東京は、インターナショナルなビジュアル・クリエイターで溢れ返っている。流行を先取りするクールハンター達は、彼らが地元のクライアントに捕まえられる前に、なんとかして探し出そうとする。そんなクリエイターの一人が、今日紹介するPMKFA。現在東京を拠点に、面白いコンテンポラリー・デザインとイラストレーションをやっているスウェーデン出身、26才のマイケル・トーズビーだ。

先日、現在東京に仕事場を持つPMKFAのマイケルに会った。僕たちは、彼の作品や彼が受けた影響、また今日のヒップホップの在り方などについて、フリースタイルで話し始めた。

PMKFAは何の略なんだい？

元々はスウェーデンのある物の略なんだけど、もう何年もオリジナルの意味がなんだったかなんて考えたことはないんだ。それは、僕と友達の間にある「ある物」さ。

デザインはどうやって始めた？

1998年頃だね。俺は音楽をやりたいと思っていたけど、あまり得意じゃなかったんだ。それで、自分の興味があることをグラフィックで表現し始めた。音楽から始まって、それ以降もずっと音楽業界に足を踏み入れてきた。メジャー、インディーズ、両方のレベルにおいてね。

最近特に面白いと思っているプロジェクトってある？

んー、そうだな。すごく良いエネルギーをもらってる物がひとつあるね。ストックホルムをベースに活動しているLo-Fi Fnkというバンドのアルバムの共同ディレクションをして、すごいフォトグラファーと仕事したよ。いつもの俺の作品よりはもっとシンプルなんだけど良い出来で、自分にとっても写真ベースの仕事に向かう良い一歩になったと思ってるよ。長い間やろうと思っていたことだったのに、それに合うプロジェクトになかなか出会えなかったんだ。

LAの雑誌Arkitipが10ページ分の作品を依頼してきたんだってね。すごいじゃないか！

君は確か面白いプロダクト・デザインとか、パッケージ・デザインもやってるよね。それっていつものグラフィックの仕事の自然な延長みたいなものなのかい？

そうだね。ものづくりは子供の頃からやっていたんだ。紙で立体的な物を作るのが大好きだった。ある物体を真っ平らにして、そこから深さを作っていくってことが好きなんだよ。

この分野にもっと進んでゆく気はるのかい？

ああ、大ありさ。でも作るのが難しくて、自然にやろうとすると簡単じゃないんだ。イアリングはもっと作ってみたいし、俺のサイトで見られる発泡スチロールのラジカセは、俺がもっと改良しようと思ってるものなんだ。そうすれば、MP3プレイヤーとかで、音楽をかけられるようになるんだぜ。

ビギーか2パックと聞かれたら？

正直に言うと、どっちのことも評価はしないんだ。もし名前を挙げるべき人がいるとすれば、ワイリーかな。世界で一番落ち着きのないプロデューサーでMCだ。いつも動き回ってるんだよ。トリム＆スクラッチ、ニューハム・ジェネラルズ、スルー・デム、デジタル・ミスティックズ、あとは19才のスクリーム。2、3年前にロンドンのシーンから出て来たすごいガキなんだ。ヤツのやることにガッカリさせられたことは一度もないよ。

今はどんな仕事をしているんだい？

LAの8ビットってバンドのCDジャケットとプロモ用の素材を作ってる。Ubiquityと仕事してるんだが、いい感じだ。スウェーデンのインディーズ・レーベルとの仕事も進んでる。音楽の仕事が結構あるから、エキサイティングさ。

すごいデカい壁画もやってるんだろ？

ダチの一人が自分の壁に何か欲しがってたんだ。グラフィックをあんな大きさで見るなんて面白いだろうと思って、俺がやるって言ったのさ。どうすればその絵が部屋に影響するか、壁とどう密接に結びつくか、その辺をもうちょっと考えたいと思ってる。

東京・新宿の「With Assistant」のオフィスのイラスト。大きさは2.5×2m。Pilotのフェルトペンとアクリル・ベースのカラーで色を付けている。2005年後半のある暑い日に制作された。

これはプロジェクターで描いたのかい？それともフリーハンドで？

今のところは、プロジェクターだけだね。俺が使ったグラフィックは、すごく正確で何度も同じ模様が繰り返されてるんだ。だから、仕方ないんだよ。プロジェクターを使うのを一旦止めて、ランダムに描くのが楽しみだよ。

ロンドンの雑誌「Hit & Run」でのタイポグラフィック・イラストレーション。「Nang」は、「すごくいいもの」を意味する。よって「PURE NANG」は、「ものすごくいいもの」の意味。

  19. Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
