From line drawing to fashion line

A happy Shantell Martin with one of her designs - last week at the Gadget Salon fashion exhibition at Roppongi Hills.

What happens if a yet unknown but exquisite fashion design duo desperately seeks an artist to collaborate with and PingMag happens to know one? Our new man Ryo made the connection…

Written by Uleshka

Tani Ryouna and Maya Ishii (both worked with Comme des Garçons for years) recently started their fashion label ENCADREURS in Tokyo with the idea to collaborate with a different artist every season. PingMag “best mate” Shantell Martin has been featured around New Year, where we introduced some of her light and twisted line drawings. (Unfortunately there are not that many creative women around (in comparison), of which even fewer are talented, and of these even fewer are international women being out and about here in Tokyo - yet - Shantell is one of them). Ryo thought that those two parties could complement each other perfectly - and he was right! Here is how their collaboration came about.

Shantell sent some scans of her drawings to ENCADREURS.

They chose the ones they liked and turned Shantell’s drawings into embroidery.

View of the complete t-shirt with a ‘27 badge’ near the collar - the theme of this collection is also ‘The 20s’.

Visiting the Gadget Salon 2007 Autumn/Winter fashion exhibition at Roppongi Hills last Thursday, I saw lots of happy faces. First the ones of ENCADREURS who got such good responses from everyone regarding their collection. And then of course of Shantell herself, who probably never thought that her ‘Wild Boars’ she drew for PingMag as a New Year card would ever end up as a fashion line…

original drawing from Shan

Part of the ‘Wild Boar drawing series’ for PingMag’s new year card turned into a beautiful badge.

Shantell is obsessed with the number 27 (don’t ask me why, please!) and made this her little trademark. Here is another embroidery badge with the ENCADREURS logo tag in the background

Embroidery seems to be one nice way to handle Shantell’s drawings. However, using bits of them as a pattern for a jacket lining for example worked just as well.

Rough woolen jacket with orange silk lining…

…that also works turned inside out!

detail of the lining with Shantell’s pattern

What came as a nice surprise for us is that - because ENCADREURS seemed to favor Shantell’s ‘Wild Boar’ drawings of all the ones she sent in (maybe because this year is the Chinese Zodiac of ‘Wild Boar’ and it is therefor their ‘Boar Collection 2007′ or something like that) - these drawings created a PingMag coat almost “naturally”…

Another lovely coat turned inside out to see the beautiful lining. This time they used a full drawing.

Detail of the drawing that shows the ‘Shantell 27′ signature.

Ping goes fashion! View the original drawing here

There were many small surprises… the last precious one I will introduce comes with a beautiful pattern lining, again.

My favorite outfit!

Shantell’s drawings on a stripey silk shirt, dress and pants

And the excellent made-me-crack-up bunny-collar with button eyes and plastic claws! I only wish it wasn’t real fur….

This was just to tickle your taste buds! Once this collection is actually available in the stores, we will let you know!!! There will be a first small selling exhibition at 3144 Omotesando Gallery from March 13-16 in Tokyo - just in case you are around! (…and would you believe it! Both Shantell and ENCADREURS don’t have sorted out their website yet, but Shantell is blogging here and is planning to publish her personal blog by the end of this month! We will keep you updated!!!)
