Wordpress is one of the most popular, free solutions for managing your website’s content and I am a devoted fanboy. However, whilst Wordpress in its default, out-of-the-box form can provide a good platform for your website, with a little tinkering you can increase the functionality of your site massively. And what’s the easiest way of tinkering? Plugins! Special files that you simply slot-in to your Wordpress installation to get new features. Here are 8 plugins that I consider absolutely invaluable…
Written by Jon

WP Shortstat
WP-Shortstat by Jeff Minard is a Wordpress-friendly implementation of Shaun Inman’s delightfully simple “Shortstat” website statistics software. If you are an OS X user, you can even download the WP-Shortstat Widget which allows you to keep an eye on your website statistics without leaving your desktop! If you like Shortstat, consider upgrading to Shaun Inman’s more fully-featured stats package, mint.

Get Custom
Often I am asked by newcomers to Wordpress, “how do I attach a thumbnail to a post?”. Wordpress doesn’t provide such functionality by default, but it does provide the means. In Wordpress you can attach an infinite amount of meta-data to posts using the “Custom Fields” area - for example, to tell Wordpress to use a certain thumbnail on a post. Get Custom by Scott Reilly allows you to easily retrieve any post’s meta data.

WP Cache Inspect
Wordpress 2 has a cache built into the system, which is great. What isn’t so great however, is that sometimes it caches things when you really don’t want it to - for example when you are redesigning parts of your site and no matter how many times you refresh the page, you can’t see the changes you made! WP Cache Inspect by Peter Westwood allows you to easily clear your cache whenever you feel like it.

Markdown
Markdown by John Gruber prevents you from having to write out clunky HTML to style your blog posts, and it is a massive time-saver. Using a simple, intuitive syntax using asterisks, brackets etc instead of continually opening and closing HTML tags, you can create links, bold text, italic text and more - effortlessly. Markdown was originally a Perl script but has been converted for use with Wordpress by Michel Fortin.

WP Pagenavi
The default installation of Wordpress handles large archives by adding a “back” and “forward” link to navigate through the pages. WP Pagenavi by Lester Chan allows you to add simple page number links whenever you have an archive that spans across several pages - much better for seeing where you are in the archive!

Akismet
Just Say No to blog comment spam. If you have a high-traffic blog, most likely you will receive hundreds of comment spam messages a day. Akismet means you never have to see any of them. Akismet comes complete with all new Wordpress installations, but it isn’t turned on by default - do the world a favour and turn it on (any blog spam Akismet catches gets recorded onto a central database - by letting Akismet catch spam, you help it become more efficient, which helps everyone).

WP Related Entries
WP Related Entries by Alexander Malov is a clever little plugin that displays a list of posts that are related to the post you are currently reading. It’s an entirely automatic process that tries to compare the content of posts across your archives, which means it can be a little temperamental. However, 95% of the time it adds a nice way of showing other articles your readers might be interested in, and encouraging people to dive into your archived posts.

WP Contact Form
WP Contact Form by Ryan Duff is utterly invaluable in that it provides you with an instant web-based contact form for your site. No need to display your email and attract spam, no need to waste time tediously coding a contact form yourself, more time to spend on the more interesting parts of your site!
I hope that was useful to some of you - if you have any suggestions of your own for “invaluable” Wordpress plugins, I’d love to hear them in the comments below!

Excellent, many thanks for this. I’ve been using WP for a few months now and have yet to dive into the world of plugins. This looks a great start.

Found WP Shortstat to be brocken with 2.0.2 WP. The solution can be found here - http://wordpress.org/support/topic/56700?replies=10 I can safely say that filosofo solution works magic.

I’m a big fan of the WP Related Entries plugin you mentioned, as it’s a great way to (let others) rediscover your archived posts (example - scroll down for the related entries list).
Also: for those who have their doubts about the effectiveness of the “nofollow” attribute value, the Dofollow plugin is a must-have!

Nice one. Thank you for collecting these…Off to download several of them now.

Thanks for mentioning my plugin (Related Entries). You should have also mentioned that I am horrible and keeping it up to date and supporting the users. I haven’t updated in some time due to pathological laziness and complete lack of time. Development may pick up again in the fall when I go on a two year vacation (aka MBA).

Akismet is great for catching spam, but it requires a Wordpress API, which is only available after you sign up for a wordpress.com blog. Which seems pointless, given that you’ve just downloaded your own blogging software, presumably for use on your own host.
p.s. small typo in your Akismet header :)

Some good ones on there, like the related articles addon, but some are unnecessary. Like the contact form one is very easy to do - wouldn’t it say it is ‘tedious’.

Regarding the get_custom plugin… You may have noticed that it hasn’t been updated in over a year. There’s a reason for that: Get custom metadata functionality has been built in for quite a while now.
Just use the post_custom() function. It takes a key and returns the value. If you have more than one entry associated with that key in the post, then it returns an array of all those values.
The get_custom plugin is no longer necessary, really. The stuff is already in there.

mmh, my essential Plugins are quite differnet to yours:
- “Now Reading” shows Amazon based future, current and past books and will keep all books in a library.
- “My link order” to order links and categies manually or alphabetically
- WP-Cron and WP Database Backup. IMHO very important! Automatically backs up the WP Database once a day and sends it in an email.

Thanks! This is such a useful list.

PS: some advanced tools are better provided from outside WP:
- Statcounter (web based), or PhPmyvisites (to be installed on the server) provide much better statistical information
- a very simple solution to encrypt your email address on WP (or on any other page): http://www.dynamicdrive.com/emailriddler/
You just need to exchange an encrypted code with your email address in the template.

I’m a little lazy sometimes, so a plug in i’ve been interested in would be a ‘re-run’ plug-in. Something that, when we get to the end of the day and I haven’t posted anything, WP automatically puts up a link to a past story. Anyone have any ideas on that?
Posted by: Ed G on June 28th, 2006 at 9:50 am
The intouch plugin is way better then wp-contact form. You don’t have to edit code, you get more textbox values, it sends out nicer and and it’s easy to add to your blog.

He there, does anyone know if there is a plugin or a hack that allows you to link a catogory to an image instead of to a whole post?
for instance you have a few posts with holliday pictures in your blog, the posts are linked to the catagorie ‘hollidays’ but in the posts you have several pictures of beaches and of mountains. What I would like to have is the option to catogories the images to the catogories ‘beaches’ and ‘mountains’. So when you choose for instance the beach catagory you only see te beach photo’s of the posts and not also the mountain pictures… any idea? Thanx!
