進化する任天堂のコントローラー

ビデオ・ゲーム業界において、今週はとても重要な週だ。なぜなら、今日から世界最大のビデオゲームのイベント「E3」（エレクトロニック・エンターテイメント・エキスポ）が、ロサンジェルス・コンベンションセンターにて行われているから。任天堂、Sony、マイクロソフトなどの主要メーカーをはじめとする500社以上の企業が集まり新作を紹介する。そんな中、今年の注目はなんと言ってもモーションセンサー付きのコントローラの任天堂の”Wii（ウィー）”。今日は、PingMagが、任天堂のコントローラがどのようにデザインとテクノロジーを進化させてきたのかについて話をしよう。

1985年の「ニンテンドーエンターテイメントシステム」（「ファミリーコンピュータ」の外国版）のコントローラ。

じゃあ、1985年（日本では1984年）のNES（ニンテンドーエンターテイメントシステム）の話から始めようか。日本版とは少しデザインが違うけど、機能は同じ。このNESのコントローラーは、ほぼ間違いなく、その後20年のコントローラ・デザインに影響を与えてきた。

「十時ボタン」をフィーチャーしたNESコントローラは、現在20代かそれ以上のゲーマーにとって、ある種のカルチャー的なアイコンであったと言えるだろう。その証拠に、このデザインを使ったベルトのバックルやTシャツなどの商品が、次から次へと登場した。

興味深いことに、NESコントローラは、任天堂が後に拡大するUIデザインの特性を表している。当時、そのシーンの大部分は、真っ黒なコントローラであったのに対し、NESコントローラの眩しい赤のボタンは「押してくれ〜！」と叫んでいるかのようだった。

評価:これは永遠に忘れられることのないクラシック・デザインである。コントローラとしては、四角すぎて使い心地は良くないが、そんな欠点も許してしまうほど僕たちはこのコントローラが大好きだ。という訳で、10点中8点。

1989年のグローブ型コントローラ「パワーグローブ」。

グローブ型コントローラの「パワーグローブ」は、任天堂の正規の商品ではないけれど、任天堂の商品として一生語り継がれてゆくに違いない。嘲笑されながらも愛されたパワーグローブは、たった数種類の特定のゲームに追随する形で1989年に発表された。

パワーグローブは、腕や指先の動きを感じ取ることができる“バーチャル・リアリティ”的な商品だった。しかし、サポート不足や、任天堂のNESコントローラをやっと使いこなせるようになった僕たちにとっては、あまりにも先を行きすぎているという欠点があった。この記事の最後に紹介するけれど、パワーグローブはおよそ20年後の現在、新たな形とで生まれ変わることも追記しておこう。

評価:「パワーグローブ」は、サポート不足が目立つ高価な周辺機器のひとつだった。これを身につけることで、サイバー忍者みたいにはなれたけれど、ほとんどのゲーマーが見てみぬ振りをした。10点中4点。

1990年の「スーパーニンテンドー」（日本の「スーパーファミコン」の外国版）。

1990年に発売された「スーパーニンテンドー」（日本のスーパーファミコン）のコントローラの主な切り札は、相対的に配置された6つのボタンとその使いやすさだった。右側にはカラフルなA・B・X・Yの4つのボタン、上部の左右にはL・Rボタンが追加された。このL・Rボタンを押す事により、レース系のゲームなどで、プレイヤーの位置を選ぶことができるようになった。

スーパーニンテンドーの6ボタンコントローラは、当時大人気だった「ストリートファイター2」(ゲームセンターのバージョンも6ボタン) を再制作させるきっかけとなった。「ストリートファイター2」は、90年代半ばのその当時、誰もが欲しがるゲームだったので、任天堂にとっても素晴らしい業績のひとつとなった。

