シイラ：高機能ブラウザ for Mac

あなたがMacのユーザーなら、多分SafariかFirefoxを使ってこの記事を読んでいると思う。でも、そんなあなたに新しい選択肢を紹介したい。オープンソースのシイラ(Shiira)ブラウザだ。しかも、ここ東京発！現在のところ、バージョン1.2.1までしか公開されていないが、近い将来このシイラプロジェクトは、前述のマックブラウザ二大勢力への力強いライバルになるに違いない。PingMagは今回、シイラプロジェクトのリーダーである木下誠さんに、シイラについて、インターフェースのデザインについてお話を伺った。

インタビュー：ジョン＆キョウコ

今日は、PingMagの為にお時間をとっていただいてありがとうございます、木下さん！では最初の質問です、どんな人にシイラを使って欲しいですか？

多くのMac OSX ユーザーです。

ええ、でも、MacにはもともとウェブブラウザとしてSafariがついてきますよね？Safariとシイラの違いを聞かせてもらえますか？

まずSafariは、OSの標準で添付されているものだから、ベーシックな機能を提供するものである、と。それに対してシイラは、Safariがもっている機能をすべてカバーして、かつもっと高機能を実現するもの。だから、Safariを使ってブラウザの操作を覚えて、それに飽き足らない人たちに使って欲しいです。

Safariで気に入らない点はありますか？

（笑）えーっと、嫌いってことはないけれど、ものたりないって感じかな。例えばFirefoxってあるじゃないですか？Firefoxはいいところも悪いところもあるんだけれども、いろんな機能がありますよね、例えばタブの機能があったり、いろいろ拡張できたり、RSSの機能が特徴的だったり。Safariにはない機能がいろいろとあります。他には、Windowsの世界だと、Sleipnir（スレイプニル）っていう高機能ブラウザもあります。だけど、そういった高機能ブラウザに比べると、Safariの機能は弱いかなという気がします。

シイラが目指しているものが3つありまして。それはMac OS Xらしい、Mac OS Xユーザーのための、高機能ブラウザです。

一つ目の「Mac OS Xらしい」というのは、Macの特徴というのは、僕らにはおなじみの　ユーザーインターフェースだと思うんですよ、あと統一感。シイラが一番大事にしているのは、ユーザインターフェースなんです。だから、Macらしく使いやすくて、ほかのiアプリケーション…iPhotoとかiTunesとかと、統一性のとれたデザインインターフェイスを提供する事。

二つ目の、「Macユーザーのため」の、というのは、Mac OS Xがもっている機能というのを活用したい。例えば今、OS Xは10.4.ーTigerと言われているバージョンがあるじゃないですか。10.4が出た時に、アップルはDashboardが搭載されたとか、Spotlightが搭載されたとか、いろいろ新機能を紹介しました。シイラはそういったMac OS X独自の新機能をどんどん取り入れて行きたい。例えば現在の場合だと、Tigerから導入されたCore Imageっていうグラフィック機能があるんですけれども、それをつかって、ページトランジションエフェクト（ぺージ遷移エフェクト）を付けています。そういった感じでMac OS Xの機能を積極的に取り入れて行く、と。

最後に三つ目の、「高機能ブラウザ」というのは、Safariはどっちかというと、ベーシックな機能を提供するという事を主眼に置かれていますけれども、シイラはFIrefoxとか、さっき述べたSleipnir、あとOperaみたいな感じで、ウェブブラウザとそれに付随する機能をどんどん取り入れていきたい。以上３つがシイラが目指しているものです。

なるほど。ところで、シイラという名前の由来は？

あぁ、シイラは魚の名前です。シイラを始めた時に、海の近くに住んでたんですよ。今HMDT(Happy Machintosh Developing Time!)という名前で、いろいろソフトを作っていますけど、海から名前をとったソフトが多いです。例えばCoral（珊瑚）とかJolla（ホヤ）とか。Jollaは近くにLa Jollaってビーチがあったので、そこからとりました。

