When I met Shantell Martin for the first time in Tokyo at the PingMag Party and asked what she was doing to make a living, she answered: “I add a little bit of ‘London’ to Tokyo!” Also called Shanteru in Japan, she is known for her unbeatable coolness factor. Being her friend is like belonging to a secret club of smiling nodders agreeing that this woman is wicked! Today we say thanks to her for completing our PingMag Illustration Series with her tiny twisted drawings created just for us. Enjoy!

Shantell, I see you on flyers a lot recently doing live-drawings and stuff. You used to do lots of street art back in London. When did you actually start drawing and why?

When did it begin? I’ve been doodling since forever and I guess that’s what I’m still doing today. I started drawing in the format that I use now in Japan, 2005 sometime around December.

What is drawing for you?

Drawing for me is a line that flows between the past and the future without touching the sides.

Where and how do you draw?

I draw everywhere and anywhere I can. On trains, at bus stops, on walls, waiting for friends outside coffee shops. I draw in books, on books, on clothes. I love lines. When I draw I start with one regular line, then I simply follow it until its finished.

On the stairs of Koenji train station. In case you like Shan’s sweater - that is by Beyond the Valley, a superb London label specializing in delicious prints. Shantell has created a couple of very nice motifs for them!

Any particular tools?

Yep! 005 Pilot drawing pen, 9 x 14 Japanese style Moleskine sketch book, post it notes (all shapes ‘n sizes) and a little resealable plastic bags to wrap them individually. Nice and Tidy!

What are your motives about?

The number 27… and eventually finding a place that I feel comfortable in and happy to call home. Also my old Friends back home in London and my new friends out here in Tokyo.

What can we expect of you in the future?

You can expect to find me somewhere between London and Tokyo VJ-ing, drawing and working on my clothes label ‘Shantell Martin’.

What was last year like for you - what do you wish for the New Year?

Last year was a year of ‘firsts’ for me. I did one hundred and twenty seven things for the first time. For the New Year I wish and hope that I can start to answer some of those questions I find waiting for me in my drawings.

To be pro-active, to devote one hour a day to myself, to exercise, to commit to my goals.