これは他のメーカーにとっても大きなプレッシャーとなり、セガはそれまでの3ボタンコントローラを捨て、メガドライブ用の6ボタンコントローラを導入した。

評価:スーパーニンテンドーのコントローラは、任天堂自身にとっても大きな挑戦だった。他社には不可能なことをゲーマーに提供し、後に業界のコントローラ戦争をも引き起こした。4つのカラフルなボタン（残念ながらアメリカ版には無い）は、紛れもなく任天堂を代表するデザインとなった。10点中7点。

1996年の「ニンテンドー64」

1996年、任天堂はニンテンドー64と共に、それまで誰も見た事がなかったコントローラを発表した。スーパーマリオブラザーズなどを手がけ、“現代コンピューターゲームの父”とも呼ばれる宮本茂氏とのコラボーレーションで生まれたデザインは、その奇妙なルックスで業界に衝撃を与えた。しかし、実際に使用した時の手になじむような感覚は、あっという間に多くの人に愛された。それまでの長方形型のコントローラに代わって、ニンテンドー64は人間工学的なアプローチを取り入れたものとなった。

このコントローラは、中央部分のアナログスティック「3Dスティック」をフィーチャーし、またもや任天堂が“スタンダード”を作り上げた。また、このコントローラの背面には、銃の引き金を引くような感覚が味わえるトリガーボタンが導入された。このボタンにより、シューティング・ゲームがより面白くなったことは言うまでもない。論理的に色分けされたボタンは、ニンテンドー64のコントローラをさらに使いやすくさせた。

評価:ニンテンドー64のコントローラは、それまでの型にはまったコントローラ・デザインを打ち破るものだった。アナログなコントロール方法（例えば、「小」→歩く、「大」→走る）は、他のメイカーにもすぐに取り入れられた。という訳で、任天堂はまたもや他社が従わなければならない“スタンダード”を作り上げた。余談だが、これは僕の大好きなコントローラでもある。10点中9点。

2001年の「ニンテンドーゲームキューブ」

2001年に登場した「ニンテンドーゲームキューブ」のコントローラは、ニンテンドー64に似た形だったものの、尖ったハンドルは姿を消し、十時キーは前回よりもさらに不思議な位置へと移動した（中には使いにくいとの声もあった）。

右側の一際大きな緑のAボタン（アクションボタン）を中心にして、周囲にBボタン（赤）・Xボタン（灰）・Yボタン（灰）が配置されたコントローラは、それまでのものより簡素化され、それはまるで「重要なのはボタンの数じゃなくて、そのボタンで何をするかなんだ」と言ってるかのようだった。

評価:ゲームキューブのコントローラは、大きくてカラフルなボタンが任天堂らししかったが、型にはまったデザインでもあった。新たなスタンダードを作り上げることもなく、残念ながらプレイするにあたっての新たな感動を提供することもなかった。という訳で、10点中6点。

2005年、任天堂はゲーム業界に革命を起こした。それが、2006年秋に発売予定の「Wii」の新しいコントローラに導入されるモーションセンサーだ。既存のものとは全く異なったそのコントローラは、片手で握りゲームを楽しむことができる。テニスのゲームがやりたいなら、コントローラを振る。シューティング・ゲームがしたいなら、コントローラで画面を狙う。そんな感じだ。

Wiiは、ニンテンドーDSの革新的なタッチスクリーンの成功に拍車をかけた任天堂がどのように僕たちがゲームと相互に作用するかを考えるパラダイムシフトを象徴している。任天堂は、今再び他社とは全く異なるものを導入することで話題性を提供した。このコントローラは、単にゲーマのためだけではなく、今よりもさらに多くの人にビデオゲームを楽しませるものとなるだろう。

現在、Wiiはロサンジェルスで行われているイベント「E3 2006」で初めて一般に公開されている。

評価:先日TIME誌の記者が誰よりも早くWiiを試したらしい。レポーターのコメントは「面白すぎて返したくなかったね」。…うーん、待ちきれない…。早く触りたい！ということで評価は、10点中の…？
