SHOTS in Tokyo at Superdeluxe

'There are many talented film makers in Japan!' says the chief editor of SHOTS, Lyndy Stout.

SHOTS was established 15 years ago as an intermediary between advertising agencies and film makers: they introduce edgy commercials, short films and music videos from around the world. Constantly providing fresh information and inspiration to over 40,000 professionals in commercial productions, SHOTS held a mid-summer lounge party at our favorite Roppongi Superdeluxe last Friday. Lyndy Stout, the chief editor of SHOTS flew in all the way to Japan to support the screening of their latest DVD ‘Adventures in Animation’.

Audience watching ‘Adventures in Animation’ DVD

SHOTS have 3 different media such as magazine, DVD and website. Over 1,000 short films, TV commercials and music videos from all round the world are brought to the subscribers every 2 months on all 3 media.

SHOTS magazine

Most of you might have never even seen this bimonthly magazine because this SHOTS magazine is not available at bookshops. In order to join the “knowing crowd” you need to subscribe for a year in advance: £655 for both DVD and magazine together. Well, that is not cheap indeed, but still many professionals in the film industry subscribe to get their valuable info such as interviews of film makers, reviews of latest work and feature articles focussing on a certain region.

There is also something called ‘SHOTS DIRECTORY’, an annual book of all the latest contact information of your favorite film makers and production companies from last 15 years! That sounds like a very handy address book to use!

SHOTS DVD

The SHOTS DVD showcases about 80 works including very rare videos, introducing film makers, masterpieces from old days, award winning films, full versions of music videos etc.

The ‘Adventures in Animation’ DVD shown last Friday at Super Deluxe is their latest special DVD + booklet which comes out every 6 months.

SHOTS online

SHOTS online a.k.a SHOTS.net introduces latest works and latest news for people in the film/advertising industry. If you are a registered member, you can watch over 5,000 art works made since 1990 and also search companies’ or directors’ full contact details online.

SHOTS online, SHOTS.net. The amount of their archive is…. huge.

SHOTS started to organize their special parties in Japan about 3 years ago, where professionals of film industry gather for a chat and to showcase latest work from round the world. This year, the editor Lyndy Stout joined another event and did a special talk show for people in advertising industry.

Now let’s take a look at some of the highlights from their latest DVD.

The first work is from American creative studio, Psyop for a MTV HD commercial. This black and white animation is very, very elegant, playful and extremly beautiful. These crows flying through white skies will make you think they are the most stunning birds you have ever seen (and forget how nasty they can be spreading all your garbage across the street….). Antoine Bardou-Jacquet who directed ‘When A City Comes To Life’ for Suez is a French director represented by Partizan, an international production company. He created this great commercial for a management company of electricity, water and gas… now doesn’t that sound boring? But you would be amazed! Watching his commercial, you will get the message that cities shine with electricity, gas and water.

Bombay Sapphire (who commissioned Psyop to do their last commercial) is a company known as to give a lot of freedom to film directors. Their latest commercial here is from Jake Banks from Stardust and is a striking commercial for Window XP: a great mixture of live image and animation.

DJ Uppercut ‘What You Standin For?’ directed by +Cruz / W+K Tokyo Lab

The latest music video of DJ Uppercut ‘What You Standin For?’ was directed by +cruz and W+K Tokyo Lab and features illustrations from Japanese artist Tadaomi Shibuya, who we already wrote about before on PingMag. Shibuya’s unique illustration style that re-consists objects with straight lines made this music video interesting and also very striking.

The Vines ‘Any Sound’ directed by Olivier Gondry

‘Code Hunters’ directed by Ben Hibon / Blinkinc

The Vines’s music video ‘Any Sound’ was directed by Olivier Gondry. The movement and funny expression of the band members of this clay animation will remind you of his brother… Michel.

Now here is another one I liked: MTV commissioned Swiss film director Ben Hibbon and Blinkinc to make this short animation ‘Code Hunters’. The great expression and good story line will move you, and you probably won’t be surprised to hear, that this piece took 8 months to be completed! You can watch ‘Code Hunters’ from Ben Hibon’s official website HERE.

‘True Color’ directed by Pierre Ducos & Bertrand Bey (Supinfocom)

‘Dynamo’ directed by Fabrice le Nezet, Mattieu Goutte, Benjamin Mousquet (Supinfocom)

‘Fin d’ete’ directed by Patrick Harboun, Ronan Le Fur, Joaquim Montserrat (Supinfocom)

‘Fallen Art’ directed by Tomek Baginski

All of ‘True Color’, ‘Dynamo’ and ‘Fin d’ete’ were directed by students and graduates from the same animation school Supinfocom, which is in a little town in north of France. This animation school is now becoming the center of attention in the animation industry. How good are they really? You can watch ‘Fin d’ete’ HERE and find out.

Finally, a short film called ‘Fallen Art’ directed by Polish film director Tomek Baginski showed a great feel of material. Poland has been producing film makers with a great skills in the last couple of years, and this piece that was also shown at Resfest and Short Shorts film festival definitely proved that.

Andy Thomas and Rumi Takahashi from Hybrid who represent SHOTS in Japan.

‘I am a big fan of you!’ says The chief editor Lyndy with award-winning director, Kosai Sekine.

Andy Thomas, the presenter at SHOTS from Hybrid said: ‘Many film directors actually get amazing chances from big clients or a open-minded clients through their private work, which reveals their full creative potential. When those clients then see that at SHOTS, that can be their ticket to the next big job.’ Listen up, film makers who like to moan ‘I want make something more creative!’. Just do it anyway and see where it takes you.

At the end of the event, I overheard some great news for our Japanese film directors from Lyndy Stout:

We are going to feature Japan in our January 2007 issue (will be out on 28th Nov 2006). We know there are so many talented film makers here in Japan: music videos, TV commercials, short films… everything! It doesn’t matter if it’s commercial work or private work. Please send a DVD of your work to us and let us introduce you to the rest of the world. The deadline is the beginning of October, we are looking forward to your work!

All right then Japanese film directors! Good luck!
