PingMagセミナーの今回のゲストは、takramの田川欣哉さん。田川さんは、今年の1月まで工業デザイナーの山中俊治氏率いるLeading Edge Design (L.E.D.)に所属。デザインエンジニアとして活動してきたが、「プロトタイピングに強い会社を作りたい」という事で今年の1月に独立、takramを立ち上げた。

田川さんは、過去に携わった作品の例としてNTT DoCoMoの地上デジタル放送コンセプトモデル「OnQ」の試作品、愛・地球博や、アルス・エレクトロニカセンターで常設された人型インタラクティブマシン「Cyclops」などに軽くふれた後、親指入力機器の「tagtype」と、レーザードローイングツール「Aftergrow」の開発秘話を中心に、プロトタイピングについて話を聞かせてくれた。

tagtype（タグタイプ）はもともと、機械情報工学を専攻していた大学時代の卒業論文として始まったプロジェクト。tagtypeには10個のボタンがあり、最初「行」を、2回目の入力で段を入れるという２つの入力方法で、簡単に５０音が入力できるというもの。小児マヒの後遺症でキーボードでの入力が難しという小説家のえとう乱星氏から「障害者用の文字入力機器を作って欲しい」と依頼された田川さんは、えとう氏の自宅で一緒に生活をしてアイデアを固めていったという。どのような入力方法がいいのかと試行錯誤を重ねていたところ、えとう氏がプレイステーションで遊んでいるという「ショッキングな」場面を発見。ゲーム機とキーボードの設計の違いを分析していくことから、tagtypeが生まれたそうだ。詳しくは、Podcastで！

メディアからも、好意的に取り上げられたtagtypeだったが、実際に製品として売り出すところまでは到達できず、挫折を味わったという田川さん。良い物を作っても必ずしもそれが結果として結びつかないという事実に気づいてから、今度は「マーケティング」を念頭に置くように。そこでtagtypeの2号機として開発されたのがtagtype Garage Kitだ。

tagtype Garage Kit(タグタイプガレージキット)は、組み立て／改造ができる工作キットで、「電子工作キット」と「組み立てキット」の2種類がある。1号機と違い、今回は明確なターゲットを設定した。自分で部品を購入して組み立てる事が好きな「おたくっぽい人」がそうだ。自分で組み立ててもらう事でコストの削減もできる上に、工作好きの人ならば、分からない事は自分で調べて、ネットなどを通し新しいユーザーの指導をしてくれる事も期待できると言う事で、カスタマーセンターの設置が不必要になるという事もプラスの要素だという。(tagtype Garage Kitのデモの映像はコチラで）

Afterglowの仕組み

次のプロジェクトはレーザードローイングツールAfterglow。パワーポイントなどを使ってのプレゼンテーションの際に、レーザーポインターを光のペンのようにして直接スクリーンに文字を書き込んだり、マウスの代わりとしてプレゼンソフトの操作が出来るという画期的なソフトウェアだ。実はこのソフトウェア開発のきっかけとなったのは、数年前に招待されたあるカンファレンスでの出来事だったという。大きなスクリーンの横にちょこんと座って発表するプレゼンターの姿を見て、「なんて非インタラクティブなプレゼンなんだろう」と感じたという。自分がなぜこのような印象を受けたのかという事を後になって分析し、コンピュータを使ってのプレゼンと、学生時代に経験した黒板とチョークを使っての授業を比較して、Afterglowのアイデアが生まれたという事だ。

このAfterglowにはいろんなペン先が実装されており、マーカー風の文字をかいたり、毛筆風にしたり、書いた物を消しゴムで消してみたりという事もできる。また、RGBのインク壷が用意されており、色も好きなようにアレンジできる。

最後に、「プロトタイプで大事な事は何ですか？」という質問に、自分の中で「こうだろう」とアイデアを固めてしまう前に、まずは形にしてフィードバックを得て、そこに改良を加える—この事のループ状に繰り返し行っていく事。また、自分が、このプロトタイプを作る上で確認したい事はなんなのか、という目的を明確にする事だと話してくれた田川さん。彼の今後の活躍から目が離せない！