そうだったんですか、やっとすっきりしました。シイラの今後はどうなっていきますか？

短期的には、現在のバーションが、1.2.1で、まず1.3、1.4とバージョンアップして行きます。これは、デバッグをしながら、ユーザーから要望のあった機能をつけて行くという感じですね。それと同時に今、2.0というのを開発中です。シイラのプロジェクトが始まったのが2004年で、もうすぐ２年になるんですけれども、機能をいろいろ追加しすぎてユーザーインターフェースが煩雑になってきたんです。という事で一回ユーザーインターフェースを一から作り直そうと、プロジェクトでいろいろ練っています。という訳で、使いやすさの面で、かなり大きく改善された2.0を開発中です。

シイラだけではなく、一般的にユーザーインターフェイスで大事だと思う事はなんですか？

まずユーザーインターフェイスに関して大事だと思うのは、一番がユーザーに余計なストレスを与えないという事です。それには２つあって、まずユーザーが行いたい動作をすぐに出来る事と、ユーザーが新しい動作を覚える必要がなくて、見てすぐ分かる事です。最初に考えるのはこの２つですね。

行いたい動作がすぐ出来るという事は、ユーザインタフェースの使われる頻度によって、一番適切な配置を検討する。例えば今のMacのユーザーインターフェースって、動作をするのに、メニューから選択したり、ツールバーのボタンを押したり、またはダイアログに表示させて、そこから選んだりするじゃないですか。その手間は、ショートカットキーをそこに当てるとすぐに出来たり、またはツールバーボタンが比較的早かったり、ダイアログをだしてその中から選ぶっていうのは結構時間がかかったり、…という風に違いがあるんですよね。なので、ユーザーが90％の時間使うものは、出来るだけ手早い手順で選択できるようにする。逆に、ほどんど使わない機能…一日の作業のうち、10回しか使わないようなものは、むしろ前面からはずしたり。

もう一つの見て分かるというのは、今シイラプロジェクトのユーザーインターフェースをデザインしてくれている人（Kei Sasaki）がいて、彼がいろいろ提案してくれているんですけど、彼が言うには、認知心理学をベースにユーザーインターフェースをデザインし直すべきだ、と。

認知心理学で言うと、僕はあんまり詳しくないんですけど、一番簡単な例で言うと、例えばボタンのインターフェースとかダイアルのインターフェースがありますよね。ダイアルのインターフェースは、これをみると、「これをつかんで左／右にまわす」っていうのが、なんとなくわかるじゃないですか？これはもともとユーザーが日常生活の中で、こういうボタンというノブがあって、その使い方と機能を理解しているからです。その比喩を画面にも持ち込む事によって、新しく使う人もよく使っている人も、それと意識せずに、やりたいことに没頭できる。こういう自然なユーザーインターフェースを取り入れる事を気をつけています。見て、「これはなんだろう？」と思わせない事ですね。

シイラはオープンソースのプロジェクトですよね。他のオープンソースのプロジェクトで、注目しているものがあったら教えて下さい。

まず、もちろんMac OS Xの開発者だから、BSD(Berkeley System Distribution)にはいつも注目しています。Mac OS Xのベースになっているのは、Darwinって呼ばれていまして、DarwinはBSDをベースにしているんですね。だから、Mac OS Xのすべての基盤ということで、このBSDには注目をしています。もちろんLinuxにも注目しています。

ちょっと話が変わりますが、Macが、iTunesなどの音楽販売で独占企業になりつつある、という指摘もありますが、それについてどう思いますか？

独占企業ですか？（笑）そうですねぇ、私は比較的古くからのユーザーなんですよ。一番最初につかったのは94年くらいだから、まぁ10年くらいかな。Macって、”Mac”としてみたら、もう100%独占企業なわけですよ。だって、Mac OSをつかって、マッキントッシュ作ってるのアップルしかいないから。だけど、パソコン全体としてみると、ほんのごくわずかなシェアなんですよね。ただが、3%か4%ぐらいしかいないわけですし。

