ダミアン・ハーストやトレイシー・エミン、チャップマン・ブラザーズなど、常にスキャンダラスなアーティスト達を排出し続ける英国最大の美術賞、ターナー・プライズ。そんなターナー・プライズに昨年ノミネートされたのは、“ロックを感じさせる”アーティスト、スコットランド出身のジム・ランビーだった。今日からミヅマ・アート・ギャラリーで始まったジム・ランビーの日本での初の個展「P.I.L」に先駆けて、PingMagは13分間の超特急インタビューを行った。

2005年度のターナー・プライズにノミネートされた作品、「ザ・キンクス」は、その名の通り、英国のバンド、ザ・キンクスへのオマージュとして制作された。床一面に貼り巡らされた黒・白・銀のビニール・テープや、カラフルな鳥の像のインスタレーションからも分かるように、その作品はものすごい勢いで視覚に訴えかけてくる。「ロックを聞くように作品を感じて欲しい」と本人も語るその作品は、その説明通り視覚で感じるアートなのだ。
まるで「音楽」がキー・ワードのようになっている彼だが、実際ティーンエイジ・ファンクラブの前身だったバンド、ザ・ボーイ・ヘアドレッサーのメンバーでもあり、同郷のプライマル・スクリームのベスト盤のジャケット・デザインを手がけたりと、確かに音楽との縁は深そう。では、さっそく本人に話を伺ってみよう。
まず、今回展示されている作品で代表作でもある「Zobop」というコトバの意味は何ですか？ちゃんとしたコトバではないようですけど。
「Zobop」はNYで見たスプレーで書かれたニックネームだったんだ。だから、これと言った意味はないんだけど、「bop」ってコトバをタイトルに入れたいな、と思って。B-Bopとか、音楽に密接に関係している感じがいいだろう？
そういえば、スプレー缶を使ったオブジェがありましたね。
ああ。スプレー缶の上にコンクリートがのってるやつね。あれは、スプレー缶がコンクリートの重みで勝手に動くようにしてあるんだ。缶が空になりつづけるまで、スプレーし続けるんだよ。使い切るまで4、5ヶ月かかるだろうね。あれは人間の一生を意味しているんだ。ゆっくり体に圧力がかかって、そしていつか絶えてゆく…。
なるほど。でも、そんな意味なのに結構簡単に触れるようになってましたけど。気をつけないと今夜のオープニングで酔っぱらいが重いカバンなんか置いちゃいますよ（笑）。
全くだな！オープニングの前に柵を作ってもらうよ！
作品に不要品を使っていると聞きましたが？それは何故ですか？
フリーマーケットで見つけたものとか日常使っているものを利用してるんだ。日常使うものには、ものすごくリアリティがあるからね。
中古の電化製品も使ってます？
レコードプレイヤーとかライトはあるね。あと、この東京の展覧会用に作った作品の上部にあるモーターも。なぜだい？
つい最近まで日本でPSE法という新しい法律が問題になっていたんですよ。PSEマークのない中古電化製品が販売を禁止されるっていう。その中にはビンテージ・ギターなどの楽器類も含まれていたので、ミュージシャン達がものすごい勢いで反対したこともあって、結局施行前に改正されたんですけど。
そのミュージシャン達は、よくやったな！でも、それってすごく面白いよ。だって、俺は4月1日に東京に着いたんだ。俺が来るのを分かってたのかな？
でも、PSE法の話はご存知なかったんでしょ？私はてっきり、それに合わせて来日したのかと思ってました。音楽とアートの狭間にいて、さらに不要品を作品に再利用するあなたが日本で展覧会を開くことで、アート的な面からもPSE法に対して何か叫ぼうとか。
全く知らなかったよ。来日の日程をこの辺りにしたのは、打ち合わせの時にみんなが「桜を見にこいよ！」って言ったからさ。
じゃあ、桜を見るために現在来日中?
そうさ！花見だってしたよ。
そうだったんですか…。この個展用に作られた作品があるって言ってましたけど、東京の何にインスパイアされたんですか？
俺はインスピレーションっていうのは、間違って使われがちだと思っているんだ。これは、もっと「気づいたこと」とか「感じたこと」とか、そういうことなんだ。俺はあまりインスピレーションを信じていないんだ。
でも、あなたの作品は視覚的にとてもロックだと言われていますよね。音楽からインスパイアされて作品を作っているんじゃないんですか？

人に音楽のことを言われるのは嬉しいよ。友達はみんなミュージシャンだし、DJしたりとか、自分も音楽をやっているからね。でも、物を作る時、自分はもっと彫刻を作るという目線で、やっているんだ。音楽のことを考えて作っているんじゃないんだよ。例えば、さっき話した「Zobop」の床の模様は、まるで音楽のビートのようだと思わないかい？でもあれは、計画的して作ったものじゃない。自然と生まれてきたものなんだ。
あなたは自分が気づいていないだけで、きっとすでにロック・マインドが心のどこかに根付いてるんですよ。
そうかもね（笑）。
じゃあ、あなたは音楽は何であると思ってます？
音楽そのものがアートのある形だと思っているよ。でもアート、デザイン、音楽の狭間の境界線は、間違いなく霞んで来ていると思う。そして、それはすごくいい事だって思っているよ。
あなたの展覧会に来てくれる人には、どのように感じてもらいたいですか？
俺は見てもらう人が感じることをそのまま感じてもらいたい。俺の作品にはあまり、堅苦しいものはないんだ。作品を見て何か考えが浮かんだり、言いたくなるまで何回でも足を運んで欲しいし、そこから会話が生まると素晴らしいよね。そしてその会話が、ストーリーみたいになればすごく面白くなると思う。そうすれば、自分の作品の知らない部分がどんどん見えてくるからね。
じゃあ、ロックな人という説明で始まったインタビューなので、最後に一番好きなバンドを教えて下さい。
好きなバンドは沢山いるよ！でも、どうしても一組だけだとしたら、60年代のサイケデリック・バンドLOVEかな。彼らの音や姿勢、もちろん曲自体も大好きなんだ。彼らは最高のバンドだよ。
今日はお会いできて良かったです。あなたのようなアーティストが、ロックとアートの関係をさらに密接なものにすると、これからのアートは今よりもっと刺激的になると思いますよ。最後に、レセプションの前に、作品の周りに柵を作ることも忘れないで下さいね（笑）！

うわー、すごい偶然でした。
友人とレセプション行ってきました。作品の魅力や彼のアートの本質がいまいちわからなかったので、このインタビューは私のなかでとても価値があります。
レセプションの段階でビニールテープ以外の作品は売れていました。友人によると夜のクラブで彼がＤＪしたイベントはすっごく盛り上がったようです。ロックっぽいサウンド満載と聞いていたのですごく行きたかったんですが…！
