Here we go with Design Week special #4! Today we’d like to focus on the “Tide Think” project, which gives us the essence of this year’s DesignTide message – “PLAY = COMMUNICATION,” meaning it’s not design if it’s not fun! Twenty-four creators from Japan and abroad have brought their interactive, product and visual works to “Tide Think.” PingMag will be your guide. Enjoy!!

Interactive Works
“Pong Table” by engineer and artist Moritz Waldmeyer looks like an ordinary marble-sheathed table at first glance. However, the surface is lined with numerous LEDs and you can enjoy table tennis of light without balls or rackets. How about a quick game for your after-meal exercise?
From Spain comes Roger Ibars: His “Hard-wired Devices” consist of electronic equipment that combines 70s to 90s computer game joysticks and different kinds of stylish retro alarm clocks or even a mobile. Setting your alarm by clicking with a joystick? What a clever idea! This would be a slightly different experience in the morning…

“Pong Table” by Moritz Waldmeyer.

Roger Ibars’ “Hard-wired Devices”: Simply irresistible for geeks!
Below: When fluttering down from the top of the tree-shaped installation, these leaf-shaped pieces of paper, each with on open eye on one side and a closed eye on the other, give the illusion of winking eyes. Cute! “Blinking Tree” by Yasuhiro Suzuki is a simple, yet never boring interactive work that entertains everybody.

When you print out sheets with unrecognisable patterns and insert them into a magic box, the “Pixel Factory” projects pixel animations on its front screen. RCA student, Kennichi Okada, gives us a magical experiences using patterns that are rearranged by optic fibre.

Eco-Product Category
Colourful lampshades made from recycled plastic bottles were the works of Heath Nash from South Africa. After being introduced here on PingMag before, this is his first visit to Japan, where he is continuing to work on his creations on site.

Next comes Hannah Lobley who recycles pages from old books and magazines into a wood-like material to produce lots of different products. She discovered this technique after accidentally leaving a book out in the rain.

Visual Communication Category
Abake, a London based group of four designers, presents their awesome signature work “Limb Typography.” They communicate with letters made by using their own limbs - often involving visitors. Expect to take part in this too!

“Limb Typography” by Abake.

Especially for us, Abake kindly made the character “Pi” in Katakana, standing for “PingMag!”
PingMag’s great favourite, the experimental typography unit, Dainippon Type Organization brought an upgraded version of their collaboration with Kokuyo we saw at last year’s DesignTide! What would you make with the magnets for “PLAY?”

The magnets for the word “PLAY” turns into…

…a caterpillar!
Product Category
You care about your potted plants, but you also want to save water… So, how can you efficiently use rain water for them? This clever product by Fulguro of Switzerland uses a leaf-shaped saucer to gather as much rain water as possible.

Gather more rain water with this leaf-shaped saucers! You potted plants will love you.

And the poster is cute too!
Piet Hein Eek creates products using waste from factories. When a client wanted to give a go cart to his grandchildren, Piet took a long time and effort to make this into an actual product.

Byggstudio joined the “Tide Think” event at the last minute: Their “Vintage Plant” project rejuvenates neglected and forgotten plants at the corner of your room by changing its pots and the shape of foliage.

Interior Category
The “Tide Think” exhibition space was designed by Megumi Matsubara and Hiroi Ariyama of assistant: A giant ball of yarn at the entrance represents the fact that the space is made by symbolically knitting.

Visual Category
The visual category has collected short films on the theme of “PLAY = COMMUNICATION” - watch these interesting works either at the site or online at the official website.
With this category, we start with Alexander Gelman, one quite familiar face for Ping! The word “PLAY” projected in Gelman’s unique font changes into….
Next comes Swiss Colin Schaelli who created a lovely work with stop motion animation and a pop background music.

Visual work by Alexander Gelman.