最近でこそiTunesとか出てきてますけど、Macは少し前までは、今からは考えられないほど弱い時代があったんです。iTunesに関して言えば、まず法的な考え方からいくと、たしかにiTunesのシェアはかなり大きくなっています。一番問題にされているのは、iPodに対して、他のミュージックサービスが入って来れないという問題ですよね。iPodデバイス、またはiTunes Music Storeが不可分なものとなっていて、例えばiTunes Music Store用の他のデバイスを作ってアップルに売り込むとか、またはiPod用の他のソフトを作って売り出すとか、そういう事ができなくなっている。それをもって独占的って言われているんだと思います。

だけど、それは捉え方であって…、例えば別に「ネットワーク音楽販売システム」という事で考えれば、その分野に他のものが参入してくるのをアップルが阻害しているわけではないんです。あまり法律的な事は分からないんですけどね。例えばソニーのWalkmanは音楽販売サイトMoraとのセットでやろうとしていたり、最近はKDDIプラスLismoプラス携帯っていうセットできたり。そういう競争は起こってるから、まあ独占企業ではないだろうと思います。

iPod

開発者からみると、iPodっていうデバイスは非常によく出来たデバイスなので、iPodにいれて動かすためのソフトが作れたら面白いとは思うんですよ。でもアップルが絶対公開しないでしょうから無理すね。あと、iTunesはDRM(Digital Rights Managemant -デジタル著作権管理)ソフトウェアのFairPlayっていうのを使っているんですけれども、FairPlayもアップルだけが使えて、サードバーティに公開していないんですよね。それを使わせてくれたら嬉しいのにな、と思います。

HMDTでは、デスクトップアプリケーションを作っていらっしゃいますが、ウェブのソフトでよく使っているものはありますか？

最近mixiは使ってますけど…そのくらいです。

今後、ウェブアプリケーションを開発するご予定などありますか？

ウェブアプリケーションそのものを開発するプランはないですけど、ウェブアプリケーションを利用するデスクトップアプリケーションは作りたいです。例えばiCartっていうソフトを開発したんですが、これはAmazonを検索するためのソフトなんです。iCartだと、デスクトップアプリケーションを使って、Amazonから検索したり買い物をしたり出来るんです。私はデスクトップアプリケーションの開発者だから、まずデスクトップでいろいろな事をやりたいっていうのがあります。

でも、…なぜですか？

なんでかって言うと…ジョンさんの前で言うのはあれなんですけど（笑）、HTMLでのデザインっていうのは、見る分にはいいんですけれども、操作する分にはかなり使いづらいところがあると思うんです。私はもっと融通のきく効率的なデスクトップアプリケーションを作りたい。たとえば、iCartを例にとると、商品をカテゴリ別にリストにして表示したり、値段順にソートしたりできます。あと、常に、カートの中に自分が入れた商品が表示されているのでわかりやすいですし。自分が欲しくない情報や、広告に惑わされる事もないわけです。だから、サービスとしてはウェブアプリケーションを使う。だけど、ユーザーはデスクトップアプリケーションを使う。そういう方向性を探っています。この方向性はシイラ2.0で大きくフィーチャーされる予定です。

へー、早く使ってみたいですね。デスクトップアプリケーションの開発の他に、今やっている事はありますか？

開発以外では、本を書いたり、雑誌やウェブに記事を書いたりしています。全部プログラミングのためのものなんですけど。これは、去年の5月くらいに出したDashboardのプログラミング本で、その名も「Programming Dashboard」です。そう、これはジョンさんにプレゼントします。春くらいに、また新しい本が出版されますが、それは、Mac OS X 10.4の新機能を使ったプログラミングに関する本ですね。
