Wordpressは、ウェブサイトの管理にはとても便利だ。だが、Wordpressがデフォルトの状態である限りは、ウェブサイトに素晴らしいプラットフォームを与えることができ、僅かな調整で機能を大幅に増やす事ができる。じゃあ、一番簡単な調整とは何だろう？それは…プラグイン！自分のWordpressに、特別なファイルを使うだけで、新しい機能を追加することができる。今日は、ものすごく貴重なWordpressの8つのプラグインを紹介しよう…。

WP Shortstat

WP Shortstat

ジェフ・ミナードによる「WP-Shortstat」は、ショーン・インマンの簡単なウェブサイト統計ソフトウェア「Shortstat」に影響を受けて作られたプラグイン。OS Xのユーザーならば、「WP-Shortstat Widget」をダウンロードすることも可能だ。「WP-Shortstat Widget」があれば、Widgetを表示するだけで自分のウェブサイトの統計をチェックすることができる。もし「Shortstat」が気に入ったら、ショーン・インマンのさらに便利なmintにアップグレードすることを考えてみるのもいいかもしれない。

Wordpressの初心者にこんな質問をされることがある。「どうやったらpostにサムネイルを貼り付けられる？」。Wordpressはデフォルトでそのような機能を提供していないのだけど、その“方法”は提供している。実は、Wordpress内の”カスタム・フィールド”を使うことによって、無限のメタ・データを投稿することができる。その例が、ポストでの特定のサムネイルの使用。スコット・レイリーの「Get Custom」は、どのポストのメタ・データでも取り戻すことができる。

Wordpress2には、システム内に構築されたキャッシュがある。しかし問題なのは、必要のないもののキャッシュまでを残してしまうこと。例えば、ウェブサイトの一部のデザインの変更をしたとして、何度ページの再読み込みをしても、変更した箇所が現れないことがある。だが、ピーター・ウエストウッドによる「WP Cache Inspect」を使えば、いつでもキャッシュをクリアすることが可能になるんだ。

ジョン・グルバーによる「Markdown」があれば、面倒くさいHTMLを書かずに済むため、時間の節約にはもってこい。なぜなら、HTMLタグを開いたり閉じたりする代わりに、星印（*）、カッコ、その他の単純な構文を使用して、リンク、太文字、イタリック書体などを容易に作ることが可能になるからだ。「Markdown」は、元々Perlスクリプトだったが、Wordpress用に改造されたことも書き添えておこう。

WP Pagenavi

Wordpressのデフォルトのインストールは、「戻る」「次へ」の二つのリンクで、大量のアーカイブを処理している。しかし、レスター・チャンの「WP Pagenavi」があれば、数ページにわたるアーカイブに、「1 2 3…」といった簡単なページナンバーのリンクを加えることができる。自分が現在、アーカイブの何ページ目を見ているかを知る事ができるのは、とても便利だ。

Askimet

ブログ・コメントのスパムには、ひたすら「NO!」と言おう。もし、自分のブログのアクセス数が高いのなら、一日に何百というコメント・スパムを受け取ることは避けられない。ここで紹介する「Askimet」の意味は、二度と見る必要がないということ。「Askimet」は、新しいWordpressのインストールだが、それはデフォルトでは付いていない。（Askimetがキャッチしたブログ・スパムは、データベースの中心に記録される。そして、Askimetにスパムをキャッチさせることによって、それがさらに効率的になり僕らみんなを救ってくれる。）

WP Related Entries

アレキサンダー・マロヴによる「WP Related Entries」は、自分が読んでいるポストに関連するポストのリストを表示してくれるちょっと賢いプラグインだ。自動でアーカイブ上のポストと比較してくれるが、やや気まぐれな時もある。しかし、95%の場合は、読者が興味を抱くような別の記事を表示し、アーカイブ上のポストに飛べるようにしてくれる。

ライアン・ダフによるWP Contact Formは、ウェブサイト内に即席の“お問い合わせフォーム”を付けてくれるプラグイン。自分のEメールを表示する必要もなければ、スパムを惹き付けたりもせず、長ったらしいコーディングのために無駄な時間を費やす必要もない。その代わり、ウェブサイトのもっと重要な部分に時間を費やす事ができるんだ！
