Just as we recovered from the many catwalks at Japan Fashion Week the next exhibition was already fair in sight: rooms No.17 is a tradeshow that tries to combine fresh fashion ideas with all kinds of related products, art exhibitions and installations. Why not? Especially when it’s held at Yoyogi National Gymnasium in Tokyo, a highlight of metabolist architecture. PingMag had a stroll around the booths for some inspiration.

When walking around this huge samurai hat-shaped gymnasium by Kenzo Tange, you pass by all sorts of nice gadgets lined up on the terraces where usually the spectators stand. What caught our eyes first:

Surely, we can never get enough of tenugui, especially the lovely patterned Japanese towels! So much fun that Tokyo-based Hirocoledge developed nice and funky pop patterns on tenugui used as practical shopping bags. But psst! We will tell you a lot more about them very soonish…

Next comes something equally convenient for your personal household delight:

To help you get motivated to do the dishes: The Dish Mop by the Dutch droog are funny little balls in blue and yellow.

Yes, these are sponge balls (above) in bright yellow and blue and they are simply tucked into something metal that looks like tongs for your BBQ. And what to do with them again? Your dishes will be thrilled to be cleaned by this exquisite “Dish Mop” gadget by Dutch droog designers.

… and their totes with motifs subtly pointing to the issue.

Oh, and then, right at the entrance of the rooms fair , there was the Nextide booth. What did they bring us this time: With the concept of “barrier-free in the mind,” this Tokyo-based company commissions various artists from all over, such as Singapore’s Phunk Studio (we introduced to you earlier), to design apparel for everybody — and don’t leave out the physically impaired. Take, for example, this stylish, plain white sneaker whose zipper has a very practical reason. Thoughtful, indeed. A percentage of the sales is donated to Able Art, the company with the sweet T-shirt collections by artists with disabilities.

Then, right in the middle of the huge gymnasium and surrounded by all the stands, there was a pretty large space turned into an installation. French artist Ante Vojnovic set up a whole bamboo forest in white above a red flooring. Visitors could get themselves orange helmets to wear and wander around the hanging bamboo trees. Care for a bit of distraction from the hectic fair biz?

Eye candy: an elegant pattern resembling a crossbreeding of snakeskin with plaid by Farahbella.

After that, we found some real gems: Haoming, also from Tokyo, does shiny little wrestling masks as coin cases on your keychain, purses or hip bags. For every Lucha Libre fan a definitive must! He also just did a collabo with Hello Kitty, creating a masked Kitty cat as coin case. Well… Hello Kitty devotees will certainly have their fun with that.

When walking around, we bumped into John DiCesare of Parashell, who was proud to present us his latest cutie: the Sakura parasol with a delicate cherry blossom outline (below on the left.) Most elegant! Check out the shopPingMag for more of his frilly umbrellas!

Just seen at Fashion Week: the new HISUI collection inspired by lots of archaic bones.

Pleats that imitate the shapes of bones? Tokyo-based fashion designer HISUI are creating interesting apparel entities (above on the right) we could already explore at their inspiring catwalk show at Japan Fashion Week the week before.

Posh! The crystal bunny by Sabrina Dehoff for CRYSTALLIZED™ - Swarovski Elements.

Glitzy things are always catching our attention. Same here: Crystals are popular on everything and your mobile phone, as we just showed you — and don’t forget the bombastic transforming chandeliers you can insert them with. At rooms, it was the Crystal Loves Leather exhibition by CRYSTALLIZED™ - Swarovski Elements that was sending reflecting beams through parts of the hall. We’re not sure what to do with a crystal saddle though, but the handbags did look awesome! Alternatively, a bunny mask would aglitter every hostess in one of Tokyo’s bunny bars…


Free hugs from the plushy one!

On the way out, we had to stop for a huge life-sized plush creature that was only waiting to give us a free hug — just like the free hug groups outside the gymnasium next to Harajuku Station on the weekend!
