It’s a sweltering 30C in Tokyo today and the forecast for the weekend is even hotter - a sign of a great summer ahead! These hot summer gadgets are ideal for those of us who are planning to spend summer on the beach, jet-setting around the world, or having a BBQ with friends.

The Graphic Equaliser T-Shirt

First off, we have this rather retro-looking T-Shirt - stay cool whilst being cool…depending on your viewpoint. What’s so special about this garment? The design you see isn’t just printed - it’s a real graphic equaliser that responds to ambient sound. A great novelty item for summer music festivals!
The Cabana Islander

This is the closest you’re going to get to your own luxury yacht, unless you are a millionaire. The Cabana Islander is an inflatable, floating raft that can carry up to 6 people. It features a canopy and a handy drinks cooler - sounds perfect to bring to the beach and relax with friends.
Trunki

An inspired idea! Trunki is a cute, brightly-coloured suitcase for children, that doubles as a fun cart for them to ride on. International airports are getting bigger and bigger and simply going to your gate or from one terminal takes a lot of legwork - if you’re off on summer holidays this year, Trunki seems like a great way of ensuring your kids don’t get on that plane tired (and cranky). They are also impossible to lose sight of, thanks to the vibrant colouring.
Floating Pool Lamps

These wonderfully minimalist pool lamps are waterproof, rechargeable and float silently on the surface of a pool to add a whole new dimension to your night-time swimming experience. At $450 each, they aren’t exactly cheap, but then impoverished people like me tend not to have pools in the first place…
Mosquito Ultra Trap

The manufacturer claims that during independent testing, the Ultra Trap managed to catch an average of 3707 mosquitos in a night. It attracts mosquitos from up to 40 meters away, meaning in Tokyo you could put one of these things outside your apartment and potentially solve the mosquito problem for your whole building. Be a good samaritan!
Light-Up Uchiwa

Uchiwa - a type of Japanese hand fan - are an ubiquitous sight in the Japanese summer period. These light-up fans would make a great way for you and friends to find each other during dark, night-time summer festivals and matsuri.
Waterproof Wrist Camera

This contraption is being marketed as a way of taking action shots whilst you indulge in your favourite outdoor sports. It is secured to your wrist with a neoprene strap is waterproof up to 30 feet** and can be positioned in two different ways. I’m sure you could get some really interesting shots with this whilst surfing etc and never have to worry about dropping your camera and losing it forever.
The Manta Ray

Banana Boat? Paragliding? That’s so 2005. This year and onwards, the Manta Ray is THE hottest new leisure activity on the waves. The inflatable board has an aerodynamic shape similar to that of a manta ray and when towed by a speedboat, will lift into the air whilst the rider stands on it and holds on tight. At speed, the Manta Ray will float, suspended in the air at about 10 meters above the water. View a video below!
Space-Age BBQ

This unsual-looking object is a convenient, fold-up, gas-powered barbecue. Looks like it would be incredibly useful for those without gardens, and for impromptu, balcony use.
UV Calculator

We all want to enjoy the sun, but there are undoubtedly inherent risks with being exposed to scorching sunlight for too long. This little gadget is a must for those who intend to be on the beach all summer - it will detect the amount of UV rays you are being exposed to and give you a countdown based on your current sun lotion’s SPF rating for when it thinks you should get yourself into the shade. Stay safe!

gadgets are nice, but this page design is, well, bad. copy associated to the gadget is separated by two grey lines - the next gadget name appears in the same text block as the previous gadget.. a bit of massage to your styles, please.
