シンプルさと愛に溢れた家具作り

今日紹介するデザイングループとワークショップの名前は、ちょっと誤解を招きやすいかも？スーパーロボットは、サイバー系のテクノロジー・マニアのプロジェクトではなく、同名のワークショップで活動する建築家の芦沢啓治さんと細川鉄也さんをはじめとする友人達の気さくなコラボレーション名。そこでは皆でデザインや発明を行い、すぐ横でそのアイディアが製作されていくという「リアルタイムのデザイン」が行われている。それは小さいながらも意欲的で、素晴らしい作品を作り出すプロジェクトだった。

芦沢さんはご自身の建築実務の傍らで、更にスーパーロボットと頻繁にコラボされてますよね。スーパーロボットでの主な役割は何ですか？

芦沢：スーパーロボットは、東京で行われたデザイナーズウィークなどで、展示会や作品の公開を始めました。2002年には、ベルギーのコルトレイクで行われるデザイン・フォー・ヨーロッパの展示会が、国際的なデザイナーを探しているらしいという事を知りました。コルトレイクを知ってる人が周りに誰もいなかったので、あまり期待はしてなかったのですが、とりあえず作品をいくつか見せに行ったんですよ。私がスーパーロボットを国際的な展示会で紹介したのはその時が初めてでしたね。その時の反響と、出展していた著名なデザイナーの面々には驚きました。そんな経緯で、スーパーロボットのデザイナー以外に、広報担当にもなりました。

コラボとは、どんなやり方で？

芦沢：例えば、僕が依頼人の為に家をデザインする時には、スーパーロボットが階段や家具、窓やドアを一緒に作ります。コラボする理由は、僕達双方にとって楽だから。上手にコミュニケーションを取って、インスピレーションを与え合うんです。あと、共同作業の場合はコストの配分も楽になりますね。「今回はあんまりお金がないんだけど、次回には余分に払うよ、絶対！」みたいな（笑）。

スーパーロボットは、デザイン事務所とワークショップと工場が丸ごと一つになってますよね。製品を自分で「製作する」ことが大切だと思う理由は？

細川：デザインを机上で終わらせて、誰かが「いつか」作って販売するのを待つよりは、ワークショップでクライアントの為の試作品やモデルを作るだけでなく、自分達のデザインを直接実現して試すことが楽しいんです。技術と場所はあるから、自分達の好きなものを作れますしね。解放感ありますよ！

芦沢：あと、スーパーロボットでは、このやり方で素早い物作りが出来ます。アイデアと、物作りが直結しているのです。最近では、自分で試作品を作る人も殆どいないようで残念です。自分の作品を「どうやって」実際に「製作するのか」が分かれば、沢山のことが学べます。僕はそれが本当に好きだし、そうすることが自然に思えますね。

デザインの仕方はどんな感じですか？先にデザインして、試作品を作る段階で間違いを見つけるのか、それとも材料を弄ってると突然にアイディアが湧くような感じですか？

細川：画が先に上がってくることもあれば、その逆もあります。大抵は事務所とワークショップを行ったり来たりの往復です。

私達は、「リアルタイム」で物を作っていると言えると思います。画から製作までは、殆どライブ・パフォーマンスですよ。まるで育つように物が出来上がっていく。

次は作品に関して。”FPS（フラット・パッキング・システム）”というシリーズを作られてますが、この作品の意図はどんなものですか？

芦沢：FPSは、鋼鉄の隠された要素と、家具とその製作における新しい考え方を探る試みでした。過程は極めてシンプルで、鋼鉄の薄板（厚さ1.6mmほどの）をレーザーカッターで切ったり、穴をあけたりミシン目を入れるだけです。最初は、鋼板が簡単にミシン目沿いに曲げられる事に驚きました…折り紙みたいなんですよ！

だけど、時間がたつと折り目や継ぎ目が壊れたりしません？

細川：私達は「ライフ・ジョイント」とか「ライフ・ヒンジ」と呼んでいます。何度も繰り返し折りたたまない限り十分な耐久力で作動しますが、やがて壊れる日もやって来るでしょう。

レーザーで切られた鋼板は、もうそれだけで図画的で美しいですね！こういう鋼板製の椅子を自宅で作るのは難しいのですか？

細川：いいえ、部品をアルミの鋲か普通のネジで組み立てるだけで出来上がり！とても安定してます。安定してます。また、アルミと木のバリエーションもありますね。FPS製品の大半には、本当に変哲のない919mm x 1829mm、日本の畳サイズの鋼板を使います。

作品は実際にはどこで売っているのですか？あと、参考までにあの赤い椅子はおいくらなんでしょう？

芦沢：これらの作品の殆どはオーダーメイドで、椅子は4万円くらいです。オーダーメイド製品にしては安いでしょう？（笑）

例えばこの棚とか…引っ越す時に平らに戻すことも出来るのですか？

芦沢：ええ。Designmaiに出展した時、殆どの作品は展示会の後に平らに戻すことが出来ました。移動には便利ですね！（笑）事実、「フラット／ボリューム」が展示会のタイトルでもあったんです。

こちらの「Designmai」に出展された椅子も好きなんですが、どういう構造なのかよく分からないんですけど！？

細川：布“だけ”だけで作られた椅子を作ってみたかったんです。あと、変身のアイディアも気に入ってましたし。だから、ゆったり出来る6mの長さのクッションと、それを折り畳んでファスナーを締めると一脚の頑丈な椅子になる案を考えたんです。

芦沢：ファスナーを開いた時には、中身が文字通り“飛び出て”きます。まるで内臓みたいですよ！（笑）中のクッションもバックスキンで覆われています。残念ながら、この作品の制作費にはかなりの額を費やしましたし、技術的な図面の製作も延々とかかりました。

作品「カーペット・チェア」は、この長クッションのアイディアの延長上にある、インテリア・デザインと家具の複合のようですね！

細川：普段床にしか使われていないカーペットの用途を変えたくて、椅子にしてみたんです。鋼鉄とカーペット。とてもシンプルなアイディアでした。

遊び心のあるシンプルさが、作品のキーワードの一つのようですね。それと、プロジェクトのいくつか…例えば、こちらのオフィスの家具や、個人の依頼によって作った渋谷のホームオフィス302などは、殆ど重力を感じさせませんよね。

芦沢：シンプルであることはとても重要で、時には唯一の要素でもあります。クライアントからは、時としてこれが欲しい、あれが欲しいと、沢山の要求を突きつけられることがありますが…。それに見合うだけの予算がなかったりするんですね。だから、私達は必要でないものを切り取り、削り取り、その企画を実現する為に“本当に必要な要素”を見つけなければいけません。そして、それが私達のデザインになるのです。

芦沢：俳句を作るようなものだと思いますね。最初は言いたいことを100文字にまとめて、最終的にはそれを全て表現できる17文字になるまで削り続ける。

ところで、家を建てるのに使ったこのケージみたいなのは何ですか？

芦沢：これは私の建築企画の一つです。目的は、とても小さな土地（たった30㎡）に、あるご夫婦の家を建てる事でした。

そこで、枠ユニットを手に入る一番安い鋼鉄で作って、お互いにくっつけたんです。この小さな4階建ての家には、100㎡くらいの面積と、屋上庭園、駐車場が組み込んであります。台所、寝室、客室、居間に、寝室。全てミニマムスペースですが、クライアントは本当に喜んでましたよ！
