入ったとたん、いきなり静まりかえった地下空間になるんです。

ここの場所では日比谷共同溝の工事現場を数日間だけ一般公開するイベント「東京ジオサイトプロジェクト」が行われましたが、そのプロジェクトにも参加しました。また研究所などではまわりはどこにでもある公園風の敷地なのに、ドア一枚隔てて、まったくの異次元空間が広がる。こういった立ち入り禁止区域の非日常空間に興味を引かれて、とり続けた写真を今回まとめました。

現在も東京山の手通り地下30メートルで工事が進められている、首都高速道路中央環状新宿線の見学イベント「TOKYO TUNNELIX（東京トンネリックス）」もオフィシャル・カメラマンとして撮影されたんですね。

そうですね。今回写真集にも掲載されている代々木シールド等、工事の進行状況の写真を撮影し続けています。この他にも、2005年10月にトンネルの中で行われた「地底ファッションショー」等のイベントも撮影しました。日本の土木服にインスパイアされてパリコレでニッカボッカーズを披露した、ベルンハルト・ウィルヘルム氏によるファッションショーで、実際にトンネルで働いている方々がモデルとして登場していましたよ。

写真集の中には、原子力発電所内部の写真もありますが、相当撮影ご苦労されたとか。

ここを撮影するにあたり、僕は3重の防護服を着込んで、カメラはビニールとテープでぐるぐる巻きの状態で入りました。しかも、この原子炉の中にうっかりカメラを落とそうものなら、「1ヶ月原子炉止まります」と言われて、怖かったですねぇ。撮影時はカメラを首から提げて3脚につけて、柵から乗り出した状態で、広報さんには三脚の足をおさえてもらって…そんな状態での撮影でした。また、やはりセキュリティーの問題上、撮影してはならない箇所がかなりあって、アングルを決めるたびに、広報さんに確認してもらい、更に撮れた写真ももう一度見て確認してもらう必要がありました。

ちょっと以外だったのが、ゴミ処理場（清掃工場）の中までも撮影対象だったとは！

やはり、めずらしかったらしく、今までに撮影目的でカメラが入ったことがなかったらしいです。しかも、撮影後は臭いを消すために、お風呂に入ってから帰る、というのが撮影許可を頂く上での条件でした。着替えとパンツ持参で撮影に挑んだわけですが、最後、カメラの布ストラップ部分だけは、取り外して洗うわけに行かなかったのでそのまま帰りました。首に掛けて撮影していただけなんですが、びっくりするくらい臭いがこびりついていて困りました（笑）。

最近特に機能美を追及したデザインに注目が集まりますが、西澤さんが写真を通じて伝えたい点は何ですか？

今回撮影した場所にある全てのもののフォルム、色、ライティング、どれをとっても、完全に機能性だけを考えた結果の組み合わせで、配色ひとつとっても見た目のデザインを考慮したものは一切ありません。結果、見たこともない様な、美しい非日常の光景ができている、それを見て欲しいですね。

もうひとつとても重要なことは、今までこういった世界最先端の技術が日本に存在することを、僕ら一般の日本人はほとんど知らない現状の中、写真というメディアを使って、もっと広く知ってもらいたいと考えたんです。僕ら日本人自身が、もう少し自分の国にあるすばらしい技術力を誇りに思ってもいいのではないかと思いますよ。それを写真を通じて伝えていくのは、僕のライフワークだと考えています。
