TOKYO WONDER SITE: Artists In Residence, Welcome to Tokyo!

French multimedia artist Antonin Fourneau came as artist in residence to Tokyo Wonder Site Aoyama. Obviously he got inspired by Japanese arcade games - "Aluminum Arcade Button."

People flock to Tokyo to get their inspiration by all kinds of things: be it young cosplayers, cute cardboard boxes, glittery dekotora, huge Mount Fuji paintings in public bath houses… Artists thrive of this city’s energy - and want to stay! That is why PingMag picks up the Artist-in-Residence programs by Tokyo Wonder Site offering residential and work spaces. Read closely if you’re an aspiring artist that ever wanted to live in Tokyo for a while!

In in 2001, Tokyo Wonder Site opened in collaboration with the Tokyo government-hosted Tokyo Wonder Wall exhibition site as platform for artists. In November 2006, they implemented the “Creator-in-Residence (CIR)” program. Since then, Tokyo Wonder Site Aoyama is a more international forum in which national and international artists can stay. By February 2008, this program has welcomed 163 artists, curators and researchers from 27 countries!

Residence programs are not that simple as they have a great variety of types. For example, TWS Aoyama offers a By–invitation program having artists recommended by public institutions, an Exchange between Japan and overseas program to exchange young creators selected through specified public issues in each country, the Collaborative studio program inviting foremost artists as instructors to work on projects with young creators, the Research Residency Program to have artists and curators chosen from public issues, and the Emerging Musician Support Program having world leading performing musicians as instructors to teach emerging musicians in Japan.

Above all, the Research Residency Program is eligible for any artist or curator who is planning to create or research artworks related to Tokyo and can speak Japanese or English for daily conversation. Launched just two years ago, this program had around fifty applicants last year and roughly six out of them have been selected.

Invited artists can stay in TWS Aoyama’s rooms located in one of Tokyo’s hottest areas for maximum three months. Apart from bedrooms with baths, toilets, kitchens, a minimum of furniture, appliances and tableware, the facilities also have a shared living room, a dining room, a multipurpose space, a library and a laundry room. And, of course, Internet access is also available in bedrooms.


Sixteen bedrooms are in the premises. This is for single-use.

A living room with a grand piano for relaxed get togethers.

This library is perfect for talk shows and other events!

Though artists can surely devote as much of their time as possible for their creations, a big benefit of TWS’s “Residency Program” is meeting with new folks. It happened that artists got along so well during their stay that they released collaborative works. The events planned by TWS encourage the communication among participants and staff even more.

Attention: Shortly, this year’s “Research Residency Program” will take applications, so check out the official web site. They are planning to accept approximately ten people!
