PingMagのPodcast第一弾は、アーティストであり建築家のウスマン・ハック(Usman Haqueが、PingMagで行なったセミナーの模様のビデオポッドキャストです。ポッドキャストのメインとなるのは、もちろん映像なんだけど、今からも毎回このように、ちょっとしたセミナーの内容説明をつけたいと思います映像がみたい方は、ぜひ登録して下さいね。

さて、PingMagセミナーについてですが、ウスマンは、彼が「建築のソフトウェア」と呼んでいる考え方について話してくれました。空間を作り上げる上で手で触れる事ができない、もっと「人間っぽい」部分・・例えば、匂い、音、電磁波など。すべてが、人間の体験に大きな影響を与えていると彼は言います。

最初に見せてくれたプロジェクトは、「scents of space（空間の香り）」といって、私達が日常どのように「香り」に影響されているのか、という実験でした。香りというのは、一箇所にとどめておくのがすごく難しいものです。というのも、すぐに広がって、空気中に分散してしまうからです。このプロジェクトでは、いくつもの送風機を使って、違う香りを部屋中送り込みこみました。そんな訳で、立ち位置によって、違う香りを体験出来ました。

「Sky Ear」という作品では、携帯電話によって作り出されている電磁波という目に見えないものを視覚的に表現してみせました。電磁波センサーとLEDを1000個ものヘリウム風船に取り付け空に浮かべる事により、上空の目に見えない電気のノイズが音と光りに変換され、美しい光景が繰り広げられました。

また、ウスマンは、「オープンソース」の建築についても少し話を聞かせてくれました。オープンソースというのは、ソフトウェアを設計する上でよく使われて来たコンセプト—つまり、ソースコードをネットで公開、みんなでシェアする事によって、ソフトウェアの改良をする事ができるというものでしたが、ウスマンはこのコンセプトを建築に応用させようと考えており、薄い「膨らませることができる」プラスチックの部屋をみんなが切り取ったり、付け足したりして改良できるという作品も紹介してくれました。

最後に彼が見せてくれたのは、「嫌な予感」や「霊がいるような雰囲気」を使って、人間の心理状態を調査するというとても興味深いプロジェクトでした。このプロジェクトでウスマンは、「心霊スポット」を意図的に作り上げようとしました。彼はリサーチにより、心霊現象などが報告される場合、その場所からは、ある共通の大気の状況がある事を発見しました。特に、超低周波と電磁波の存在が顕著だったそうです。ウスマンは、これらの特性を、中立な空間（つまり、心霊スポットなどと呼ばれていない場所）にわざと作り上げ、被験者に体験してもらいました。ただの、何にもない部屋にも関わらず、結果として多くの人が、不安感や恐怖心の高まりを体験したとの事です。