Another clip on the PLAY theme, by Colin Schaelli.
At New Year, Shantell Martin brought us so much joy with her super cute wild boar illustration for our New Year series. And in her visual work, her illustrations are energetically alive and kicking as well!
Spinning the sphere-shaped PLAY equipment in a park as fast as possible is the manga author and artist KATSUKI TANAKA. Find out the ending for yourselves!

Animated illustration by Shantell Martin.

Clip by Katsuki Tanaka.
Representing Tokyo’s graphic scene comes Kenjiro Harigai of ADAPTER. In his work “WORLD SYSTEM,” he wanted to depict the way swallowed fluid changes…
bleed.designstudio is probably the most famous design team in Norway! For this event, they used letters to visualise what “Play” actually means.

Clip by Kenjiro Harigai.

bleed.designstudio’s visual.
L.A.-based Tom Tor of “My Eskimo Friend” participated with his pop motion graphics with a unique West Coast atmosphere.
WOW Inc., a Japanese visual image studio based in Tokyo and Sendai, has produced a wide variety of commercial spots. Here, they demonstrate their dynamic motion graphics to the “Tide Think” visitors.

Visual work by Tom Tor.

WOW Inc.’s clip.
Shingo Ohno of Merce Death came up with the image of a single guitarist playing in ensemble with himself. His idea of postponing the image by a bar at a time is quite simple - yet it’s fascinating!
Maris Mezulis is the photographer who shot so many beautiful pictures for our last year’s article on Olivier Gondry. Remember?

A visual work by Shingo Ohno.

Maris Mezulis’ visual.
Bob Foundation is the creative duo of Mitsunori Asakura and Hiromi Suzuki, both St. Martin’s College’s graduates. Their work has a somewhat non-Japanese atmosphere. What do you think?
Tochka presents “Pika Pika,” an art project that involves drawing pictures in the air with torches. Just watching the images will make you want to join in with the light graffiti!

A visual work by Bob Foundation.

Some of Tochka’s dazzling works.
Now, that was lots of fun - and playfulness! The “Tide Think” exhibition at DesignTide runs through Sunday, so definitely do drop by with your friends! If you’re not in Japan, you still have hope: Several clips are shown online at the DesignTide site!**

I think everyone should read the imomus article about this kind of ‘fun’ design.

Design divorced from production, divorced from meaning.

The whole exhibit is far more about art-making, not design. The good: Shantell Martin relies on her hand skills. I wouldn’t necessarily call it “design”, but she’s a damn fine illustrator (and Lord knows that illustrators have it worse than designers on today’s work-for-hire playing field). DTO’s typefield was ok. Not the most inspired piece from them, but fine enough. W0W’s motion piece was nice. The bad: Abake’s work tends to be about being a well-connected, socializing group of over-educated Britons with nary a typographic skill. The nonexistant arm typography smacks of the same. I wish these damn Londoners would design something instead of relying on default typography and giddy “concepts” that aren’t strong enough to sustain a wet fart, much less being a lecturer at a postgraduate institution. Gelman’s easy outs are about being uptight, oversimplified, and incommunicative. Please explain to me why I should care about this guy’s work. I do not understand.
The ugly: Tom Tor’s appropriation of other LA motion graphics agencies’ recent work is kind of stunningly lame.
Ugliest: The premise of Momus’ argument is correct. I daresay that these harbingers of the Dunne and Raby school of “critical design” may have interesting ideas, but they offer little of practical value to those outside of the initiated few. Next year, less talk, more rock!!
Ping!

“You care about your potted plants, but you also want to save water… So, how can you efficiently use rain water for them? This clever product by Fulguro of Switzerland uses a leaf-shaped saucer to gather as much rain water as possible.”
Clever? Efficient? Is it?
In days of yore in Russia, in the countryside, rain-water that streams down the roof of a building into the gutter is gathered in the barrel that is placed under the end of the gutter. This water is then used to water plants and, if the weather is warm, to wash oneself at the end of the day.
